Here's what I've learned on GH since 2009:

1. Weber is the worst QB ever (even though he ended up with the 3rd most passing yards in B1G history)... why don't we give Gray a shot? He was a highly regarded recruit, he's got to be really good, right?
2. Gray sucks and can't pass, surely Max Shortell is the answer...
3. Max isn't good, let's go back to Gray, at least he can run...
4. Phil Nelson is the QB of the future, we need to play him now.
5. Nelson is terrible, let's give Mitch a shot...
6. Mitch isn't a D-1 QB, let's play Streveler! Oh, but Streveler can't pass.
7. Let's play Perra!!! He's a walk-on who had zero D-1 offers, but I think he's unbelievable because I heard good things about him in practice...or
8. Croft! Brilliant! He's 6'6" 190 lbs, I'm sure he can handle getting hit!!! Besides, my 8th grade son could complete 50% of his passes in a D-1 game.

For those who think Kill is being stubborn by continuing to play Leidner, you have no clue what you are talking about. If anything, Kill is borderline reckless with pulling redshirts and playing younger kids when he thinks it may help his team. How long did it take him to make Rodney Smith the workhorse over senior Roderick Williams? 1 half. He pulled Rashad Still's redshirt in game 1 despite having redshirted 3 receivers last year. Kill pulled Nelson's redshirt 7 games into the 2012 season because he thought Nelson gave them the best chance to win. He pulled Connor Mayes redshirt 6 games into last year and Mayes barely played all year. Complain about Mitch all you want, he leaves a lot to be desired. But the staff is quick to play younger guys if they think it will give the team a lift. The fact that they haven't is telling...and no, you aren't better than Mitch, and neither is the QB at St. Johns. The QB at St. Johns would have been on a stretcher wearing a cast at halftime from all the hits he had to absorb.

I'm not a Leidner apologist, he was lousy in the 1st half. But he was clutch when it mattered today, and we haven't had many QBs in the last 30 years who we could say that about.

Weber being 3rd in Big Ten passing yards is a meaningless stat. He was durable and never got hurt, played virtually every snap in his 4 years, and was on consistently bad teams that were almost always behind and threw a ton. Of course he was going to put up a ton of yards. Post his win-loss record and efficiency numbers and then let's have a discussion.

That being said, the asinine hyperbole on this board over Leidner is laughable. I will very much enjoy the constant little-girl whining on this board as Leidner starts each of the remaining 22 regular season games over the next two seasons (plus whatever postseason games take place) and ends his career as the winningest QB in school history.

It is a cruel fact of nature that I cannot offer to bear your child. Thank you.

Also, Perra had an offer from USD and probably should have taken it. I very much doubt that he ever plays a snap for the Gophers when the outcome of the game is in doubt.

I'm not really defending Weber, just pointing out that he's in a long line of despised QBs despite probably being the best one we've had in the last 10 years.

Spot on, except,
I do think Kill is being stubborn by hampering the offensive play calling. I think that's pretty widely agreed upon. This offense is very vanilla. It's not because of the over injured o-line (we've had that before) it's not because we can't open up the playbook with our QB (Leidner has been qb for 3 years now), we've had fun, fast and good game planned offenses before, but mostly when Kill was out with medical issues. I know it's horrible of me to say, but it's true. How many were saying how fun and spread out and fast our offense looked when Kill wasn't handcuffing Limey? Kill's a great coach and program builder, he just has to let Limey run his own offense.

Cupito is by far the best QB the Gophers have had in the last 10 years.

We could argue endlessly about the additional talent Cupito had at O-line, RB, WR, and TE, but let's save that for another thread. I think only one of them actually made it on an NFL roster.

We're not talking about the best pro prospect, we're talking about the best Gophers QB. It wasn't close. The 2006 Gophers squad was about on par with the 2008 and 2009 squads, and the difference in QB play was vast.

Wish I could enjoy the little girl whining as much as you, but I did enjoy your post.

You're right, Mitchy has the TREMENDOUSLY good fortune of playing on the first Gophers team in decades that has a defense, arguably the best Gophers defense in a few generations.

He also has had the astonishingly good fortune of a number of things go his way on the way towards the starting QB position landing squarely in his lap; Nelson leaving, Shortell leaving, and an extremely conservative coaching staff that is not going to roll the dice with a young and unproven QB on the depth chart.

Mitch is going to win a ton of games during his time at the U. He's a great leader, the guys look up,to him, and he's tough as nails.

And all of the above has fk all to do with whether or not he's very good at his craft. Mitch is the QB because nobody has taken the spot from him, not because he's proven to be particularly skilled at the position.

Who the heck is Uncle Rico?

Weber was tied for the second most accurate QB in Gophers history. As for the wins and losses, Brewster may have had just a little to do with that.

The coaching staff can impact the quarterback position in several ways:

  1. Recruit
  2. Develop
  3. Retain
  4. Start (Play)
  5. Other?
Seemingly, 100% of the energy of the fanbase goes into criticizing #4. My opinion is that the "backup is the best QB" argument is just a bunch of misplaced energy. Sort of a red herring. Coaches aren't dumb. They see all the players practice. We have an elite defense, solid special teams, and a flawed QB that won 8 games last year. Throwing a freshman QB into the mix would be playing for next year. I trust the coaches.

That said, the coaches aren't free from criticism. It baffles me that more of our attention isn't questioning the recruitment and development of the QB position.

So in other words, the question I would ask isn't "Why is Leidner starting?", it's more like, "I trust the coaches that Leidner is the best. But why is he the best option?"

Of course, Uncle Rico was a character in Napoleon Dynamite. He would have been all state if coach would have just put him in.

Watching Leidner play college football is like watching Tim Tebow play in the NFL...

Sorry to whine here, but I can't watch another two years of Leidner if he plays like he did today. In all seriousness, there are some valid points in this post and I completely trust this coaching staff, but unless Leidner has six seconds to throw on every down, the Gophers are in for a long season. Opponents now have plenty of film on him and CSU proved today that if you stack the box and put pressure on Mitch then he will make some poor decisions more times than not. I would not be surprised to see Croft play in the next two games, IF, Kill thinks he elusiveness can help this team going into conference play. I know one thing for sure, if Mitch continues to play like he did today, he will not continue to start through his senior year. Croft will get a chance before Leidner graduates. All that being said the entire offense has got to get healthy and get their **** together. Thanks God for 4 CSU turnovers today. GO Gophers!

...he was clutch when it mattered today.
Good post, John. For all he lacks, Mitch has some things I admire, and for some inexplicable reason, he seems pretty clutch. As bad as the first half was, and some of his 2nd half misses looked, it looks to me like there's more "good Mitch" this year and if he keeps expanding that, we could be pretty good as the season progresses.

Good post. This is absolutely where the coaches deserve some criticism. Streveler is in his 3rd year and the staff won't allow him to attempt a pass in a real game. McKinzy is gone because he was beat out by a walk-on. We missed badly on QBs in 2 recruiting classes in a row. Our options now, in year 5, are stick with Mitch or start a true freshman.

I mostly agree. All of the QB's you mentioned are subpar, with the possible exception of Croft. We're clearly playing ML7 because there isn't anyone better. I think the frustration is that after all these years, there isn't anyone better. Between our below average OLine, way below average receivers and way below average qbs, that is a fair question.
