The Axe

Just in case someone doesn't know:
The rivalry's first trophy was the "Slab of Bacon", in use from 1930 to 1943. It was "lost" after the 1943 game, but was found in a storage closet in the 1990's.
The Paul Bunyan Axe was created by the Wisconsin letterwinners' organization (the National W Club) and would be instituted as the trophy in the series in 1948. The scores of each game are recorded on the axe's handle, which is 6 feet long. A new axe was created in 2000. The original axe was donated to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.[11]

The story goes that the Slab of Bacon was delivered to the Gophers locker room after Minnesota win the 1943 game but the coach refused to accept it, claiming that the trophy was frivolous during a time of war. Wisconsin claimed to have lost it, but it had been updated with the scores until 1970, so it wasn't actually lost till then.

I think the Slab should be put in the College Football Hall of Fame. Perhaps some brave soul might liberate it from the Badgers' offices...

Or how about putting both trophies on the line this time, since the game is so big? We bring the Axe, they bring the Slab. Double or Nothing.

Paul Bunyan was a man, yes a big man. Stood 6'4", weighed 245, kinda broad at shoulders, narrow at the hips... And everyone knew you didn't give no lip to Big Paul.
