The Case for Niko (aka Niko’s Case)

This WVU article lists Niko Medved as the first candidate they should consider to replace DeVries. Apparently his wife is from Morgantown.
Oh my God what a choice. This could be a divorce-maker lol. His hometown vs. her hometown. Oh my goodness.

Just found a bigger problem. Her dad is Mark Nesselroad, this guy:

Her family has roots in WV from before there was a WV.

This could be a big problem.
Not downplaying the family ties thing on his wife's side but how often has a coach gotten up at his introductory press conference and said he took the job because it was his wife's dream job? :)

Whatever happens happens. Hell, in spite of all the speculation we have no clue if Medved is even interested in coming here. I mean he probably is but nothing is certain until contracts are signed.

The one thing that makes me think the Medved thing is going to happen though is that we aren't really hearing any other names getting tossed around for our job.

Goodness let's come off the ledge. Maybe his in-laws have been lighting their couches on fire for decades. But we stole West Virginia's women's coach after one season for a reason. Indiana stole their men's coach after one season and Michigan once stole all their coaches for a reason. When John Denver sings about country roads he's actually talking about western Virginia not West Virginia for a reason.

West Virginia is a weird place and the school now very out of place in a conference centered around Texas, Kansas, Arizona and Utah. If Niko was campaigning for the MN job and made a handshake deal as has been reported I don't think he's going to bail for that job. Especially if they just passed on him a year ago.

...and John Beilein left there for the Big Ten for a reason.

It was my understanding that Thorson's specialty was offense? All his coaching videos from back in the day are offensive development. I don't recall DeLaSalle overwhelming people with their defense? They just had more offensive firepower than the people they played.
Just my take.
Haha I can tell it is just your take, as I can tell you never watched any DLS teams under Thorson.

They were 100% know for the intense pressure man to man defense under him.

Given your status as one of the top cynics on this board, your confidence is bordering on delightful and encouraging. 😂 I’m still in the show me the verified evidence category, but I do hope you’re right. The analysis is good. Despite our flaws, Minnesota is a better place to live and with WVU odd duck status in the Big 12, it doesn’t take a savant to conclude this is a better job. I’m still holding my breath, however. Rationality doesn’t always win out on these matters.

Very astute observation on the John Denver song. Doesn't matter anymore but you're right.

I don't know how this is going to end up but I don't think conference geography is going to matter. All of the conferences are pretty much all over the place now. Big 12 might be slightly more compact than the coast to coast big 10.

WV is a weird place I know a lot about, and that's part of why I'm concerned. Family is a big damn deal there. And their family in particular is a big damn deal there. Not the biggest, but pretty big. And coach's wives have a lot of family responsibilities.

If he does go there, the king move would be to hire Huggins. WV still loves him and a lot of people wish he was still the coach.

In general with guys coming from mid-level and lower jobs, I think it's interesting to try to at least guess at how well-resourced they are *relative to the rest of their league*. For example, I see all the time in the rumor mill about Ryan Odom (and guys who've come from VCU in the past) that the job is extremely well-resourced compared to the rest of the A-10.

In the Mountain West I don't know much about how the hierarchy shakes out, other than I would guess SDSU is one of the better, if not the best, resourced, and San Jose State and Air Force are almost certainly at the bottom. So how CSU fits in compared to New Mexico, Boise, Utah State, UNLV, etc. when it comes to resources, I don't know, but I'd be interested to try to learn.

Having said that, I'd be shocked if CSU spent as much on their roster as Memphis did on theirs.

Going back to when his Drake team visited the Barn a number of years ago, the beauty and effectiveness of his offense was unmistakable. I remarked that night how he's an uncommon coach.
My memory is failing but I don’t remember that. What I remember is being ticked off that the game was so close. Barely beat Drake that night as I recall.

It was close indeed
