Tubby - as bad as it felt like it got here - still was not a bad coach. He was just average and on a flat line course for the future. Firing him was the right thing. However, you don't fire average and pay $2.5 million to do it and get anything less than a home run hire. To me that means you don't have a long list - you have a short list.

Use this short time to take your run at Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart and Buzz Williams. IMO- that's it. You don't get him you've got the right choice right here for all the things you need to do. Teague is going to need to swallow his Villa 7 pride if that's a barrier and do the right thing. If they pass on Flip to go to Grant or some other guy that hasn't hit it out of the park yet, that's foolish.

The local recruits know Flip and like him and he has a shot at the Big 3. The ex players endorse him. The boosters like him. The fan base would be pumped up. He's a great coach and the antithesis of Tubby on offense. He's likely a low cost option with a great, great story to tell recruits. A guy who is actually passionate about the U and that's refreshing.

This isn't that tough.

This is spot on bga1! With apologies to Bob laidlow...I am a big Flip supporter as well. If not one of the 3 young hot shots, take the sure thing. He will be competitive right away.

I do like Tim Miles, but assume he is not a candidate.

Villa 7 pride? There are so many coaches they are connected to its almost scary. If they want to hire the current great assistant coach who turns into the next big coach they could.

Agree on this. My thinking has been along similar lines, though I would add Gregg Marshall to that short list of home run hires.

If you are Teague and you gambled (maybe more than he realizes) on a Tubby-Fire presto chango Home-Run-Hire, you can't fall back to a lesser choice in the established coaching ranks. Then we are back to Maturi mode, and I think Teague knows he cannot go to that dark place. Flip is the ultimate out should our swing for the fences come up empty. Will he work out? Who knows, but at least he will energize the base.

It's obvious to me. Good job putting it down, bga.

We need a head coach that can credibly tell these kids, "I'll get you to the NBA." Then he needs a practice facility when the McDonald's All Americans start coming in. Otherwise Tubby could have stayed. Flip is high on the list to get this done.

Who knows of him? Who would be excited? Who is sure he would be the next great coach? I can't guarantee that Flip would be GREAT as a college coach, but I can guarantee excitement which means we will get our share of the local talent and we will get the money to do the things needed. Bring in Harvey Grant. He might be a fine coach. The buzz will be gone in a day. Same with a Villa 7 assistant. You don't replace Tubby Smith with a no name.

I think Marshall is not interested and I don't think Williams is either. No clue on Stevens but I think he's a real long shot at best.

Teague will hire the right guy for this progrm. Do not be surprised if he is not on any of these lists. This guy knows hoops better than most AD's...Be patient and have confidence in his hire...........

Stevens is my top choice, however long a shot he is.....

I agree with the premise that you don't fire Tubby Smith only to announce that Gregg Marshall, Enfield, or some other coach that no one had heard of 1 month ago is the answer. It has to be someone perceived to be a big-time hire. This is very different than the football team hiring JK to rebuild the program. The basketball program is already ok, you need a guy that can move it from ok to really good/great. I don't know why anyone thinks Flip could do that, since he's never elevated the level of play for any of the teams he has coached in the NBA.

Back Flip

The young hotshots won't come here, unless a new practice facility is guaranteed. Flip will come and help get it.

I think Woody already has his guy. I bet it is announced
by early next week. If it is somebody whose team is still alive
( NCAA, NIT) after the tourneys are over.

Yup.

Marshall isn't interested. That leaves Enfield as the only other option. I like him a lot but he's a huge, huge reach. Might be Tom Izzo, might be Dan Monson. Get this done now.

As it would seem we've passed press conference time already today, i really now believe that we are indeed waiting for someone who is still playing in the tournament; and this is why i think it's going to be Andy Enfield.

If we are waiting for our next coach to finish the NCAA tournament, my guess is it would be Buzz Williams over anyone. I don't think Enfield will move off the beaches of Florida for this job. Buzz is a proven commodity, a big time recruiter, and is only 5 hours down the road.

Though pride plays into it, the desire for younger and exciting coach could get momentum for the school. That said, I think you are pretty spot on and think Flip would be a good hire.

I agree with beej. Firing Tubby was the only course of action. Taking a shot at Shaka, Buzz and Brad (I don't love him as much as some others) is well worth the risk. Enfield? Fun story. Unproven. Not interested. Flip is a very solid Plan B whom I would take over a hot assistant because he might, maybe, maybe, maybe be able to get Tyus and he could probably get the PF built. (Tyus isn't going to sign with a hot assistant.)

No matter how this plays out, firing Tubby was the right decision.

That NEVER happens at Minnesota you so you can discount it right now. We gotta a plan.

We had at least 12 months to get ready for a new football hire.

What number on the list was Jerry Kill?

It's a trick question. He wasn't on the list until they started to freak out after a bad few weeks.

Andy Enfield = kill me.

I means we went into this unprepared.

In reality, the Flip thing means the same thing. He has been openly campaigning for the job. If he's the guy, we essentially missed on who we wanted.

Who wouldn't be interested in a coach closing in on their 60's who is coming off of being canned from 3 NBA jobs in 6 years?

If Flip has something else going on we should look into Bill Fitch or Mike Fratello.

If Jerry Kill wasn't on the list than Maturi would be more of an idiot than if the search played out like you're suggesting.

Here's a fun game to play with Andy Enfield.

If he hadn't beaten Georgetown, would his name be discussed?

Can we agree that one win should not green light him for the B10?

Just like one game shouldn't have been enough to make the Woofs draft Flynn.

True, better fit in BT.

So is this how you're all going to roll? We really didn't want him the most? Everybody wanted Shaka before Tubby was even fired...now he really is not our top choice! This was major blow! The AD\Coach relationship mean't nothing.
