Top 5 most overrated bands/artists

This thread is great! I do have to say there are three things that I will not take anyone at their word on, and those are movies, music, and food/drink. Tastes are just so different. I have to try stuff for myself and decide on my own. I agree that it is really hard to say you don't like a certain band without ever seeing them live. For me:
Elvis
Meatloaf
Reba
Elvis
Elvis

The young Elvis truly helped change American Popular music. and then he turned into a fat, sweaty, drug-addled cartoon version of himself. Still, I remember where I was when the news broke that he had died. Not a huge Elvis fan, but "Suspicious Minds" is a great track IMHO. I had a professor in College who literally worshipped Elvis. Huge posters of the guy in her office.

(now his movies........that's another story. Outside of "Jailhouse Rock," most of the movies were a total cringe-fest.)

1. Can I say Prince? Prince. As a guitarist, musician, Minnesotan, and all-around cool weirdo, Prince is peerless. I just don't think his songs are all that great. I've never met anyone who is as big of a Prince fan as they claim to be.
2. Rolling Stones. Has anyone gotten bigger ripping off other people's songs?
3. Bruce Springsteen. Boring...
4. Nirvana
5. Classic Rock as a genre.

You don't like Classic Rock? Never would have guessed.

Aren't you a massive Led Zepplin fan?

Prince is hard to classify because he dabbled in so many genres. As he showed on "Little Red Corvette," he could play rock if he wanted to. and the guy was a heck of a guitar player - look up his solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony.

Just completed a road trip and heard a lot of music. Thought about this and came up with a list of artists I feel are overrated. I only picked "legend" status artists. I actually like some of the five but still think don't deserve the amount of praise heaped upon them.

In no order:
Elton John = strong start to his career but nothing good since the 70's imo. Plus, one of the worst songs ever in Candle/Wind.

Pear Jam = I know some here are going to disagree big time, but I associate them with helping bands like Creed exist. Yuck.

Coldplay = One really good album, a couple decent one's and several bad one's. Mega arena band that does little for me.

Kiss = Really fun gimmick but still a gimmick band that has no business still plodding along.

The Eurythmics = Great voice with annoying songs imo. No idea how they are a HOF band.

Fire away...
I think Elton John's musicality made up for some pretty goofy lyrics from Bernie Taupin, including CitW. A-side of Madman Across the Water just might be my single favorite album side.

Wonder how many people listed artists that they like but think that yeah, they're overrated. Or is this just a list of artists people don't like and can't understand why so many other people do? Seems like the later.

As for Led Zeppelin? They were on Letterman after he and they received their Kennedy Center honors. It was quite entertaining.

"Letterman mentioned that funnyman Jack Black claimed that Led Zeppelin's music "was about sex, it was about Vikings, it was about Vikings having sex" during his introduction of the band at the Kennedy Center event. To which bassist Jones quipped, "You missed the bit about the Vikings having sex with the Hobbits."

You forgot the VU 🤣

I was hoping to draw some fire with my post. But seriously, all the acts listed are way, way better, with timeless songs millions of people will still listen to make their days a little bit better.

VU is a top 5 band for me if that makes you feel better.

In Elvis Costello's autobiography, he said something like when he got started everyone was writing songs about wizards and dragons, which just didn't do anything for him. Gave me a chuckle. I like both, but EC is top 5 for me.

Yeah, we all could tell you were hoping to draw some fire. :ROFLMAO: Stephanie Says coincidentally came on as I was driving home last night. And I thought, what a lovely song; Pompous Elitist doesn't know what he's talking about.

John Paul Jones said something about we were writing songs about Love, Vikings, and Vikings making love to Hobbits. Something like that anyways...

Candy Says is the best "says" song by VU.

LOL. Iceland literally just said the same thing. You even liked it.

Hmm... Stephanie Says is probably one of my favorite songs (the strings, xylophone, lyrics, ebb & flow, softer tone than other VU songs) just an all around beautiful song.
I think we both can agree Lisa Says is the worst of the "says" songs. :)

True.

I would only classify my Velvet Underground/Lou Reed fandom as moderate, but I just don't see how they can be viewed as "overrated" with how influential they were. On the shortlist with the Ramones with what I consider as a trail blazer, I suppose that's a different discussion though.

Read the book, "Please Kill Me". Highly recommend it for a lot of what you just wrote above.

Definitely on my radar, I still have to get through Trouble Boys, Our Band Could Be Your Life and the Mould autobiography prior though.

As a big fan of the grunge era.....I too never got much into Pearl Jam. That's not to say that they don't have some great songs. They do. It just never clicked with me the way some of the other Seattle grunge bands did.

The Killers. I am clearly hearing something very different than a lot of other people.....because I'm pretty sure that they have.....and might still.....do arena tours. Befuddling.

I simply am not a fan of country music or 80's hair metal.....so I guess for my remaining three I'll go with Guns N Roses, Def Leopard and Van Halen. Once again....I don't hate these bands. I just don't get the draw of the lead vocalist making squealing sounds or the lyrical composition of most of their songs.

I'm right there with ya on 80s hair bands. What has nine arms and sucks?
But I also think 90s grunge is also overrated.
Though I don't think either has aged well. Do people still listen to that stuff? So...accurately rated?

A couple exchanges between my ex-wife and me:

Ex-wife: I love Bon Jovi. It was something my whole family liked growing up.
Me: Oh yeah? That was Cat Stevens for us.

Me: Who did Jump? Was that Van Halen?
Ex-wife: [gives me the most incredulous look I've ever received]
I mean...I was right, but the fact that I even had to ask.

I hate Bon Jovi so much.

My house was a lot of Simon and Garfunkel and Anne Murray.

Up through the vents came Led Zepplin and the Beatles.
