Have been running through the search process and, except for the leaking of Tubby's termination to the media, Teague seems to be running this by the book.

He obviously had a list...it is probably 80-100 deep in candidates and he started at the top and is working his way down. What we don't know is how many agents have been contacted that declined that didn't leak it to the press because it didn't help their clients.

Teague fired Tubby because after 6 years, we weren't going anywhere.

Now Teague is working through his list. Had to wait until the better job was filled at UCLA. USC isn't better, unless your wife is a super model and you live on the beach now...then it's better.

It is clear from what we are hearing is that Teague isn't over paying (Shaka offer) or willing to lose control when it is unwarranted (Flip's Deal).

I suspect that Marshall at Wichita St. is one of the top coaches still on our list, but who knows. There are dozens of Asst. Coaches at big time programs that we can go after next...and Teague will get for around a Mil per year. As far as I am concerned, we are a mid-major program with a high major budget. So a top Asst. Coach could come in here and do a great job and go from making $1mil to $2mil and up just by winning. Never have to leave. Great Opportunity. And if they fail...it is on MN because nobody wins here unless they are cheating (See history of BB program).

Unlike the Maturi FB searches which were both total cluster fu_cks...this search seems to be following the exact steps you would expect. I am not going to say I was in favor of firing Tubby (especially after we failed to land Shaka)...but in the end, it was time for a change.

Spoken like a person who has aspirations to stay at a mid-major level.

Mediocrity, pass it on...

I don't take it that way at all.

Look at the HOF names of basketball and see how many built a program from nothing to something amazing. An aspiring coach has that opportunity here at Minnesota. It can be done and I take GIP's comments to be a positive slant toward that end. I am hoping that NT is going to find that diamond in the rough that becomes a HOF coach here at Minnesota.

Problem is we are in a league full of potential HOF coaches, you have to fight fire with fire. This isn't a 15-20 year turnaround job.

We can all hope.

There is a high expectation when you spend 2.5 million to get rid of one coach that you are going to do more than go after diamonds in the rough. I am in favor of the move to oust Tubby. That time had come, so hats of to NT on that. He has had one opportunity to go major league and decided against that based on ego - so it appears. In doing so he has ticked off a donor base that will be dearly needed to help our diamond in the rough coach compete. Last I heard we need a practice facility and an arena remodel to get out of the dark ages.

I agree. I am rather shocked that people are so distraught that we have not gotten Shaka, Stevens, etc. Seriously people think about it. Freaking Illinois hired Groce, who was at a mid-major. I'm sorry but Illinois is a better program than we have here, with better recruiting location, etc etc. What would people say if we hired someone no one knows and never at least tried to get Shaka, Stevens, Hoiberg, etc? People are drastically over estimating the value of our resources here at the U. What do we have to offer? Facilities? No. History of winning program? No.

I listened to KFAN this morning, and those guys are going on and on about how we are in total disarray, etc. People seriously have a warped view of our program and what kind of person we can attract here. We have done literally nothing lately in the major college basketball world, that's why we are hiring a coach in the first place. Let someone get in here and see what they can do, whoever it is.

I also love these people that say "oh this guy doesn't do it for me". What the H does that mean? Just relax and let it play out, and seriously lower your expectations for what kind of "name" we hire for this job.

First off...FU-CK YOU! Reporting history and truth is not the same in desiring it...you can live in the MN is the Best Job around bubble, but facts clearly show a different reality.

Offering Shaka $2.5 mil per year would have been irresponsible and offering Flip total control when he has zero college coaching experience in the last 25 years would have been irresponsible.

What I am saying is the right coach can lead us out of this mid-major mediocrity. That is the opportunity of coming to MN right now...succeed and you can write your own ticket and paycheck. Fail and it doesn't really hurt your career because we are MN not MSU.

teague has a list of 80-100 coaches better than 2003 AP coach of year? incredible lack of common sense

I just want a coach who at their first PC to talk about how he will take Gopher Nation to the promise land and win that National Championship, and who says Tremendous all the time.

The problem with your comments is that it's based on speculation.

Perhaps Teague has erred in not squashing the speculation with a press conference, but from what I've seen of the man he tends to let brush fires burn themselves out (see former walk-on wide receiver who wrote a thesis paper on Jerry Kill). It seems he's choosing silence until he makes his hire rather than worry about the brush fire of anxious folks on the GH.

Don't have a name, but told this a.m. that Teague has told boosters to expect news by Thurs. Boosters still pushing for Flip, btw. #gophers

If that's really the case (and I have strong doubts that it is), it means Marshall is out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Flip is back in the picture.

Keep in mind I also predicted Tubby would retire.

Maybe the news is Tubby is giving back the $2.5 million.

You're right. We should just go scoop up a future hall of fame coach from somewhere and get them to leave the awesome job they probably already have, and hire them here. Should be pretty simple right? Plus, there is a 100% chance that said coach will succeed, so that 5 million a year salary should be fine for an initial contract to get them.

I don't know why NT hasn't thought of this!

Anyways, I don't care if the coach was a hall of famer or a water boy at his prior job. I'd like to see him become a future hall of fame coach due to success at Minnesota. There is no way Tom Crean (this pains me to say btw, I hate the guy) was a hall of fame coach at Marquette. Yet here he is, Indiana back with a number 1 ranking, competing in a conference full of potential HOF coaches, and winning.

1) I don't think being turned down multiple times is running this by the book.

2) We are not, and will never be, a mid-major. We are a B1G team. We are not a great B1G team, but we are not a mid-major.

2003 AP coach of the year is long ago and far away from today. NT is living in today's world trying to make a hire for this team and University.

The main question I'd have here:

1) Is this "news" in the form of a press conference?

If this is the official hiring date - Any final four coach is out and I have absolutley no clue who he is going to hire. None. You'd have a better chance guessing by drawing names from a hat.

If he is just informing boosters he has a guy - maybe it is only a few boosters and he is hoping for no leaks? It could still be a tournament guy?

All in all, I am just confused.

What a terrible job. Blah, blah, blah, I'm getting so sick of the attitude of what a terrible job and place Minnesota is. To read the attitude of people on here you would think Winona State is a better job. The Gopher job is a great opportunity at a great state school in a great area. It's a program that with names like Mchale, Tucker, Ray Williams, Burton, Bobby Jackson, Thompson,Brewer and Breuer . It's not Northwestern, Penn State or Nebraska. Maybe the nineth best job today in the Big Ten but still national a pretty good job. I do think Teague perhaps should have used the media as a PR tool rather than let the perception exist the search is in such disarray . Which I don't believe is the case.

If his list of potential candidates is 80-100 deep then he's not a very good AD. No power 6 conference AD should have to have that many people under consideration.

This search as been more damning to our basketball program than our February record. Teague does NOT know what he got himself into. He is either living in denial or too pompous to admit his mistakes.

Crean took Marquette to the Final Four. That would make him a Minnesota Hall of Famer.

Have you been watching college basketball lately? The notion of mid-majors is changing. There is as much interest in the mid majors as there is in middle to back of the pack "high majors". Fact is that we are a middle to back of the pack job. Also, names like McHale, Tucker, Burton, etc. don't do ANYTHING for recruiting or elevating our current program. We need a progressive, aggressive coach, whoever that is.

You're clueless. Because missing out on Shaka, Stevens, Hoiberg, and Flip means he doesn't know what he got into? So you'd rather rewind to February and have that every year with Tubby?... LOL

Clueless? The national opinion of our program hasn't been this low since before the day Tubby was hired. If you don't think that matters, you are clueless. The only thing being reported nationally is disarray. The tone of the media is clear. Acting like you know who has been offered is not fact, it's rumor.

I have a question for all of the people concerned about the perception of rejection. Assume that all the worst rumors you have heard and, for some reason have chosen to believe, are true. Would you really have preferred that Teague make a list of the top 50 coaching candidates and then, without making any calls, eliminate all those who he thinks would or might say no just so no one could say that we were rejected? Lots of people move (or don’t) for reasons that are not readily apparent. I’d rather have coach #12 on the list, even if that means the first eleven said no. The alternative is that you get #36 because you were afraid of being rejected by #1-35.

As Chef used to tell the boys on South Park: “You can’t score every time, but when you do, it makes all the trying worthwhile.”
