Our sports intern, Nate, is at the Brewster press conference... he sent me a text saying that Brewster announced that Bennett will start at RB... Hoese will play... and Manuel will officially start. Also, Theret is officially out.

Was the presser live anywhere? I doubt it, but I thought I would ask.

Thanks for the update.

Nate with one more message: there actually is some doubt over whether Hoese will make the trip... Brewster corrected himself.

From MV: Garin listed w/ first team, not Hageman.

Also from MV, Alford will not play for breaking team rules. Is that the real reason Olson has been getting all the 1st team LT reps?

I'm betting this is because MTSU is very small. I would imagine that Hageman will be starting by the conference schedule. Garin shouldn't be starting against the Big Ten slate, at least not this year. With he and Wilhite starting, we would get eaten alive by the run against Bucky, OSU, PSU, etc.

And we won't get any credit for having some of our players suspended from the game...

No surprise that Theret is not playing, but it still hurts. Our defense certainly could use his leadership going into this game. Especially considering the relative youth of the defense.

Totally agree he is a coach on the field.

Please clarify - "Theret is officially out." - The first half, the game, the season?

Although you could say that it is his LACK of leadership that has led to him being in street clothes on Thursday.

The Alford "situation" is the same situation that tripped up McKinley and Dandridge last year so I think we can expect he will be out for the first two games. Also, Garin as starter at DE is no surprise, given the fact that MTSU's starting left tackle weighs 260 and we are going to utilize more of a speed package. Coach Cross uses many different combinations of the D-line and we will see all of the young guys play plenty of snaps, including Hageman, KGM and even Leston Simpson.

I could be wrong but I think Theret just doesn't want to play because it is going to be too hot and humid down there.

I posted the same thing across the street earlier today, that with the smaller DE's it makes sense to play Wilhite/Simpson/Garin (Well I might have forgotten to mention Garin, but the thought was there :).

* Credit where credit is due. Doogie you've really stepped up your game. Kudos.

I'll take White Athlete Buzz Phrases for $400, Alex.

LOL, this is true, but in this case, it's valid. He's a three year starter, and with Collado is the only defensive player to be here since Brewster's gotten here, if I recall correctly. With the youth on defense, we could very much so use his experience out there.

Also, I hope Manuel is ready for live bullets, I think MTSU is gonna try to fling it all over the place.

I'm pumped for Manuel to play. I think this is a great year for him to learn under fire. I'm not the biggest Theret fan in the world. I've seen him lose contain and make too many poor decisions over the last couple of years.

If my memory servers Dom Barber got the last title of Coach on the field when the 2007 secondary was inexperienced with Collado, Theret, Thomas and Harris.

I don't remember if he was white though. Must be the heat from growing up in the South.

This game is easy to preview.

Either we whip them up front or we don't.

If the latter, I'll be afraid--regardless of the outcome.

One day as a member (under this moniker), and you've already overstayed your welcome.

Because he's making light of overused cliches? That makes sense.

Why so miserable? We're supposed to be a happy-go-lucky lot according to the Strib article today.
