Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.

I could be wrong, but I'd tend to think not being eligible to play would trigger the "force majeure" part of the contract.
Would love to see that court battle get played out, and for Campbell to get absolutely dragged through the mud for trying to rip away the money he promised this young man because it turns out the young man has an addiction problem.

Yeah, that'll play.

And Sorsby won't play, which is the correct decision for betting on your own team. End of story

I don't consider myself an alcoholic although I drank fairly heavily in my 20s and quit drinking in 1984. It was just getting in the way and I found it easier not to drink at all instead of meting it out. I would classify myself as a problem drinker whose problem was getting bigger and may have led to me becoming an alcoholic. I didn't go to treatment nor did I join AA but I can see in retrospect that I should have at least seen someone about my next steps.

I only say this as what might be an apt comparison to Sorsby situation. He obviously gets the dopamine rush from the betting and with all the avenues for betting available, he can bet on about anything around the clock (and unlike a drinker, he doesn't have to risk driving). I think going to treatment is more about him recognizing his betting "triggers" and finding ways to address them without going into a betting spiral. Part of his going into a treatment program may be PR-related, but even though the pro leagues have warmed to betting, they might need some assurance that Sorsby isn't going to run up a huge gambling debt that could put him in a compromising position. The challenge for him is going to be finding a comfortable spot that at least cuts down the betting, but as I found out with my drinking, meting it out is a bigger challenge that simply walking away from the activity.
I don't think Sorsby's football career overall should be scuttled.

And it won't.

He will get drafted in the supplemental draft.

But he's done in college, as he should be.

I'm just glad that one of the main public proponents of turning major college football into the grotesque setup of the English Premier League -- ie. unlimited, no-cap spending where only the richest teams that can spend the most money get to have a legit chance at a championship -- got his hand cut off in the cookie jar. Good!

The EPL model is gross.

The NFL model is correct.

Agree. I think going to inpatient treatment is a positive step for him both personally and PR-wise. I think unless this is a total Pete Rose situation (which from what has been reported thus far it does not appear to be) he can provide assurances that this is under control. He'll be on a figurative leash of sorts (but the same goes for other behaviors that violate NFL standards), but if he steps up I think he'll get his shot.

Supplemental draft here we come! I don't know who the most accomplished player to come out of the supplemental draft process is, but Cris Carter has to rank near the top if not at the top. I believe teams have to forfeit their pick in the same round as the round they select someone in the supplemental draft, so usually teams want to hang onto their Day 1 and Day 2 picks. Might be different with Sorsby.

So I went and looked it up, there are actually a few picks that went in round 1 (Bernie Kosar and Brian Bosworth the most popular names), Terrelle Pryor went in the 3rd in 2011 and someone from Western Michigan went in the 3rd in 2018.

The problem for Sorsby might be the talent in the next draft. I think there's like 6 projected first rounders next year at QB, so why take him now and lose that round's pick next year when you might be in line to get Manning, Moore, etc. in the first round? Is he anything more special that players like Dillon Gabriel that you can almost always find in rounds 3-7?

Him having no baggage would help A LOT. (And no, I'm not counting an addiction as baggage, I'm counting betting on your own team and not paying back the NIL to Cincy even though you got a new NIL deal.)

Forgot about Kosar and Bosworth. I can't remember why they entered the supplemental draft.

One of the issues for teams is they don't know what their draft slot will be in the 2027 draft.

Perhaps not baggage but has to be called something in my opinion. Not paying back, betting on your own team knowing that is wrong is something to be concerned about. Rules don't apply to him? Selfish? Thinks he can get away with anything? I'm not so sure if I'd trust him. Don't know of other examples where people screwed up in college and turned out to be a good person in the NFL with this sort of background. Remember, addictive gambling is a disease not to be easily overcome.

Yeah there’s no way in hell you can reinstate this kid. Him going to the NFL will also be an interesting one on if they say something if tries to enter the supplemental draft

He still has his lawsuit, but it's a moot point if he chooses to enter the NFL supplemental draft. Will be a big gamble if he thinks he can beat them in court and still play for Tech this year.

Think really the only question for him is if he thinks anyone would take him in the NFL draft right now with the PR issue that would become.

Oh, I think he’s got more that just that one question

Guy has more problems than a math book

Looks like he got a temporary injunction that makes him eligible to play....

The NCAA has plenty of problems but how the hell will there ever be any sort of stability if everytime they try to enforce anything they just get sued and the player finds a football fan judge willing to let them play?

Yeah this is ridiculous. Everyone should just immediately forfeit their game against texas tech and just have the committee not count those losses and not consider TT for the playoffs.

If the NCAA can't do anything, then it's up to the teams and playoff commission to stop this crap. Just let TT know now that they won't have a season if he's on their team.

My Saturdays might be opening up a bit more in the fall if BS like this will continue to happen. What a shit show.
Trust me, it's a great idea. I used to watch from Gameday until around midnight. Now I only care about Gopher games. So much more gets done on Saturdays now.

Yep, I will always follow the Gophers and watch our games but outside of that it’s just something to have on in the background.

Such a shame to see the way everything that used to make college athletics great is being stripped away and replaced with complete stupidity.

There is no way Sorsby should be able to ever play college football again. And yet here we are.

so lets say he plays, they win the NC, and then the NCAA finds him ineligible in their repeat litigation. do they have to forfeit the NC and all the money that comes with making the CFP

Yep, I'll always remember the odd scheduling quirks and things like that that made it unique. It's like going from a hand-made patty from a ma ' pa place to McDonalds.

How come the NCAA can't apply for an injunction regarding the irreparable harm letting gamblers play would cause?

I'd like the playoff selection committee to come out right now and say, "under no circumstances will any team that has Sorsby on their roster be invited to the playoff, regardless of their regular season performance."

No judge can force a team to be selected to the playoffs, right?

Michael Kosta does a bit on the Daily show where he says Right 3 times and it becomes less certain and more of a question each time he says it.....I kind of feel like that fits pretty much any NCAA situation right now. It feels obvious to say guys who have been drafted by the NBA can't play college ball anymore and it feels obvious that someone who bet on college football shouldn't be playing college football anymore but that is obviously not the world we live in....
