The deal is near finalized for #UCLA football to play its home games in SoFi Stadium.

I’m glad we played at UCLA when we did.

I have little interest in a road trip to UCLA to go to so fi. Granted locals may think otherwise.

Neither stadium is anywhere near the campus. SoFi is shiny and new and will be a better environment for UCLA.

That said, it completely lacks any draw or tie to college football. But yhen again, the Rose Bowl on January first is an amazing experience.

The Rose Bowl at any other time, is a dump.

Has a great famers market in the tailgate/parking lots!

The city of Pasadena has a lease with UCLA through 2044, so there will be a legal fight over this, so I think we may have another chance at a game at the Rose Bowl, in addition to us playing in the Rose Bowl game sometime soon.

Yea who would want to watch college football outside in that climate.

It's LA, if they are good the fans will be there (see USC).

Had tickets to go last year, but had to cancel last minute. Bummed my only Rose Bowl experience was Wisconsin v Stanford in Y2K. My parents refused to leave me home alone over New Years (good call).

I disagree with your assessment of the Rose Bowl. For an afternoon game at any time of year, I think it's a fabulous setting with San Gabriel Mountains in the backdrop.

It is quite a hassle to exit from, but that's not unique.

This would really suck. I get why it's tough to make an on campus stadium work in Westwood but I wish they at least tried.

There's no way the residents of that area are going to allow a stadium there with the associated traffic etc.

The view is spectacular, yes.

I had no idea that UCLA has never had an on-campus stadium. I just figured they gave it up a long time ago and moved to swanky LA Coliseum, and then eventually the Rose Bowl.
Campus to the Coliseum doesn't seem too bad, but that trip to the Rose Bowl has got to suck. SoFi would be much closer for them, so maybe a better arrangement.
Either way, I don't give a rat's ass.

And the land prices would be insane.

The footprint for their existing track & field stadium (10,000) was actually originally supposed to be for a 40,000+ football stadium in the 1960s, so I do not think land would be an obstacle that they would not be able to overcome if they really wanted to.

That was nixed back then due to local residents being against it though, and I am sure nothing has changed.

It's been close to 100 years since UCLA football was on campus.

  • 12 Miles closer to Campus in LA is a big deal
  • Smaller stadium
  • New Stadium with better seating and amenities
  • Easier to section off for games to close sections
  • Economic impact around the stadium better as well
Seems like a no brainer

Yeah, I think it is their best option...get the benefit of all the great amenities, parking right at the venue.

We went from on campus to the Humpty Dump. Leaving campus was the biggest mistake.
Not that it ever would've been equal to or better than an on-campus stadium, but I wonder how successful an experiment ours would've been had the Gophers moved to a stadium at the level of SoFi or US Bank and not the plastic sterility of the Dome (and yes, I know those stadiums didn't exist 43 years ago...but what if they did? Would the experience have been better? More tolerable?). HBS was a beautiful answer to bringing football back to campus that I wish we had when I was in school.

Experience would have been better, IMHO. If it were to be done now, I think it would be pretty successful with the ease of light rail to get students to and from campus. "Rebranding" it would be way easier with all the technology we have in these new NFL stadiums. Having said that, I would not trade HB Stadium for USB stadium, period. U did fantastic job with that facility.

Sid Heartman wanted the Vikings to build a stadium at the State Fair grandstand location and share it with the Gophers.

It ..... wasn't his worst idea.

The Rose Bowl Operating Committee would be wise to move the Rose Bowl game to SoFi as well. Every time they play the game at the Rose Bowl Stadium they're leaving way too much money on the table.

Is So-Fi likely to give them a much better deal?

Every time I see these kinda facility rental numbers leak out, they're not that good ...

Fair point. I wonder if the stature of that that specific bowl game and the fact that it only happens once a year would be enough for both parties to get together and make a shit ton of money.

But then again I've read that the Rose Bowl Operating Committee has had talks about getting out of the CFP all together unless they can get a game on Jan 1 each season.

Fine by me, I'd love to go back, good bowl game location!

That really wasn't a terrible idea at all. I thought before they built that new arena, that St. Thomas should have paid to renovate the State Fair coliseum for Hockey.
