The Uncle Rico GH QB Experts...

Who the heck is Uncle Rico?

This made me laugh. First because Napolean Dynamite was just hilarious, but also because I imagine over 50% of the posters were asking the same question.

Also, Perra had an offer from USD and probably should have taken it. I very much doubt that he ever plays a snap for the Gophers when the outcome of the game is in doubt.

If he wants to get into college coaching then going to Minnesota was definitely the right choice

Good post. This is absolutely where the coaches deserve some criticism. Streveler is in his 3rd year and the staff won't allow him to attempt a pass in a real game. McKinzy is gone because he was beat out by a walk-on. We missed badly on QBs in 2 recruiting classes in a row. Our options now, in year 5, are stick with Mitch or start a true freshman.
It's really hard to figure out why the top QBs don't want to practice indoors with a roof leaking and eat training table meals in a hallway. Wish the coaches knew how to recruit...

QB development is the weakness of this staff. It is a very bad sign when a QB looks his best when he gets his first playing time. The longer the staff has to prepare a QB the more frightened they look and the less he is trusted to throw the ball.

Your go to excuse about a leaking roof and eating in the hallway has been played out. Time for you to come up with a new go to.

Maybe there's hope now that you've identified the problems. I hope the coaches read this and, with the help of some wise strib reporters, and some Gopher fans who are experts at reading sideline body language, we can save the season and program.

Spot on, except,
I do think Kill is being stubborn by hampering the offensive play calling. I think that's pretty widely agreed upon. This offense is very vanilla. .

Would have appreciated more vanilla to start the game. You get 5 yards from Smith on the first play from scrimmage and then play 2 you call a pass when our pass offense is struggling, ML rolls out sees nothing on the pass but then throws it OB on purpose despite the fact that he has room to run for a gain for sure, probably a first down. We then fail to covert 3rd and 5 and go on to fail to gain a first down for what feels like forever with almost every possession containing a pass play we fail to complete. Being more vanilla might have been more successful to start the game.

I was kind of think the same thing. Run it until it fails.

Sorry to whine here, but I can't watch another two years of Leidner if he plays like he did today. In all seriousness, there are some valid points in this post and I completely trust this coaching staff, but unless Leidner has six seconds to throw on every down, the Gophers are in for a long season. Opponents now have plenty of film on him and CSU proved today that if you stack the box and put pressure on Mitch then he will make some poor decisions more times than not. I would not be surprised to see Croft play in the next two games, IF, Kill thinks he elusiveness can help this team going into conference play. I know one thing for sure, if Mitch continues to play like he did today, he will not continue to start through his senior year. Croft will get a chance before Leidner graduates. All that being said the entire offense has got to get healthy and get their **** together. Thanks God for 4 CSU turnovers today. GO Gophers!

People were saying the same thing at this time last year. I'm concerned but that is more about the entire offense, not just Leidner.

Yeh I like the coaches but knowing how a backup responds in a game vs scrimmage isn't fallible. Case in point, CSU should have started the freshman QB Key and not waited until the 2nd half.

Despite the recruiting hurdles, we've been able to land some pretty good players at every other position...so your argument doesn't really hold water.

Just got into a chat with two OSU fans and an Iowa fan, and all three talked very highly of Leidner and actually
seem more informed than most of our posters...talked about how very accurate he can be when he has protection,
how much better he is in the no-huddle, how stale our offense has seemed, same 4-5 plays and how hard it is
to keep defenses off balance when the offense isn't balanced. Talked about how good can a team look starting our
first two games against #2 and at a 10 win team, when everyone else were playing FCS cupcakes.
Both OSU fans seemed to be most concerned with the Minnesota game than anyone else on their sched.
It was actually quite a refreshing convo and elevated my chin a bit about or offense situation.

Like Eric Murray? It wasn't really an argument, I just believe there is a school of thought that our coaching staff is pretty good at developing players. The "promise" of the facilities upgrade is a big factor in our '16 commits, don't you think? QB is the most fickle position in football, IMO, based on the number of first-round NFL draft flops. JK and his staff have identified and developed some pretty good QBs in their careers at every level, so far. Seems to me Mitch doesn't have a big ego, so maybe his "swag" is a little low, and I think he wants to do well for everybody else more than for himself. He's already benefiting from a growing number of starts, working in the film room, and seems like a guy who can perform in the clutch. If he is indeed on the verge of a breakthrough, I'd like to ride it out instead of starting from scratch again.

Sounds promising, but I don't doubt for a second that OSU should be most concerned with MSU.

I said the same, they countered with 'we know who were going up against with MSU, Minnesota could catch us off guard if we're not
careful'

Yea, I mean after all, the OSU and Iowa fans see more of Leidner than us Gopher fans.

Weber being 3rd in Big Ten passing yards is a meaningless stat. He was durable and never got hurt, played virtually every snap in his 4 years, and was on consistently bad teams that were almost always behind and threw a ton. Of course he was going to put up a ton of yards. Post his win-loss record and efficiency numbers and then let's have a discussion.

That being said, the asinine hyperbole on this board over Leidner is laughable. I will very much enjoy the constant little-girl whining on this board as Leidner starts each of the remaining 22 regular season games over the next two seasons (plus whatever postseason games take place) and ends his career as the winningest QB in school history.

+1 to your second paragraph DP.

Weber was tied for the second most accurate QB in Gophers history. As for the wins and losses, Brewster may have had just a little to do with that.

Yeah and he also threw short passes on almost every other play, and had the Gophers' best WR in my lifetime (Decker) to throw to. Decker made those stats for Weber, not the other way around.

That said, Weber would, unfortunately, be an upgrade over the current situation. Certainly Gray, Nelson, and now Leidner have all suffered by not having that go-to receiver that Weber had.

Remember how bad the Gophers were on offense when Decker was out injured?

Here's what I've learned on GH since 2009:

1. Weber is the worst QB ever (even though he ended up with the 3rd most passing yards in B1G history)... why don't we give Gray a shot? He was a highly regarded recruit, he's got to be really good, right?
2. Gray sucks and can't pass, surely Max Shortell is the answer...
3. Max isn't good, let's go back to Gray, at least he can run...
4. Phil Nelson is the QB of the future, we need to play him now.
5. Nelson is terrible, let's give Mitch a shot...
6. Mitch isn't a D-1 QB, let's play Streveler! Oh, but Streveler can't pass.
7. Let's play Perra!!! He's a walk-on who had zero D-1 offers, but I think he's unbelievable because I heard good things about him in practice...or
8. Croft! Brilliant! He's 6'6" 190 lbs, I'm sure he can handle getting hit!!! Besides, my 8th grade son could complete 50% of his passes in a D-1 game.

For those who think Kill is being stubborn by continuing to play Leidner, you have no clue what you are talking about. If anything, Kill is borderline reckless with pulling redshirts and playing younger kids when he thinks it may help his team. How long did it take him to make Rodney Smith the workhorse over senior Roderick Williams? 1 half. He pulled Rashad Still's redshirt in game 1 despite having redshirted 3 receivers last year. Kill pulled Nelson's redshirt 7 games into the 2012 season because he thought Nelson gave them the best chance to win. He pulled Connor Mayes redshirt 6 games into last year and Mayes barely played all year. Complain about Mitch all you want, he leaves a lot to be desired. But the staff is quick to play younger guys if they think it will give the team a lift. The fact that they haven't is telling...and no, you aren't better than Mitch, and neither is the QB at St. Johns. The QB at St. Johns would have been on a stretcher wearing a cast at halftime from all the hits he had to absorb.

I'm not a Leidner apologist, he was lousy in the 1st half. But he was clutch when it mattered today, and we haven't had many QBs in the last 30 years who we could say that about.

This folks is an excellent last word. Right freaking on Mr Galt

The problem with Mitch is he's so inconsistent. If we get the 2nd half Mitch for the rest of the season, we can win 9 games.

Maxx was as go-to as you could possibly ask for; Mitch is missing him BIG time. Receiver drops were TERRIBLE in CSU game, it's a bad combo when you get an inconsistent passer combined with inconsistent recievers.

Oh yea, run the ball! And then run it some more!

I'll throw this out all the time:

1886/3762 passes 50.1% 197 yards/game 173 TDs 220 Int

HOF QB Joe Namath. Everyone frickin loved the guy...he's just a winner...blah blah blah. The guy was under .500 as a starter.

Mitch plays WAY better.

And he's a winner.

One of the worst takes I've ever seen. Wow, the fans have been dissatisfied by poor QB play? What a mind blowing take.

The point is you have to continue to look for that QB that is going to elevate your team. Leidner does the exact opposite. At this point, I can say without a doubt that Leidner is the worst QB on that list 1-6.

And I think you fail to realize the point of a good QB. It changes everything. It opens the run game, it helps the O-line by making the defense actually have to respect the passing game, and it helps the defense by letting them rest once in a while.

But you think we should just sit on our hands and say, "Oh well. He's trying!"

And guess what, you don't have to be clutch against CSU if you play well the entire game.
