Student Section is SOLD OUT

So how come the undergrad students from Wisconsin who go to Minnesota, be wearing Red on Saturday? Not saying but certainly some.

I hate to agree with you, but no matter where you're from or what other kinds of schooling you have, your team should always be your undergrad school. It's very sad when someone cheers against their school - you just don't get it if you let things like where you're originally from or who you liked to cheer for when you were younger override your actual collegiate experience.

OK, I feel bad agreeing with a Badger fan, so can someone please respond to him with the standard "we have all the jobs here in Minnesota" post?

Did that last year with a bunch of the same people. We got tickets through my little brother's frat (he's a junior at Wisco) and went with a bunch of people, both Gophers and Badgers. I always love reading these boards and hearing about how awful the Badger fan base is and what drunk assholes we are; perception is so much different than that of the average fan. I've been to 4 games at the bank and the only differences I noticed between Minnesota and Wisconsin was the number of fans and the general loudness within the stadium. I've never been to a Badger-Gopher game at the Camp without some Gopher fans either. Lots of intermingling, but maybe my extended friend group and family is the exception?

I'll probably be a Jerry's Wagon tailgate for a bit (I think that's what it's called); I'm sure I'll be bumping into a lot of Gopherholers. I hope I can live up to the drunken slob standards that are expected of me haha. Shouldn't be a problem as I'll be at the SAE house from 8am-10am.

Well, this coming from a badger fan is the least surprising thing I've read so far today.

Did a little research on the Gopher ticket site and their are currently 164 tickets still available for the game and I only found 2 that are not singles. Wuck Fisconsin!

Same reason people cheer for the Miami Heat, Alabama, USC, Patriots etc. They want to be wearing the winning colors. Notice I left-off the Lakers? At the Wolves game last night saw a whole bunch of Clippers jerseys. Even at Clippers games in the past, there were always Lakers jerseys around. Didn't see one last night.

Beat the Badgers a few times and those Sconie jerseys will be in kept in a drawer.

Anybody seen a whole lot of Milwaukee Bucks jerseys around here?

I was born in Minnesota and my dad is a Packer fan, but I am a Viking fan because I can think for myself. You are from Minnesota, getting your MBA from there, sitting in the student section wearing the most hated rivals colors just seem wrong. Although probably not as wrong as the undergrads from Wisconsin who go to Minnesota and will red on Saturday.

Hmmm, well I did think for myself when I went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for my undergrad. You honestly think I would not support Wisconsin just because I live in Minneapolis and am getting my MBA from Minnesota? Getting my MBA from Minnesota is a business decision, nothing more.

You are out of your frickin mind if you think that I will be wearing maroon and gold on Saturday simply because of where I live. What a dumb argument haha. People that adopt a rival as their own aren't true fans of either program. I was and never will be a Gopher fan. I don't hate the Gophers either, because I'm not a child, I just don't support them.

Totally understandable, honestly. Then here you go, stop by next time we play in a Bowl Game.

How so? Undergrad at Wisconsin. Been a Badger fan my whole life. I'm from the twin cities and I work downtown. It makes sense for me to get my MBA in the same city I want to work in - the connections made are as valuable as the education itself.

I wouldn't hire you.

Nope just dont think you should be wearing red in the student section with your U of M connections and then bragging about it on a message board, Hey look at me.

FWIW, I'm not bragging about it. I'm just excited for the game. My friends want to sit in the student section, which is fine with me. I don't see it as a big deal. It happens everywhere.

You know it haha. I didn't know SAE had such a bad reputation on this board. I wasn't in a frat so I don't really know, I just have a lot of friends from high school that are or were in SAE.

As much as it pains me to say it, ToddisGahd isn't wrong at all for being a lifelong Becky fan. Hence the problem with simply assuming 'well hey, there are 3 million folks in the metro, of COURSE we should be able to sell out our stadium after 40 years of futility.' There are tons of people who haven't yet attended college who grow up following Wisconsin/Iowa (mainly) and UND/NDSU/UMN/SCSU/MS-M/ISU/UW-XYZ/etc simply because their parents went there. If not direct rivals in major sports (IA/WI), they're rivals in other sports (hockey schools) or followers of a different conference (ISU) or followers of UW-Madison by proxy of being in the state-school system (UW-XYZ). People grow up following a program. If I moved to Chicago, my kids would grow up Gopher fans. Saying they could have a mind of their own is inane. You buy then Gopher stuff as a kid, take them to a road game (or travel to MN for a game 1x a year). Etc. This Todd chump didn't choose where he lived as a kid, but did choose to go to UW, and now came back to our wonderful state a lifelong Badger fan. Now he's at the U for MBA, so what? He's no on campus 24/7, it's a career move. I'm a distance UNL MBA student and follow them a little more but could never in my life root for them against the U.

The kids who need to get things straight are the ones from Wisconsin who made a conscious decision to attend the UMN yet still root for the Badgers. Get behind your alma mater.

It won't be like this, but as long as it isn't 2006-2007 basketball SS style vs. Wisconsin. Where Wisco was 4 in the country and there were more Badgers in the SS than Gophers, the worst part being the majority of the Badger fans were attending the U. Those were dark days.

also I went to gopher/badger game last year and it was awesome and the people were great for the most part.

Spot on. I especially agree with the bolded part, although I do admit I get a tinge of happiness when I see a Gopher put on red. It's almost always girls though; most guys have too pride as far as their alma mater goes, rightfully so. A lot of girls seem indifferent and are there for the experience.

I agree with this. I don't see a big problem in ToddisGahd's fandom other than his terrible gopherhole name. Undergrad is where your allegiance should be if you ask me.

Been my experience as well. I know four Wisconsin natives who went to the U. Three are badgers fans and one is a Gophers fan. The three badger fans are women. I think they just go along with everyone around them, and are definitely much bigger bandwagon fans.

Man or woman, it is pathetic in my opinion.

Very true.

To be fair, I was close to being one of those kids. I was wait-listed at Wisconsin, so I started planning to attend Minnesota. I was admitted to Wisconsin in March, but had that not happened, I would have attended Minnesota for a while and transferred to UW, cheering for the Badgers along the way.

Obviously that isn't the case with all of these kids, but I wouldn't be surprised if a considerable chunk of them wanted to go to Wisconsin and were denied.

Preemptive Edit: I'm not trying to start a war about who has better academics. Both are fantastic schools with each having more competitive programs than the other in different fields.

I really love Todd Bertuzzi from NHL 2009. Best game ever.

+1. Cheer for your school. When someone goes to one school, but remains a fan of the school from their home state, it's like they've disconnected the team from the school. It's sort of like getting married but still dating your high school girlfriend.

I know one guy like this..."I cheer for Gopher hockey though..." Worst kind of fan IMHO.

On the bright side I have a friend born and raised down the road from UW coming from the coast to cheer on his alma mater UM this weekend. :)
