you're the one who lives in iowa and can't speak english.

I'll be done at least a semester early. Why don't you cheer for your liberal arts school? Did you not get into the U?

Just ignore GortonsFisherman, he's not a good representation of the student body. He has so much class that during a terrible "the ref beats his wife" chant started by some other morons at a hockey game last year, he tried to add "AND HIS KIDS!"

Just so you know Gort, the ref you were yelling that at had his wife pass away a short time before that game. Way to go, Gort, I bet you feel really great now.

Most of the people who are complaining about non-student fans in the student section are:
A) Unable to realize that very soon they won't be students anymore and will be trying to get back in.
B) Think that every non-student is a 65+ years old who sit the whole game and tell the students to sit down.
C) One of the "special people" who dress up one time in something really stupid, realize that they could sit in the reserved section, and now show up every game, 15 minutes before game time, and sit in front of passionate fans who showed up 3 hours early because they wore an completely unrelated costume and they "deserve" special treatment. Or
D) All of the above.

Is that how she died?

For the record I agree with Gorton. But come on guys, after all...

Both of you are twits. (See Roald Dahl's book for a complete description and you'll find it's apt.)

As a lot of folks on this board know, I have a son with Down Syndrome. Alec -- my son -- has more class and character than either of you exhibited in the posts quoted above. He loves sports and loves to compete. He's a dyed-in-the-wool Gopher fan and attends most football and basketball games with me.

Unfortunately, he's mentally retarded. An actual "retard" and, from your quotes, only fit to be disparaged and ridiculed.

In all honesty, I just don't get it. I don't understand what it is that causes posters like the two of you to treat other people that way -- and to discount their value as people. Or do you think because they're challenged, they're fair game to those who have superior intellect and/or physical abilities?

BTW, ILB6969, Alec participates in Special Olympics pretty much the year around. As I said, he loves sports and loves to compete. The image with its message that you posted apparently signifies that you don't have much regard for either Special Olympics or those who compete in Special Olympics. (It's here for those who are curious about what was edited out and why I'm ticked off.)

I wholly disagree that his efforts are futile or laughable -- or that he should stop competing because in the end, he's "still retarded." If you'd like to explain why you discount his efforts, I'd really like to hear you try.

And, if you'd like to explain to the 15-20 athletes I coach in Special Olympics basketball that they shouldn't bother, I'd be curious to hear your "reasoning." I'm sure that you have the talent of world-class athletes and thus aren't/weren't at all reluctant to participate in sports at a premier level of effort. If you're not able to compete at a world-class level, I guess in the end you're still "sub-par."

I don't hide behind a moniker and am fully responsible for what I write. Just click on my name on this post and you can send me an e-mail if you want to have this dialogue in private ... but I'm not willing to have posters like the two of you make those kinds of posts without taking issue. So, I'd really like to read your explanation of why you posted what you did.

mons, obviously with such an intellectual rebuttle that you just made, you should realize that i'm obviously not trying to make fun of the mentally retarded...trying to get my point across without using four letter words. i have a lot of passion for the gophers and i would like to see them without paying an arm and a leg. i'm sure you've heard someone say, "that's retarded" in person before. do you go out of your way to call them out on that like you just did to me? i dont hide behind a moniker, feel free to AIM me, msn me, yahoo IM me, whatever you please...i mean give me a break for goodness sakes...i'm a diabetic, i'm practically handicapped as it is...your son will probably outlive me!

IF I OFFENDED YOU, AND I'M PRETTY SURE I DID, I AM VERY, VERY SORRY

I'll be done at least a semester early. Why don't you cheer for your liberal arts school? Did you not get into the U?

division 3 basketball=not that fun to watch
liberal arts division 3 schools= a lot harder to get into than a big public university like the U

Non-Students probably took up an entire section of the Student GA area last year. During the non-conference schedule, there were so many empty seats that it didn't really bother anyone, with the recent success of the Tubby Era things have changed. No non-current should take away the opportunity for a student to get a ticket, it just hasn't been a problem in the recent past when they haven't sold out.

If current students can consistantly fill up the section this year, then the U absolutely has made the right decision to check ID's and limit to one per person. This is coming from a guy that has sat in the student section for the past 3 years out of school. Current students better fill that place up and make it loud though.

i hi'm sure you've heard someone say, "that's retarded" in person before. do you go out of your way to call them out on that like you just did to me?

Yep -- every single time. Just like I do when I hear somebody (unless they're African-American) use the "N" word to describe an African-American person. It's not "going out of my way" when it's used in public and within my earshot.

And it's not me that you've offended as much as it is people who are mentally retarded but work hard and participate as fully as they can in our society. They neither deserve the put-downs nor should we permit them to occur without protest.

All I know is the Barnyard is the best student section at the U. Football is getting a lot better, and hockey is too concerned with talking down to everyone else, but the Barnyard has been carrying the mail since us "300" were doing it back in the fall of 2004.

It's the internet, Rick. I can't be responsible for who is reading my postings, and furthermore who their families are and what their situations are. Like I said, you're smart enough to know I wasn't trying to offend anyone with a handicap.

Despite your bragging about graduating from a private four-year liberal arts college, you don't get it.

"It's the Internet" -- the weak and standard justification for anyone who decides that they have free rein to write whatever they wish and damn the audience. Using that rationale, it's okay to write "I'm going to 'jew them down' to a low price." Or, she's as "dumb as a Polack" Or, "it was as dark as a n***er in a coal mine." Or, "drunk as an Indian who just got their check from the casino."

You really think it's okay as long as you don't intend to demean or insult the Jew, the Polish, people of color and/or Native Americans? You honestly think that slurs like those would really be bad only if you intended to disparage another party?

Bullcrap.

At the Air Force game, a fan behind us was complaining about how "retarded" the event staff were for searching bags and refusing to admit those with backpacks, etc. I looked at Alec and could tell he heard and felt the slur. I turned around and pointed out that Alec is truly retarded and it was a lousy choice of words. Instead of trying to justify his statement on the basis he'd had too much to drink and/or that it was a phrase that came without thinking about it (a lack of intent), he immediately apologized to Alec. He got it ... you don't.

Don't bother to reply ... you're on "ignore" from here on.

yes i do...i think intentions are the most important thing...i've never intended to hurt anyone

My bro in law is a grad student at the U and he bought 2 student season tickets. My only chance to go without spending a ton of $ is with these tickets. I'm the biggest Gophers fan there is! Don't check ID's please!!!

Tell em brother Jake! Don't check the student IDs. It makes no sense. If I buy two tickets as a student and give one to my brother in law, who did go to the U and is a huge fan, it adds to the excitement.

It worked fine last year. Why should a new football stadium affect the basketball season?

Get a clue!

Some of you on this board just make me plain sick, the way you talk about people less fortunate then you.

I truly hope you are never in a situation where you are faced with a close family member or even worse yourself where you are ridiculed about being a "retard" or other comments that are hurtful and worse down right offensive.

I as a parent of child with severe disabilities (brain injury, blind, can't speak, can't run) just feel sick when I hear people talk about people that are less fortunate. It's hard enough to go through society and see children the same age as my daughter (6) doing things normal developing children do that she can't and probably never will. But to listen to idiots on this board talk down to people using words and phrases that hurt people who are less fortunate make me sick!

Get a clue!

You get a clue because you are clueless. I'm not intentionally making fun of anyone or anyone's disabilities. Wow, you need to grow a backbone and realize NO ONE IS MAKING FUN OF YOU OR YOUR KID.

Your post was tasteless and clearly caused offense. By defending your right to make offensive comments you appear boorish. Perhaps you might instead try elevating your own behavior and rethink the effect your comments have had on others.

You do not deserve to use Malik Sealy's name as your moniker.
