-800k for UNC
+400K for lack of SDSU buyout, which was basically mandated by B1G with no more FCS
+500K for TCU away
=+100K
Unaccounted for is the 2013 so called buffer playing NMSU, which will help build the program.
Take me through it another way?
I can agree with that math for the most part, though it's really not that simple.
If UNC was still on schedule I doubt we schedule TCU. Though there likely would have been other scheduling moves made to affect the financials.
Though if you only consider the UNC series (assuming that original deal was even for both sides) and SDSU game in 2015 the total cost for Gophers would have been $400K. But that would be for 2 home games and 1 away.
Now, those 3 games have been essentially replaced by @NMSU in 2013, @TCU in 2014, and vs. TCU in 2015. After UNC buyout, getting $500K for going to TCU, and not having to pay TCU or SDSU anything for the 2015 game we are still out $300K. Though that would still leave us up $100K (plus whatever we are getting, if anything, to travel to NMSU) in comparison to the $400K price tag for the 3 games since removed from the schedule.
But while there may be $100K+ savings or gain (or however you want to look at it) when all said and done, you need to keep in mind the home game lost, as the 2home/1away has now become 1home/2away. So you'd have to include revenues lost for that 1 home game if you really want to compare the financials.
In the end I think it all worked out for the best. We are down a home game which sucks but we probably didn't need to have 4 non-conference home games in 2014 (plus that may have been altered in a different way if UNC series was kept). Unless you are SDSU fan, whats the biggie flipping them out for NMSU (when you ook at it that way)? We still get home and home with respectable BCS opponent, only now it is shifted one year back when in theory Kill will have had more time to build and improve "his" team. And the financials probably come out fairly close after factoring in everything. The deal with TCU seems pretty good to me regardless if it fully made up for UNC buyout or not.
