The Portal and the xDSU’s

I certainly look at offer lists when we pickup guys, but I'm a fan and I do not know these players.

But I'm pretty sure the coaches on most teams DO NOT CARE where the player is from. It's all:

1. Is he a good prospect?

2. Can we get him?

If it turns out we don't take any form some schools, doesn't matter.

I think we’re headed toward an era of college football where 3*s don’t ever go to ANY P4 school right out of high-school. They will have to record stats in a G6/FCS school to get a roster spot.

That's a very good point, but I think maybe exaggerated a bit. When you're bringing in portal guys, that would seem to reduce the number of 3*s you need to "settle for". Those guys go to lower programs and portal up if they prove they are worth it. I just don't think there are enough 4*s available to fill a recruiting class especially at a place like Minnesota. We will see!

Hate to say it ... but would an NDSU player who is good enough to portal up to the Big Ten ... choose to come to Minnesota?

My guess is they would say something like "... then why didn't you recruit me in the first place?"
Nor did Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska or Iowa St.

A lot of the xDSU talent comes from Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska. The guys that have left these schools haven't been loyal to our headed towards their home states when they've left.

We need to upgrade talent, not stay even. Getting kids looking for playing time from Georgia and Alabama seems like a much better idea.
I'd be interested in seeing the recruiting template for the Gophers. How do we sell the Gophers program to recruits? How to we respond to objections to being UM students? How to we keep improving the pitch?

Anyone else surprised we haven’t been able to bring in any talent from NDSU or SDSU? While our region doesn’t produce a lot of p4 talent, it does produce the pipeline for the best of FCS. NDSU’s last 4 LT’s have been drafted, and are either still in the NFL, or had decent careers. 3 played HS in Minnesota, 1
in SD. NDSU’s current LT is a RS SO from Spring Lake Park.
I would guess many of the players at NDSU/SDSU were ignored by UMN

The same way Phillip Daniels was ignored by Ohio State. Yet he went home for what we all can guess was more money.
I don't disagree on $$ being a factor, but probably not the only factor. I imagine a kid like Daniels was hoping all along to go to tOSU. They may not have been sure he was ready and didn't want to commit a roster spot for a Fr development prospect. Once he showed he could play at P4/B10 level, and fill a needed spot immediately OSU became interested and Daniels jumped at the chance.

Exactly, so how would that be different from a Minnesota kid going to a FCS school, playing well, and getting paid more to leave and go the U?

Feel like this loss is as big as Buck"o" Irving. Wonder how this Offensive Line would have been better with Daniels starting and would have helped running game.

I think the changes with transfer era, i turns into a need for better roster management. We can't afford to go Portal shopping every year. Eventually we will wind up following the Ben Johnson annual dumpster dive to fill a roster. No longer can you commit 25% of the roster to RS guys who can't contribute until 1-2 years down the road (or just leave). No longer can you just cast a net and bring in 25+ bodies every year and hope they can play at some point down the road. Roster management will, be crucial for EVERY position. show each player their path to playing time to keep them engaged/retained. As an example roster (mis)management, if you listen to GGR and Ryan Burns, he lays it pretty simple how our OL issues are related to very poor OL recruiting for several years in a row and bad choices in the transfer portal this year.

I’m a Gopher fan, unlike alot of the fatalistic people on here I’m trying to think of the few advantages our program has. We can offer BiG Ten rev share money that NDSU can’t. Those programs have no say if they are feeder programs, much like we had no say on being a feeder program for Bucky to Oregon. Texas Tech has a starting safety from NDSU. Miami, MIAMI!! the RB factory! Their second string RB is from NDSU.
Is there anyone from the DSU that we went hard after in the portal? Can't think of anyone we actually landed

Until last winter, SDSU had been very resilient against the portal, and nearly all those guys went to Wazzu. NDSU has not had a ton of portal transfers, either.
