The New Recruits

I'm not overly concerned. I believe Niko knows who he wants to keep around. Looks like Grove Asuma Jefferson Shinholster and 11 new faces. Totally fine with that.

Same here. I still think they get Kyan Evans (apparently has some Minnesota family members). Wouldn't surprise me to see Jojo McIver flip to us. Kyle Jorgensen will most likely come on over too.

If Niko lands even two of the three, that greatly exceeds my expectation. Those guys signed up to play for Ben and are all from out of state.
Dynamic of Thorson will be interesting. He's been recruiting these guys and been here four years. Niko and the assistants he's bringing are the connection to any CSU transfers, but they also are keeping their guy as the new HC.

We are going to learn how big of a name Niko is in the recruiting world quickly in the portal. However, he doesn't come across as one to cut corners and will find guys that fit. That is the critical part. Find the guys that fit and if they compete and win, they likely stay in the new world of revenue sharing.

Seeing McCollum come in and compete with guys from D2 shows how much fit matters to a system.

I've said it before, but... This guy will be key. I might be wrong, but I see him as someone who can contribute as a frosh.
Unless we pull a star out of the portal, he will need to. I haven’t followed him at all so have no idea other than he seems to have exceeded expectations since his commitment.

The aftereffects of the Coyle-Johnson affair are still being felt as the divorce always affects the kids the hardest.

As you and I have discussed, 247 has him as a 3-star. But he's a very promising 3-star, I think.
He may indeed be a very promising 3-star.

But he's a 3 star everywhere (on3, rivals, 247) except ESPN. And as we all know, ESPN is worthless when it comes to recruit rankings.

So why does Marcus undermine his own credibility by referring to Jefferson as a "4 star?"

Somehow he got it in his head. Did Jefferson get downgraded at some point?

He already made the recruiting class sound like the Fab 5 as part of his "Save Ben" push. Can't go back now.

Ummmm he’s Marcus

Niko's doing work. This ain't no easy feat. Clem has spoken about how tough it was to keep Dutcher's holdovers (Burton, Newbern, Shik).
Slightly different circumstances but point well taken. A brand new sell job on kids you don’t know. Clems tenure would have been a lot different without Willie, Shik, and Newbern sticking to their commitments. If he has success here, maybe we reopen the LA pipeline clogged up by Henley the 7-4 guy.

Honestly, why does it matter this much. It was a reporter independent of the program that said this.

Has Shinholster confirmed his commitment? A close source has advised he will be doing so.

The whole "star" racket is a bit of a farse. There are some differences in 5's and 3's. 3's and 4's. It gets blurry in a hurry.

It is all based on offers, not someone actually assessing their talent. Schools do not have the budget or manpower to go and watch every single player out there. The big names - absolutely. Everyone else - not so much.

The way it was explained to me is if a player has even one D1 offer, they are automatically a 3 star. As they get more offers, the stars increase. I don't know if the school offering factors into the models, but it might. The assumption is that if more people are interested, that player must be better than another player with less offers. Well, maybe, maybe not, because.....

...... an entire industry has cropped up around propping up an athlete's "star" power by promoting the athlete to get more offers, thereby raising their stock price.

Personally I don't put a lot of stock in splitting hairs between 3's and 4's. What I think is most entertaining is they take this completely subjective nonsensical score and calculate it to 4 decimal places to make it look more legit. Clever.

Having said that, he is a consensus three, and Marcus is being a rube.
