2.5 million(yeah I know there are more parts)
spread out over 5 years = 500 K per year(not sure if or how much central admn charges for interest)

Drop in attendance because of present state:
$35 per seat X 19 games = $685

1 year loss of 1,000 tiks per game = $685,000(doesn't include preferred seating and concession revenue)

Attendance has already dropped the last couple of years I believe and my figures may be a little off, but you get the idea.

Regardless of who the coach is next year, ticket sales will be down.

Teague should not make this decision based on the buyout. The money will come from somewhere and we'll forget about it. This program may be approaching the level it was when Tubby was hired if Tubby stays another year. I cringe to think about what our 2014 class could possibly be and what it most likely will be.

Agreed. Doesn't the Athletics Department have about a $70M budget?

19...even if your figures are off the thought process is there. Woody has some tough decisions to make in the next 60-90 days. Quite frankly I would like to see both of them hit the exit sign.

By both do you mean Teague? If so seems like a short leash.

I think the tough decisions have to come more in the next 30-60 days.

If they are still paying off the Monson & Mason loans, then it is probably a 10 year amortization. That changes the figure to about 250K per year.

There is no doubt that there is a cost associated with keeping the current staff. The numbers station19 laid out above are notable, as is the potential impact on fundraising. Teague has been hyping this Master Facilities Plan since he got here. The timetable we've been given is mid-April. I can't imagine he wants to go to that press conference and have to answer questions about a disenfranchised fan base. It will be a lot easier to raise significant funds if we make a deep NCAA Tournament run and the fan base is energized, or if a new staff is in place that the fan base and media are rallying around. You only get one first crack at a fundraising bump after the initial Plan is announced.

No way is this dragging on 30-60 days. One would hope that Teague will know coming out of the end of the season (however that finishes, first weekend NCAA Tourney exit, NIT, etc.) what his intentions are. The Firing Season will begin this week as teams bow out of conference tournaments. Major conference teams will be looking for new bosses and if Teague thinks we're going to join that party, he won't want to be the last one in. Not to mention the impact on recruiting. One way or another, I think we'll know the fate of the programs leadership within one week of our season ending. Here's hoping Tubby makes it easy on everyone and rally's the program into a deep March run.

Go Gophers!!

I would agree. However, if we make the tourney and lose our first game.. I think we will know the partial fate of the program (parting ways with Smith) but would be shocked if a replacement is hired. For fundraising, we need to know WHO is coaching the team. And my guess is if Smith is let go after the first NCAA game (I think if he makes a run to S16, he stays with staff changes), the replacement will be either Flip or someone likely still coaching in the tournament...so I think any NEW coach will not be announced until after the final four (or just before). This still meats the mid April timeline.

I will add that Mr. Teague will be a guest speaker at my rotary group and originally booked for the morning of 4/11..his staff later called and requested a mid May date... something about, "mid April looking pretty busy right now". :)

Agree with everything except the deep tourney run. I really believe it has become so bad that a deep tournament run will not energize the fan base.

It's time to move on, PERIOD.

Bassy, the Tubby and Borton comment is probably correct.

Agreed with ALL of this. If a decision is made, it will be made quite quickly after the season ends.

If we make the S16 or better, a HUGE if (but see Indy game for the "just when you think we are dead, we rise up" scenario)... thats all national spotlight stuff. The Sweet 16 is a big thing, would be only the 4th S16 run or better for the Gophers since I learned to ride a bike. How in the world does a team fire its coach after that? Honest question.

I agree with this. If MN makes the round of 16, there is no way Tubs gets the heave-ho, IMO...

"You ain't cuttin it. We're going in a different direction."

I know what you're saying though. That's why I'm hoping.........

I would think the only way we could do that is if its mutual and Tubby retires.. The PR would be bad.. and Flip our only choice (not that its a bad thing). I just don't see it. If we make the S16, I think its Tubby's choice... either make a couple staff tweaks and stay or retire. Staff tweaks could be good as Teague and Ellis know all the great up and coming potential staff hires.

I'm pretty much of the mindset that S16 or greater, Tubby will likely be back. Anything less and we have a new coach.

I agree you couldn't fire him after a S16 run, but I would recommend Teague/ Ellis talk to Tubby about bringing in a coach in-waiting...but I'm not convince a coach in-waiting really works except in select circumstances.

Sounds like S16 is the tipping point. Personally I will take a new coach over a S16 run.

Tubby is not a poor coach, he is a terrible coach.

I would take a sweet sixteen run and a coaching change.

The goal should be to do what gives the program the best chance for future success.
It's hard to argue that a coaching change isn't what is best for the future of this program.

I hear what you are saying.. However, if we did make the S16, it would imply a couple more great wins this year..and its kind of hard to say he is terrible, yet he made the S16 with the number of big wins he had. Would he be great, no, but terrible? Terrible coaches don't win that many big games.. that said, we have not gotten the to S16 yet, so you may get your wish :)

It sounds terrible to wish to lose, but I do get where people are coming from. Even if we reach the S16 it's hard to imagine an upward trajectory going forward with Smith, I think we currently have a coach past his prime which will only result in lost recruits and potential future attrition.

Then why recommend it?

I'll say it. I hope we lose our next two games. I WANT A NEW COACH.

Tubby will only continue to run the program further into the ground.

Then why recommend it?

It's such a tight spot, obviously I like their record and ability to find assistants who become successful head coaches. My preference is to start fresh with a new HC and staff next year but a S16 run kills that.

If you make a Sweet 16 run and fire the coach it is almost a Glen Mason situation. I've been a Tubby supporter, especially through the early complaining about him. But the blowouts down the stretch have changed my mind. This team has regressed and it is not just the schedule. Getting blown out by Iowa, Purdue and Ohio St are not excusable when you don't compete. Recruit some shooters!!!!! Everyone else has kids who can shoot except us. It doesn't matter if you have the greatest offense in the world...if you can't shoot, you can't score. All this said, it wouldn't surprise me if we beat Illinios, played Indiana tough and made it to the second week of the tournament.

Not disagreeing with your statements.. however I will on one point. Mason never made the equivalent of the S16 (new years day bowl). The S16 is a big thing... again, we have only been 3 times in past 25 plus years.

This is the area where Tubby gets a little Brewsterish, brining in athletes that don't come together as a team. This state has shooters that end up going to lesser schools, it wouldn't hurt to grab a couple from time to time. He's gone to the athlete scrap heap to fill out this roster far too many times, the fundamentals are killing this team.
