Student Section - Student Perspective

I'm a season ticket holder and would love nothing more than if the student section moved to the sideline. Why? Because it would create a better atmosphere resulting in a better team.

If I'm a kid being recruited by Minnesota and Michigan, I'm going to give a point to MI when I picture myself running down the court next to a sideline of students screaming my name.

Sure, this is an investment by giving up those high priced tix, but there's an ROI to take into consideration when you consistantly have a BigTen contender on your hands.

Thank you Varmint Cong!

I am neither a student nor a season ticket holder. I don't even live in Minnesota. But I've been to dozens of games at the Barn in the past decade, and most of the rest I've seen on TV. I'm calling it like I see it by pointing out that there is no comparison between our arena and other arenas when it comes to atmosphere and crowd involvement. And I'm not just comparing the Gophers to the programs that have won more games in that timeframe.

I feel like certain fans are banging their heads against a wall by saying "we pay for the program so I can stay sitting if I want" or "the students can be just as loud where they are". There's a reason so many schools put the students along the sideline. Why don't you naysayers suggest why that might be? For one thing, it looks GREAT on tv to have several hundred amped up college kids on camera, as opposed to having several hundred pouting sitters behind the scorer's table.

Another poster doubted that opposing players are intimidated by what's going on more than 2 feet beyond the court. That is ridiculous. EVERYTHING plays on an athlete's psyche. All courts are the same dimensions, have the same backboards, basketballs, etc... so what gives teams on their homecourts such a great advantage? There is actually science to the notion of "feeding off the crowd's energy", which includes, of course, wilting under the pressure of hostile crowd.

It is also asinine to suggest that more students wouldn't come to the games if they knew they would be within 3, 5, or even 8 rows of the sideline, as opposed to being 20 rows up under the overhang along the baseline.

For heavens sake, you are a college a student. You should be able to figure that out. And wouldn't we all love seats along the side. One day you too will be a corporate big shot and you will have those seats along the side.

a little late to this thread but I kind of wanted to look at some things in a game setting instead of going off of memory.

I don't think along the sidelines will work unless you can make sure the whole sideline wants to stand all game. Hard to imagine having to make a choice like that on your season ticket renewal form.

but I do think moving the band more to the corner and get students all the way behind the basket would be a good move. More students closer to the floor and more disruptive to the opposing teams shooters in the 2nd half. The problem I see with that is that is one whole section of regular price tickets moving around the arena to house that many more student priced tickets. And anytime you take away revenue like that we are going to get another sponsored timeout or sponsored contest to make up the revenue.

The band members are students too you know.

to be honest while i appreciate the band, at least with how they are now all they contribute is to kill any enthusiasm the student section has at that point. we want to get a cheer going or just go wild at a timeout etc but no some random song, and yes the rouser gets everyone on their feet but what then? the old people sit back down and everything dies off again.

I'm pretty certain he knows that...

If you look at Cameron Indoor, you see the band behind the basket and the students all around...
