Thoughts on Horton from someone who knows him well

Hey Doogie, did you notice how no one in this thread is questioning your comments and challenging your source when you are telling them what they want to hear? I am guessing if your coaching friend had negative things to sa about Horton the posters would have been all over you.
Glad you finally figured it out, this is a Gopher fan site, fans support the team, they don't try to drag it down, you should give it a try.

Fans support their team? Maybe if they're happy with garbage like this. Team is never going to improve when the fan base is full of "Oh well!" or "Grass is greener but I'm happy with a dirt lot" crap. Go from one guy with no business running an offense to a guy who's PROVEN he has no business running an offense. What a joke of a program. As a fan i want better, and I'm not going to get it brainlessly applauding assinine hires like this one.

Who did you want to see hired? Tony Dungy?

You got it wrong! Doogie adequately described his source instead of the usual heard a rumor from a guy who heard a rumor. I don't think anyone has ever questioned Doogie's honesty, and whenever he's used a legitimate source, no one's hammered him for it.

Did you notice that when something positive is said about MN football, you bring negativity to the board?

so what is considered higher up. NFL QB coach or bottom tear big ten team OC?? Because Hobit Fisch and Horton basically swapped roles.

McKnight was a two-star, Bennett was a two-star, Weber sometimes PLAYS like a two-star, Hoese is a not-in-database. That's four of the six starting skill guys right there.

Bennett is not a starter and I think it is an oxy moron to use the words Weber, Hoese and skill in the same sentence. And Weber will not be starting next year.

I somewhat agree, I think this hire is terrible and we must have been turned down by every capable person we interviewed. This is not a big name or a sexy hire that would turn heads, we needed a hire that would be front page ESPN worthy. Hopefully we will be back in the market for an OC again next year and can get it right then. With that said I am still positive about the program as a whole and think Brewster is doing a good enough job to deserve more time, it takes time to take it to the next level.

Was Jedd Fisch a big name, I like the hire. A lot of teaching experience, our offensive staff needs a leader. The way I look at it, he can't do any worse. Fundamentally did Gray or Weber get better under a guy who never played QB. Fisch won't need to coach Matt Hasselbeck in the NFL, he'll need to be his film watching buddy, Jedd can handle that, he couldn't handle teaching fundamentals to his offensive personnel.

Pete Carrol won't start Matt Hasselbeck next year, he sucks. Carroll will draft a QB or make a trade. If your college athletes need fundamentals taught to them they should not be on the field. Fundamentals are taught in pee wees and high school.

Wow.

I believe the old Tom Kelly line is "You're never too old to work on your fundamentals."

I get that it is a fan site and I have not questioned Doogie or his sources on here. I just think it is funny that so many others felt the need to question him and his contacts every time he posted something that wasn't pro Brewster/pro gopher, regardless if it was true or not. They used the excuse of him not being a true journalist and a hack because he didn't name his sources. Here he relayed some positive info about our new coordinator and did not name his source and was not questioned about it at all. If you are going to question him and his sources as has been done in the past, fine but atleast be truthful and say it is because you didn't like the contents of his posts and don't hide behind some false pretense of journalistic standards.

Serious question: in your 1,240 posts, have you ever stated anything that a genuine fan of the Gopher football program would construe as positive?

I ask because I've been reading this site for about 18 months and I honestly recall nothing you've said which has been of a positive bent.

Doogie - Thanks for providing the initial insight, it is appreciated. What can your buddy share with us regarding Horton's experience calling plays, putting a game plan together and making adjustments during a game. It's great to hear that he is a good guy and works well with QB's, but I hope he can excel at all aspects of the OC position.

Surprisingly, it was some positive content from him.

He is called out because he, like other media members in town, have a transparent agenda to see Brew ridden out of town.

Bank and GG everytime you type something you keep showing what you don't know,FOOTBALL

What is there to be positive about?

What is there to be positive about?

How about Hageman coming here? Carter switching his commitment? Gray's game at NU? The crazy good luck we had against MSU?

You can dislike the direction of the program, but still occasionally find some nice things to say if you support the team. In 1,240 posts, one could luck into a positive statement.

See, the problem is, your kind of fan has to destroy. If you don't like everything that's going on it's garbage. The rest of us don't know how many things have to be perfect in order for fans like you to be happy. And that's garbage.

Thank you. Finally someone talks some sense about Weber. He is not a good QB. He has never been a good QB (D1 college). He won't be a good QB. You have to throw the ball with some level of accuracy to play at this level. Have you people not noticed the frustration his receivers were showing last season? Did anyone count how many times Weber kept points off the board with inaccurate passes? What is there about inaccurate passing that falls into the category of coach responsibility?

Not replacing him, if there are any viable options whatsoever on the bench. That is my one, and generally only, fault with Brewster. Something, anything, should have been tried as an alternative to Weber last year. Try Gray, Pittman, or Stoudamire...anything to keep the ineptitude from continuing.

Is it possible that Weber will find his mojo next year? Sure it is; but if Weber is announced as the starting QB going into next year, I will be having a couple of extra drinks in the tailgate lot.

I like this hire alot. To me it's cosgrove on the O side. No it's not a sexy hire, but that's not what we need. Brew is bringing in talent, we need coaching that can develop them and use them correctly, not some NFL wack that coaches off a spread sheet. Guys like Fisch, manage workouts and chart progressions. Perfect for solid pro players. Not so much for college.

"I think this hire is terrible

- You did go on and on about how Jedd F. must have been a good because of the successful people who wanted him i.e. Carroll and Shanahan. Horton was wanted by Alvarez and Linehan.

" we needed a hire that would be front page ESPN worth

- Really? Didn't we need a guy who can teach QBs and run a Badger-like Offense?

I somewhat agree

- With Demi ? Are you bat-bleep crazy or just drunkingly insane?

Thanks Doogie. It is great to hear the insight from a close source about Horton. I really like the hire, very solid and should bring some coaching maturity to overall a young staff. Plus the connection to many other staff members should help with continuity.

Doogie, I know your dislike for Brew so for you to post something positive is easy for me to accept because it goes against of what imo is an agenda against him. That being said I know you want the program to do well like everyone (most everyone) on the board does despite our different views on things.

Speaking of the mustache, this man is now in the AL Central

And, we've also added a stache to our coaching staff.

So what does this mean for us? We all win.

MBAGuy,

You should plan on being intoxicated for all of next fall.

Adam Weber will reclaim his spot as one of the top QB's in the Big 11.:D

Excellent hire by the Gophs. Jeff was the QB coach at UW and play at the postion improved dramatically under him. Never was the OC at UW, worked under Brian White and then Paul Chryst. Horton is very bright, experienced in the type of FB played in the Big Ten, and just a all round college FB savant. Jeff will bring energy to the program and is an interesting interview. Weber and the other QBs will grow under Horton, assuming he will also be the QB coach.

Of course he can't play offensive line for MN and in my opinion that is your big weakness. During the Alvarez era us Badgers learned that if you want to enjoy success, you better be solid in the OL and DL. In years were we weren't solid there the results suffered. Most of our solid building blocks in the OL and to a lesser extent in the DL are Wisconsin bred boys. I would be concerned about guys like Beau Allen and the one last year that got away. Henderson? Reading these boards, I think quite a few fans, not all, want to focus on skill positions. IMO your skill is competitive, you need a better D and OL.

But a hire like Horton? Yeah you guys should be tipping a few back and celebrating. It acutally scares me a bit that Brewster can get something like this right. Good luck to Jeff Horton while he is with the Gophers. Us Badgers owe him a debt of gratitude.
