Tanner Morgan Heisman Candidacy

Tanner is currently sitting next to Hurts, Tagovailoa, Burrow, and above Fields in QBR as a Sophomore who didn't start most of his first season.
All of those players are likely going to be invited to New York for this year's Heisman selection.

I know it's not going to happen this year, but if Minnesota can string together a 10-win season and he keeps up this level of play, then he is likely going to be a serious contender on the Heisman radar next season.

Does he have a realistic shot at that trophy playing for Minnesota?

No, not unless A) he continues his current blistering pace long-term, AND we win the B1G Championship (not just the B1G West).

If those two things occur... maybe yes. I mean, his stats are really quite remarkable; and Minnesota winning their first B1G Championship in over 50 years under Morgan's leadership would be quite a remarkable story as well.

It works against him that he's not viewed as the prototypical super-athletic, strong-armed, dynamic-runner-and-passer type QB.

Drew Brees doesn’t fit the mold either, yet he finished 4th in Heisman voting. Morgan’s efficiency stats compare favorably to Brees’ college stats. There was one year he threw for 39 TDs, but he had 20 ints too.

You make some great points.

I hadn't really thought to compare Morgan to Brees, but it does make sense; there are some similarities.

Chase Daniel is another one. He won 12 games and Mizzou finished top 5.

Just think how good he would be if he wasn't getting sacked 2-3x as often as his peers. He's almost certain to regress a little statistically but right now his QB rating is ahead of Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield, and all the other modern Heisman winning QBs.
 

While he is top five nationally in passer rating and ypa, and I think he can do special things...I’m going to sadly say he won’t be in the Heisman talk in 2019 or 2020. He (probably) isn’t going to put up the monster TD, yardage numbers necessary to get in the conversation, and barring a minor (or major) miracle MN probably won’t defeat a surging Ohio State to go to the CFP. Davey O’Brien, Golden Arm award more feasible for him if PJF takes the training wheels off the offense down the road...

Zach might get to start his Senior year, while Morgan is either holding a clipboard on some NFL team’s bench, or fighting to make a practice squad. :)

Lol.....this. Passer rating is nice and all.....but you have to put up gaudy numbers to be in the Heisman conversation.....and that isn't going to happen. 500+ all purpose yard games aren't going to be in his wheelhouse....whereas some of those other guys are going to put up a few and average around 350-400.
 

won't even remotely sniff the discussion. won't have the yardage numbers nor the TD numbers
 

He would need a magic moment like, Doug Flutie's miracle against Miami, it would have to occur this year during a nationally telecast game like Wisconsin, The B1G Championship, or a major bowl game.

In that case, Justin Fields should be removed from consideration.

Morgan passing yards per game: 250
Fields passing yards per game: 216

Fields also has 47 rushing yards per game, but those are a far cry from Heisman worthy numbers, if gaudy numbers are needed.

Obviously we just need to let Tanner start returning kicks and punts!

Ok, now we know how good he would be if not getting sacked a ton. Didn't regress. Still #4 rated passer on par with past Heisman winners in that respect.

Also, go back and look at the old passer rating tables and Zach Terrell, Fleck's old WMU QB, is in the top 10 3 different seasons in passer rating, even when they were a .500 team. There's something to this.
 


I've been trying to find out where Tanner's completion percentage and QB rating rank vs. Top 25 Team, vs a Top 10 Team. I'm guessing up near the best ever.

It looks like the NCAA record for completion percentage is Georgia's Greyson Lambert at 96%, but that was against an unranked (1-2) South Carolina.

Out of those teams on the graphic PSU likely had by far the most talented and fearsome defense which makes it all the more impressive. Oklahoma for example was ranked 84th in 2018 (but 1st in offense).
 




With his promise to stay for his senior year I like his chances in his senior year. He put up big numbers despite not correctly reading his progressions all the time. If he improves his pocket presence and improves his reads I believe that he has Drew Brees type potential.

Interestingly, Tanner’s numbers are actually better, in most areas. Imagine if Tanner had 500+ pass attempts? Of course, they don’t need or want him to throw that often. Brees was much more of a gunslinger in college than Morgan has been, and his defense sucked.
