I could be wrong, but I'd tend to think not being eligible to play would trigger the "force majeure" part of the contract.

Would love to see that court battle get played out, and for Campbell to get absolutely dragged through the mud for trying to rip away the money he promised this young man because it turns out the young man has an addiction problem.

And Sorsby won't play, which is the correct decision for betting on your own team. End of story

I don't consider myself an alcoholic although I drank fairly heavily in my 20s and quit drinking in 1984. It was just getting in the way and I found it easier not to drink at all instead of meting it out. I would classify myself as a problem drinker whose problem was getting bigger and may have led to me becoming an alcoholic. I didn't go to treatment nor did I join AA but I can see in retrospect that I should have at least seen someone about my next steps.

I only say this as what might be an apt comparison to Sorsby situation. He obviously gets the dopamine rush from the betting and with all the avenues for betting available, he can bet on about anything around the clock (and unlike a drinker, he doesn't have to risk driving). I think going to treatment is more about him recognizing his betting "triggers" and finding ways to address them without going into a betting spiral. Part of his going into a treatment program may be PR-related, but even though the pro leagues have warmed to betting, they might need some assurance that Sorsby isn't going to run up a huge gambling debt that could put him in a compromising position. The challenge for him is going to be finding a comfortable spot that at least cuts down the betting, but as I found out with my drinking, meting it out is a bigger challenge that simply walking away from the activity.

I don't think Sorsby's football career overall should be scuttled.

And it won't.

He will get drafted in the supplemental draft.


But he's done in college, as he should be.

I'm just glad that one of the main public proponents of turning major college football into the grotesque setup of the English Premier League -- ie. unlimited, no-cap spending where only the richest teams that can spend the most money get to have a legit chance at a championship -- got his hand cut off in the cookie jar. Good!

Agree. I think going to inpatient treatment is a positive step for him both personally and PR-wise. I think unless this is a total Pete Rose situation (which from what has been reported thus far it does not appear to be) he can provide assurances that this is under control. He'll be on a figurative leash of sorts (but the same goes for other behaviors that violate NFL standards), but if he steps up I think he'll get his shot.

I believe teams have to forfeit their pick in the same round as the round they select someone in the supplemental draft, so usually teams want to hang onto their Day 1 and Day 2 picks. Might be different with Sorsby.

So I went and looked it up, there are actually a few picks that went in round 1 (Bernie Kosar and Brian Bosworth the most popular names), Terrelle Pryor went in the 3rd in 2011 and someone from Western Michigan went in the 3rd in 2018.

The problem for Sorsby might be the talent in the next draft. I think there's like 6 projected first rounders next year at QB, so why take him now and lose that round's pick next year when you might be in line to get Manning, Moore, etc. in the first round? Is he anything more special that players like Dillon Gabriel that you can almost always find in rounds 3-7?

Him having no baggage would help A LOT. (And no, I'm not counting an addiction as baggage, I'm counting betting on your own team and not paying back the NIL to Cincy even though you got a new NIL deal.)

Perhaps not baggage but has to be called something in my opinion. Not paying back, betting on your own team knowing that is wrong is something to be concerned about. Rules don't apply to him? Selfish? Thinks he can get away with anything? I'm not so sure if I'd trust him. Don't know of other examples where people screwed up in college and turned out to be a good person in the NFL with this sort of background. Remember, addictive gambling is a disease not to be easily overcome.
