Getting blown out was the final nail imo. I really, really hate the NIT. This team looks like one that will go through the motions and exit the NIT fast.

The NIT is a funny deal- you never know how a team will react. I remember a certain Gopher squad getting pounded by Tulane and thinking how far off we were from being any good and then there we were the next year in the Final Four with nearly the same group of guys- but much improved. If we go NIT I hope we see a lot of Buggs and McNeil while winning some games.

Just heard Dan Gavitt on with the CBS guys between B1G games.

Biggest reason for optimism: Gavitt mentioned how close things were between so many teams that were under consideration this year compared to last year.

Biggest reason for pessimism: Gavitt mentioned that the conference tournaments might hold a little more weight this year because of how close these teams were with just one more game against a top 50 or one more game against a top 100 could make the difference.

I didn't come out of the interview feeling more positive or negative about the Gophers chances, but I do wish the Gophers didn't play one of their 2-3 worst games of the seasons with the committee watching.

BGA1, I remember that 96 NIT game to and I had quite a different reaction. That teams was pissed about missing the NCAA's and came out and pounded Saint Louis in round 1 and then simply decided they'd sent their message. They were a perfect example of a team that simply came out and didn't care in that game against Tulane. It happens a lot in the NIT which makes it difficult to really judge a team's progress.

I feel about the same about that interview. He openly admitted how much they're discussing the Kansas injury. I don't buy the idea they will consider it for seeding but not for who makes it. What's the difference? You're essentially deciding the same thing, who gets a #12 and who's out. For that I feel slightly optimistic that BYU may be out, and slightly optimistic that Dre's injury could help us as they split hairs.

I think the quick exits tend to happen when you have seniors who check out. Austin doesn't strike me as that type and neither does Mav or Malik if they matter. Then again Ralph didn't even play in 2012 and we still made the finals.

Yes, that could be the biggest advantage of going there. Right now the Gophers are projected to get a #1 seed in that tournament by one source (NIT Bracket Project). That would give them up to 3 games at home. In addition, because of the automatic qualifier rule where regular season conference winners are guaranteed a slot if they lose in their conference tournament, a few lowly ranked teams from very weak conferences get into that tournament each year as 8th seeds. That would be the perfect opportunity to play Buggs and McNeil for extended minutes.

Right now, there are 11 automatic qualifiers (could be one or two more): Belmont, Boston University, Davidson, Florida Gulf Coast, High Point, Iona, Robert Morris, UC Irvine, Utah Valley, Vermont, and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Some of those (e.g., Belmont, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Iona, Vermont) are pretty competitive teams capable of knocking off a power conference also ran, but I don't think Minnesota should have much trouble with a High Point.

Looks like it is the NIT. Sparty is clobbering the Skunks, RPI is on the wrong side of borderline, and an overall losing record in RPI top 150 keep us out.

Disregard, thought you were talking about NCAA AQs.
