The rumors never end: Tubby a target for LSU job - UPDATED: LSU hires Johnny Jones

Valid concerns, especially with the timing (if Tubby were to leave in short order). Our studs would have plenty of time to start fishing around for other schools. My gut tells me Tubby's not gonna' leave without having accomplished anything of great note here (on the court), but $$$$$$$ (and evidently a practice facility) talks, and especially with a new president and AD, now it seems more feasible that he'd leave.

Agreed somewhat but why does he fan the flames? Why are there never rumors about Bo Ryan leaving? Tubby needs to stop these rumors, he is becoming a joke.

I don't worry as I don't believe a decent job would hire him. He is too old and not successful enough. I tihnk his only chance to get a high profile job would be cleaning up a Clem Haskins style mess. Age wouldn't matter as much as character in that kind of situation.

My only concern is that if Tubby goes, one or both Hollins may go too (not necessarily with him), especially Dre.

This would be my concern also, hopefully the prospect of playing with Rodney and Trevor next year would be enough to keep both of them here.

As far as new recruits I think Ellenson would stay, Buggs might be a question mark, hopefully if it happened the new coach could hit the ground running and try to retain those two and look towards 2013.

Cause Wisconsin is actually respected as a basketball program?

With the guys we have coming back, as the new coach I'd be less concerned about the two incoming recruits and would focus my efforts on keeping the studs on the current roster. Especially so because we figure to have a pretty decent team in 2012-13. At worst if the recruits de-commit (or the new coach encourages them to look elsewhere) that would mean the new coach has a couple more scholarships at his disposal for 2013 and beyond.

Every NBA job has Coach K and Izzo connected to them. Every NFL Job has Saban connected to them. It's good we have someone that others see value in...

People shouldn't blame Tubby. Respect and love is a 2-way street. Tubby is working without a contract extension and the administration is really dragging its feet about it. It wasn't even until a few weeks ago that we even knew for sure there'd be a contract extension. Remember in February when people thought the new AD would run Tubby out of town? So you can't blame Tubby for keeping his options open.

The administration could just as easily put an end to the rumors by announcing plans to build a practice facility and offering Tubby his extension.

Also, who wants Bo Ryan? Only the Badgers could stand that slow down ball. Bo probably couldn't get a single recruit in the SEC with that slow down ball.

Tubby must not have gotten the memo about most coaches not wanting their name to become public when they are looking into other job opportunities.

Why should he stop them? He might be trying to use them as leverage for his contract extension here or he might just want out and has been waiting for the right job or fit for him to come along.

I wish Tubby would just leave and get it over with. Nobody will miss him in MN.

Tubby is just posturing to force Tyus to go to the bathroom or get off the pot. During the press conference to announce Tubby will be our coach until death do us part, Tyus will flash a legally binding verbal committment. After the Rouser is played, scher215 will step forth and cut a check for the new practice facility.

this stance might be a little harsh but the never-ending drama is getting old. I can see his point about wanting a contract extension and wanting a practice facility if that is what it is. If it is just an ego stroke for him to be connected with every job opening, he can do that at his next job.
It is starting to remind me of Favre's last few years in Green Bay and then the subsequent begging him to come back both years here.

He needs to stop them because they are no longer providing him leverage. He has become the boy who cried wolf. Sometimes leaders need to lead and not manoeuvre. Take this team to Sweet 16 next year and he will get more money and better facilities than by flirting with every lousy BCS job.

Rumors about Maryland and Arkansas are on thing. LSU and Auburn are another. They're not better jobs. If he just wants out, for the sake of getting out, fine. He has valid reason to be frustrated that a simple contract extension promised to him 2 years ago still isn't done. But he's probably getting it at this point, so the 'leverage' is over-stated. And the constant rumors are getting really old.

While I have the same shirt as your picture Madtown, wearing it hasn't led to many wins for our squad against the ugly red power in the east.

That said, I'm indifferent if Tubby leaves. He's a good basketball coach, but he's not all that happy here and if he does go, I would say his tenure here was slightly disappointing. What is interesting though is I'm not sure what these other school's see in him...

Why should he stop them?

The ideal reason? He is under contract to coach here next year and I would think that his players believe that he committed to coach them when they signed with the U to play basketball or a couple of them declared they wanted to return.

The real world reason? At some point this becomes counter-productive. It probably makes it more difficult to recruit and it definitely costs you a lot of fan support for the the program when they see this. Don't know if we're at that point yet, but getting there. I also doubt this really serves to get his extension or facility. This has been happening the past several years, and it hasn't accomplished anything other than maybe make Tubby feel wanted.

Certainly don't want this to happen, but, if it does, life goes on.

I find it interesting that the link posted earlier in this thread shows both the men's and women's basketball program in attendance and neither of the coaches are around a year later.

OMG, all my Tubby bashing has finally coming back to haunt me. For all the stupid things I said about you, Tubby, will you forgive me this one time?

No.

I don't know but I doubt you have to worry about LSU hiring Tubby.

“@RandBall: RT @RandyRosetta: One key source told me that Tubby Smith has ended talks with #LSU and is working on a contract extension with Minnesota.”

I love the idea that a guy who has won 1/3 of his conference games the past two seasons and has NEVER even finished above .500 in the conference is somehow deserving of an extension. If the LSU thing is real (and I doubt it is, Tubby is going to go to a school who just had its coach leave for SMU...LOL), the Gophers won't be in a bad shape at all.

If Tubby wanted actual leverage, he should try actually winning games...especially at home.

Certainly good reasons but you know this isn't how this stuff works. Coaches changed jobs all the time and of course it happens that a kid chooses to go to a school because of the coach but in the end picking a a school based on a coach is probably not the best reason because that coach just might be moving on before too long.
