This performance today is embarrassing. We are terrible on both sides of the ball and I see a high school quality product and the scoreboard reflects that. All goodwill from the new stadium has been lost. We would not finish in the top half of the MAC with this team and staff. Mason did much, much more with less.

For the first time since he was fired, I wish we had Mason back.

This game is no different than Mase's last seven trips to Iowa/Wisconsin. Pretty similar to year 10 of his tenure when he lost by 25, 44 and 36 on the road. Short memory.

Maximus, we are down 31 with 5 minutes to go in the first half. I hated Mason's meltdowns (TT, Michigan, etc) but I always went into every game thinking that we could win. I don't anymore. This Big Ten season will be brutal. For non-Major schools, I am now convinced that you need a gimmick offense and load up all talent on one side of the ball (Northwestern, TT, etc). This performance by our D would be acceptable if it was due to talent being placed on our stellar O...that clearly is not the case.

I still think the firing was the only move we could make at that point, but at least with Mason I could enjoy 5-8 Saturday's per season. A bid to the Music City Bowl sounds pretty nice about now.

This all started when Mason semi-retired and stopped recruiting and caring after the 2003 season. For the following four seasons (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) the Gopher's recruiting was worse than every BCS team and almost every one of the other Division I teams in the country. Mason is the devil as far as I am concerned. Brewster and Kill are just two of his many victims.

Late last night I watched the 2003 replay of Michigan's comeback.... despite, WE DOMINATED the first 3.5 qtrs and had an offense and defense (sort of.. more than now anyway). And on top of it, WE WERE RANKED #13!!!!!!!! We shouldn't have lost that game, but played unbelievable. I went onto rivals after the game was over, and saw that Mason recruited lots of 2 stars and a few 3 stars to the Metrodome.. and fielded a good team. I truly miss being a fringe bowl team. Hopefully Kill can turn things around, but if he can't or his health won't allow him, let's just revert back to what worked, at least some of the time.. instead of NONE of the time.

Mason and his staff could have suited up the first 50 people through the gates on Saturday morning and still beat the pants off of Brew's or Kill's teams. The only good thing to come of this mess is that the website admin will never, ever have to worry about updating the script for name of this forum from 6 National Titles because there is no way in hell we are ever going to get #7. Heck, I would bet we don't sniff a Rose Bowl for another 40 years.

This except for the "Devil" part; really?

Mason tried to get himself fired that last year and was successful. Wish he didn't, but there you go.

Recruiting when you don't have a contract past Dec. 31, 2005 doesn't help either.

get real, this performance is not surprising and is consistent with the last forty years. Yes the Mason years had a few exceptions and we all would take those exceptions now. The fact is the "The University" is still not ready to take the plunge. Kill is a fine coach but can't produce with this crew.

Mason was the best thing to happen to Gopher Football in the last 20 years... I don't see how anyone can despute that... even if you hate the guy...

Sadly, it may be time to acknowledge that this is true. I think I will compose an apology letter to Glen Mason and ask for his forgiveness that I hated him so.

Yeah and they also won 10 games that year.

And what did that get you? Conference title? New Year's Day bowl game? Spring board to bigger and even better things? Nope that was the pinnacle and the pinnacle included Mase's annual annihilation at Iowa and Wisconsin.

Mason looked good compared to these guys, but he was fading. That said, he should not have ben fired unless they had an Alvarez-level coach to replace him. The timing of his firing was fatal to that - and Brewster was a terrible choice. The new coaches seem worse than Horton and as bad as Brewster. No fundamentals, no hustle, no brains on offense, poor tackling, little effort. What with the ongoing health problems, we may see the Kansas coaches leaving sooner rather than later.

This. His self-destructive behavior that last year was the only thing that kept him from still being on the sidelines.

Agreed..........and I was sick of him. Look on the bright side, no sideline interference calls from the blinding reflections off his Kohler white crowns.

Are you serious? Bigger and better things? 10 wins is about as good as we're gonna get. We will never be able to compete with Wisconsin and Iowa on a regular basis. Take a dose of reality son.

That may have been part of it but one of the main reasons Mason stopped working and started coasting as Gophers coach was losing the OSU job to Tressel. Mason knew he would never get his dream job and decided to get an early start on his retirement. And every Gopher football fan is now helping to pay for Mason's early retirement.

At least smiling Glen managed to get a first down before halftime.

That was then. Mason was lucky (and happy) to get fired when he did because he knew the team was headed downhill because of his pathetic recruiting during after 2003. If he had remained coach his teams would not have been any better than Brewster's and Kill's. Maybe his offensive line might have performed better but the Gophers would not have gone any more bowl games than the two that Brewster did.

+1. I have been a Gopher fan for 25 years. My first memory is the 1986 Liberty Bowl. In the entire time since, the only time we were decent was when Mason was the coach. It is too late to bring him back. In 2-3 years if Kill doesn't work out and we have a new AD, maybe he can pull a Bill Snyder.

I miss the zone blocking scheme when even an undersized and overmatch offensive line could help move the ball down field.

+1. Thank you. Very true.

So the guy who went 31-24 in his last 55 games is the 'devil' and the guys who have gone 18-37 in the 55 games since are 'victims.' Got it. Makes perfect sense.

Yeah. He did pretty well to make bowl games with "semi-recruiting." Must be a pretty decent coach.
