Teague WILL Make His Mark Here - Especially Basketball - Both Programs

You don't get it. When Wisky or AZ turned it around I am sure they weren't EXPECTING it. They were pleased. But they could not have expected it! If someone lifts our programs out of where they are, I will be pleased. If we win conf. championships, I will start to expect them. It is not that hard to grasp.

No, you don't get it. Wisconsin had a plan in place when they made their hires in the 1990s. I don't know about Arizona, but I would assume by going hard after an established coach like Olsen (with established midwestern roots), they did as well

Also, if you want to argue that the adminstration here hasn't had a commitment to winning and providing the necessary resources (see BB practice facility), then I would agree with you wholeheartedly. History is more likely to repeat itself with the status quo in place.

How is that double talk? I don't have to have a "vision", I'm not getting paid nor am I responsible for anything related to Gopher Athletics.

Sure act like a know it all about all things. Key word is act.

Let's see; if we had let Maturi retire in the normal fashion we save 450 k? If we don't buy off UNC we save 800 k? Those two combined would cut the Tubby buy-out in half. Oh well, what's money.

I read people pointing to the $800,000 for the UNC buyout.

BUT, I don't read anyone acknowledging that the REAL cost of that buyout is realistically more like $400,000. I can't remember all the reasons I read why the REAL cost is only half, but I'm sure you remember what I'm talking about.

Also, how much money is there to gain if an extra win gets us to a bowl game where we otherwise might not have?! Now I'm not making the argument that we would have lost to UNC. But I am sure the thought of future GAINS were weighed when considering how much was LOST.

And people are talking about Arizona as if they had ALWAYS sucked before Lute went there?!

Seriously?!

Arizona had a VERY GOOD BB HISTORY for a very long time way back in the day. FORMER GOPHER FRED ENKE led the Wildcats to some really good seasons. They weren't so renown nationally, but when did they even become a state?! lol But regionally, they were a bb power for many decades under Enke and the coach he took over for.

So they may have been in a slump when Lute went down there, but Zona fans were nothing like Wisconsin, their fans expected big things, because they had gotten used to success.

I believe Enke led Zona to something like a 60 game home winning streak or something like that?!

They had 3 NCAA appearances before Olsen got there (one of which was in 1950) and were 4-24 in the year before he was hired. Not the same as Wisconsin, but definitely not a "historical" program

Coaching is nearly everything. Get the right guy and we will excel. For the love of humanity, Gonzaga is a national power, and it can't be done here?. Butler and VCU, Utah during Majerus and post Majerus, Oklahoma with and without Tubbs, UMASS and Memphis without Cal, Kentucky with him. Illinois with and without Self, Wisconsin pre-2003, the examples are countless. Facilities will help, for sure. With out the right guy it won't matter.

Get the right guy in the right situation and you can excel. The right guy for our situation is out there, he is currently not here.

I'd read people saying it would be less because we would pick up an extra home game, but instead of that happening we're traveling to New Mexico State.

And if the team makes a bowl game because they got win #6 against NMSU the athletic department is almost certain to lose money on the bowl game.

Define very good....

Check the threads after the B1G opener against Michigan State. Some expect Tubby to make the sweet 16 in order to keep his job. This has been pasted all over Gopherhole. So if Tubby doesn't accomplish a sweet 16 run, which has happened twice in the existence of the program, he'll lose his job. This right here is a perfect example.

Four times. Still not often, but double the credit you gave.

Ok. So Tubby is expected to win double digit wins at this stage. Even though this expectation isn't outlandish, it's still a level of success that has only happened once in the last 15 years (double digit wins in the B1G). Take away the unofficial record years and it's happened twice in the last 24 years. This is also a great example of not analyzing the history.

This is the problem I have with everybody's history lesson. I'm on board with not counting Clem's success (at least the success vacated by the NCAA). But I don't think we can count those years as "Gophers sucked" years, either. How do we count these years? I don't know. But to lump them in with the years we "haven't won anything" offers a pretty narrow perspective of our history.

Going back to 1948, every Gopher coach who lasted more than two years finished in third place or better more than once (all still on the record), until Monson, who did get to fourth. Most of those tenures were cyclical -- some good some bad. But all had some good. Even Haskins' tenure had success that still counts.

That adds up to a grand total of one coach before Tubby who did not see success that we would jump at today. Tubby would make that two coaches in a row.

Exactly! Dead on!

I agree totally. Coaching is it. The practice facility, the cold weather, the spotty history..on and on...none of it matters if you have the right coach. We do not.

You need two players in basketball. Three are a luxury. The rest are role players. In football you need double figures in playmakers. Basketball you need two and a coach. Finding, selecting the right coach is the "secret" to Minnesota being Duke or Kentucky or even Butler. All the rest is "noise".
