STrib: Jay Johnson is New Offensive Coordinator

I'll bite. Show me his worst game and our best.

Let's compromise and I'll give you seasons

The averages are his five offenses ranked according to 2015-2016 statistics, so an average offense would be expected to be 45th and 54th in points and yards per game respectively.

Couple things stick out:
-Trend lines aren't great, although BIG leaps were made between 2010 and his first season in 2011. There has been chatter that he clashed with the HC on personnel later in his tenure.
-Yardwise, his offenses were more productive in every year than the best of ours, and if defensive PPG was taken out from these stats I bet the same would be true for that as well.

Notable cherries picked from this: (Average stats over five years versus 2015-2016 season)
-Average offense in YPG would've been higher than Texas A&M, Miami, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State this year.
-Average offense in PPG would've been higher than FSU, Michigan, Miss St., Texas A&M, and Wisconsin this year.

To sum it up, a solid hire. If he was much better we probably wouldn't have gotten the chance to hire him because someone else would've snatched him up.

I worked for him and the rest of the coaching staff at Augsburg College during his two years there. Jay and I are the same age so this is what I remember about his time at my old school. Jay is an intense, likable person, who can coach and gets along with others. I also remember him leaving before Augsburg won their MIAC football title. He had current HC of Osseo Darrin Lamker as his QB and WR Scott Hvistendahl the first player to break Jerry Rice's yardage record. Both players will be in the Augsburg Hall of fame and Hvistendahl likely in the college football hall of fame. He worked for current OL of Osseo Jack Osberg.

Scott Hvistendahl (Augsburg '99), football/baseball -- A wide receiver, Hvistendahl was the first player to break the NCAA's all-divisions career receiving yardage record held by NFL legend Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State, 1981-84). Hvistendahl caught 285 passes for 4,696 career yards. He scored 41 touchdowns (40 receiving, 1 rushing) in his career.

Thanks for the info. I'm a 1970s Augsburg grad and I was having trouble locating the era in which Johnson coached at Augsburg. I went to the game at the Metrodome when Hvistendahl broke the record. A real thrill. Then the next Monday, I get an earful of Dubay on KFAN saying how the record really means nothing because it's small college ball.

Did Lamker get an invite to a pro camp? I thought he did, but I could be wrong.

Okay. Decent, however I really am not a fan of the option style run game anymore. We've seen it so much lately that it's just simply not effective. Move leidner to tight end, red shirt green and let croft start next year. That's best for the whole team unfortunately with Jerry being dumb and taking his redshirt away he will be a sophomore next year. Let's let him get his shot. Leidner can be very effective at TE.

Wow. Take the quarterback that just threw 80% in a bowl game and move him to tight end so that we can play Croft with his 41% completion rate. Brilliant.

So essentially just bench Leidner then? He has never played TE. What makes you think he can be effective just like that at a position he has never played?

You play the best QB, it's that simple.

The first year head coach with just a three year contract should move his senior qb with 722 career pass attempts to tight end and roll with the rest of the QBs that have a combined 17 career pass attempts?

We may have our winner of our "most ridiculous post of the week" award! Congratulations!

This is a bit right?

This has to be a bit correct? This cannot be an original idea.

He was drinking lots of Rum & Coke!

At my core I guess I kind of agree with u. I don't like running our QB as much as we do. I think with our tailback combo of Brooks and Smith we could line up in the I formation and toss sweep folks to death. Having said that, I could live with our current system if we had the right QB to run it. I think most of our offensive struggles, besides injuries, are due to the fact that every year under Kill we have had non-athletic, drop back style passers physical wise, trying to run a QB read option where they have to run the ball a good bit. Leidner, Streveler and others can run, but they are plodders when they do so. To run the style of offense that we have been trying to run u need quickness AND speed at the QB position. Someone like Navy's Keenan Reynolds would be a good example. If the new OC chooses to run that style I hope Croft and Green turn out to be better for that system than what we've had.

I want to add something else. I think ML7, while not ideal physically for the style Limey tried to run, has done a great job at trying to improve and succeed with the hand he has been dealt. I commend him and the staff for the fine play last night and wish him continued success next season. He should be the starter going in and hopefully will be put in situations where he is asked to run less and "QB" more.

Running the QB gives you an extra blocker and another thing for the D to account for. There's a reason a large percentage of recent championship level teams have had a running threat at QB. Defenses hate running QBs

A running QB prevents defenses from playing man coverage in the secondary which in turn leaves fewer defenders rushing the passer or available for run support.

Yes, defenses do hate QB's that run. But defenses love for QB's who r slow and lack athleticism to run. They aren't afraid of that and don't respect it. The point of my original post is that the QB's we've been playing with are not runners. They r plodders. To run this offense u need someone with speed, quickness and the ability to throw. See Clemson last night with Watson. ML7 and Strevler have done the best they can but their skill set isn't ideal for what Limey was trying to do.

You know the O.c. Dad was liedner qb coach at Lakeville right?

Yes I knew the Lakeville connection. But to think a HC is going to ask his QB who he should hire as an OC is inane.

I thought the word on Streveler was he was quite fast- thus the attempted transition to WR. His lack of success at QB was related to his inability to throw the ball.

Streveler is plenty fast, he just can't throw. And QBs like Leidner can be successful in that type of offense. Kansas St did it with Colin Klein a few years back. Mitch isn't quick but he is fast enough (when healthy) to present problems.

Streveler is really fast straight line. Not sure how good of a scrambler he would be. He had so few chances to throw we don't know. I do really hope he can find a spot as a receiver.

I don't know him but I like what I've heard now. I really like the OL hire.
