As a college football fanatic and season ticket holder, I'll offer this:

It's a myth that "real" football schools have non-student fans who stand the entire game. I've been to Auburn, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Cal, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Northwestern and Ohio State...and never saw non-student fans standing the entire game at any of these places.
I don't think it's too much to ask that non-student fans stand only on third downs and key plays. To me, it's downright rude and inconsiderate not to do so.
Funny, I was watching Oregon last night in one of the great atmospheres in college football, and it might be a big shock, but the majority of their fans SIT when it's not a big play!
This bashing of "old people" is mean-spirited and just plain wrong. I've sat in several sections over the years, and have NEVER had an "old person" yell at me to sit on third down or big plays.
If you want to stand the entire game, do what I've done on occasion: Simply move to the top of either level behind the seats. You can stand all you want. Or, move to the student section.
And no, I'm not old or out of shape. I'm approaching middle-age, and have run several marathons and still run races of various distances fairly often, including this morning.

Sounds like the voice of reason. I'm not sure that will work here.

I've been to 5 games in Iowa City. I do not sit in the student section. I sit with mostly Hawkeye fans (yes, I'm friends with some inbreeders from Iowa).

Every fan around me, stood for the entire game. They sat down for halftime. That was all.

I've been there twice, and did not experience this.

you have to be a complete idiot to stand the entire game.

no wonder you saw that in iowa.

Seems to me that you lose the effect of standing if you stand the entire game. When you stand only for big plays, scores, or even third downs it has more effect. Kind of like someone who swears every other word. People soon become oblivious to it and tune you out. If the students want to do it in their sections more power to them since they all seem to do it.

cp gopher is right for the part about most non-student fans not standing unless it's a big moment in the game. penn state and wisconsin fans operate in the way he describes for sure. however, i'll agree with some other posters about iowa. the two times i've visited kinnick for a gopher v. iowa game the fans have stood up the majority, if not the entire game, especially along the sidelines. i think the reason they stand down there is because the bleachers are set so low to the ground they have to stand to see the action, thus starting a chain reaction for several rows behind them. both times i was there for gopher games i had seats near row one and did notice that the non student end zone sections sat much more than we did. perhaps necessity is part of the equation down there?

This post is spot on. I have been to iowa city and Madison twice each and only students stood all the time. It is a stupid debate. Stand for big plays otherwise sit down.

Spot on! People can slither into the student section if they want to stand during the whole game. There are plenty of seats available.

What is this the offseason? What a stupid thing to argue about.

be careful

Hey - be careful now. You're gonna draw out all the wonderful level-headed iowa fans who inhibit our territory. They will cyberstalk your postings, figure out where you live and where you sit in the TCF Stadium. Then they send you a cute little threatening private email. Very nice.

non students should sit during 1st and 2nd down, and punting 4th downs.

DO: Stand on all defensive 3rd downs

NO NOT: Fly up out of your seat when Weber drops back to pass and you determine its a pass play. Standing without warning and not giving the people behind you ample time to stand, forcing them to miss part of the play, is terrible etiquette.

Well said.

 no kidding, we have one guy in the row in front of us that does this. it really makes no sense. he literally leaps out of his seat on 2 yard dive plays. fingers crossed that we move next year.

I know a graduate of Notre Dame who has been a season ticket holder, who has told me this about ND games. He doesn't sit on the bench. He stands and is standing sideways to accommodate all the people in his row. They don't sit, because it is not possible to sit. It is extremely difficult to get in and out of his row. When Minnesota gets to be like ND, we will then have arrived at big time college football.

I agree with standing on 3rd downs and big plays or exciting plays? But who decides what is exciting or a big play. We didnt stand the whole game and never have! Yeah we stood more than normal in the 3rd quarter but we were excited.

Can someone explain what a big play is or what an exciting play is that I can stand for? Because trust me I do not want to get kicked out again. I just want to be able to stand when excited for my team.

These are the rules for normal, intelligent people when watching football games at Gophers Stadium:

1. If there is nobody behind you that gives a damn - stand for every play if that is what you want to do.

2. If there are old people, children, or people with disabilities behind you - do not stand for any plays.

3. If there are people behind you that don't mind standing for 3rd and 4th downs when the Gophers are on defense and for other important plays during the game - by all means do so.

4. If you want to stand during the game but you are concerned that you might bother the fans sitting behind you - find a place where you can stand without blocking somebody's view of the action. There are numerous places in Gophers Stadium where you can stand and cheer for the Gophers without being a horse's ass to the people behind you.

There it is. In simple terms. Thank You.

Or hey.. those people paid just as much as you to attend the game and they can stand if they want. If you don't like it you can move to the other seats.

I was at a high school football game last weekend where this team was getting demoralized but the students remained standing and kept cheering their classmates on. They were there first, they were standing, and some fat lards that had bad knees were sitting behind them. Long story short they had the freaking police department run them off because they were standing. If you don't want to support the team, then you can move back to the seats where people aren't standing and cheering.

I mean, come on. It's a freaking football game. It's not like you are attending an opera. You want to be a bump on a log, you can be one somewhere else.

I think you must have been sitting in the student section. I have been to a dozen or so games in Iowa City and they do not stand for anywhere near the whole game. They stand for 3rd downs on defense and big plays, much like most intelligent fans do.

Because it would be much better to have a stadium with 200 people (not including students) in it that want to stand for the entire game than with 50,000 people who do not. The U's program would be in so much better shape if those other 49,800 fans would stay home.

most normal schools dont have a special cheer for first downs either. we're just 'special'.

Jesus, how dumb do you have to be to take my post and misconstrue it as me saying people who sit need to stay home? Did I say they needed to stay home? Nope. Try again. Or don't. It'll probably be embarrassing for you if you do.

What did you mean by "somewhere else"? I assumed that if people are not going to be in their seats it would be outside TCF Bank stadium.

What the hell is Gophers Stadium?
