STrib: Jay Johnson is New Offensive Coordinator

So if Claeys will allow Jay Johnson to run his style of offense, where does that leave Leidner? Leidner can rumble, but not really run. Johnson's style of offense is probably perfect for Seth. Will we see an open competition at QB next year?

Leidner will be the starting QB next year.

But, I expect to see Croft in some games maybe to give Leidner some rest.

Croft will transition into a starter with Seth Green possibly red shirted.

It leaves Leinder as the starting QB. He's not a statue out there and he only has one year left so if Johnon has to tweak the O slighlty so be it.

I hate the QB running so much and getting banged up with us having so little depth. It hurt us struggling in NC that we never were able to give our regulars much of a break-- would be nice to have games wrapped up after 3 quarters

I know nothing about him- was hoping for someone from a bigger school or somebody from another state for recruiting purposes.
You were hoping for the OC from Ohio State or Florida State? I think you follow the wrong squad.

fine-- ULL has one three star in this years class-- hope he comes here-- he is TE from Texas. ULL is not even in the top 100 on Rivals so my point is I doubt many of those recruits are what we are looking for.

This is what I would call, not a very smart take.

Oddly enough, Johnson was rumored to be one of 5-6 candidates for tOSU O. Coord. last year.

At least the wait is over. I was surprised by the hire, but intrigued as I played for Johnson at Augsburg. When he came in they told us he had just been at Kansas, and I think TC was there at same time, is that the possible connection? Looking forward to the OL development. It should be pointed out that Bob Bostad was the Wisc OL coach that laid the foundation for those OL's.

Leidner will start at QB next year. Not sure why Gopher fans think he'll be benched.

Seth better be red-shirted.

Go Gophers!!

I can't say that I've watched his offenses at all, so I don't have an opinion on whether his offense is going to work or not. I do know his family fairly well though, and he is a legitimately good guy. My parents and his parents were close friends. I graduated from Lakeville the same time that he was at Augsburg, and he brought a couple of guys that I graduated with to Augsburg as well as at least one guy that I know to Truman St. I've never heard a bad word about him. He is the type of guy that you want as a mentor for your kids.

Nice to hear! Thanks for sharing.

Excellent! Like hearing that.

I like it that he may bring an exciting brand of offense and is a good mentor.

His ties to the area, and having worked together with Claeys at Kansas is a big plus. It seems that Claeys wanted coaches who get along well with others, and who treat the kids right in addition to coaching skills.

My guess is Leidner gets most all the snaps but Croft will see action as well. Could be a transition year. All I hope for is balance and some semblance of a vertical passing game.

I don't care for any system where the QB is asked to run all that much. I like to see my QB's throw the ball and I like to see my RB's run it. I want to see a Pro-style system that has balance and can be effective running and throwing. We will see if Johnson can bring that or if we will be stuck in the same struggles we have now.

At my core I guess I kind of agree with u. I don't like running our QB as much as we do. I think with our tailback combo of Brooks and Smith we could line up in the I formation and toss sweep folks to death. Having said that, I could live with our current system if we had the right QB to run it. I think most of our offensive struggles, besides injuries, are due to the fact that every year under Kill we have had non-athletic, drop back style passers physical wise, trying to run a QB read option where they have to run the ball a good bit. Leidner, Streveler and others can run, but they are plodders when they do so. To run the style of offense that we have been trying to run u need quickness AND speed at the QB position. Someone like Navy's Keenan Reynolds would be a good example. If the new OC chooses to run that style I hope Croft and Green turn out to be better for that system than what we've had.

I want to add something else. I think ML7, while not ideal physically for the style Limey tried to run, has done a great job at trying to improve and succeed with the hand he has been dealt. I commend him and the staff for the fine play last night and wish him continued success next season. He should be the starter going in and hopefully will be put in situations where he is asked to run less and "QB" more.

They never worked together.

On the fence about this hire. I don't like that the passing game (in terms of yards per game at least) trended downward at both schools he was the OC at during his tenure. At both Southern Miss and ULL, the most successful year passing the football came in Johnson's first season. Of his 8 years as an OC, Johnson's teams finished 75th or worse in passing offense 5 times. Scoring offense also trended in the wrong direction during his OC tenures as well. The good news is that the rushing offense improved during his tenure at both schools (though fell off significantly last season).

I do like that Johnson has a lot of experience as an OC and seems to have some creative run plays in his arsenal. I am interested in how much of the QB run stuff translates to the B1G as I don't think the hits on the QB are worth it unless you have a QB who can actually break big plays. Running a Mitch Leidner level athlete a bunch never made much sense to me.

Two of his last three QBs at ULL ran for a little more than 400 yards for the season. About what Mitch did in each of his first two years. That's not asking a lot. We'll be fine folks, relax.

I worked for him and the rest of the coaching staff at Augsburg College during his two years there. Jay and I are the same age so this is what I remember about his time at my old school. Jay is an intense, likable person, who can coach and gets along with others. I also remember him leaving before Augsburg won their MIAC football title. He had current HC of Osseo Darrin Lamker as his QB and WR Scott Hvistendahl the first player to break Jerry Rice's yardage record. Both players will be in the Augsburg Hall of fame and Hvistendahl likely in the college football hall of fame. He worked for current OL of Osseo Jack Osberg.

Scott Hvistendahl (Augsburg '99), football/baseball -- A wide receiver, Hvistendahl was the first player to break the NCAA's all-divisions career receiving yardage record held by NFL legend Jerry Rice (Mississippi Valley State, 1981-84). Hvistendahl caught 285 passes for 4,696 career yards. He scored 41 touchdowns (40 receiving, 1 rushing) in his career.

Cautiously optimistic about the hire.

Our offense has been putrid - even at the worst, his offenses were more productive than ours.

Not even remotely. I'm not trying to be mean here, but these kind of posts are ridiculous. My god.

I'll bite. Show me his worst game and our best.

Only time will tell if this is a good hire, but I sense a positive vibe after the dismissal of the old QB coach and OC. The play calling was better last night, even without an OC, and Leidner looked far more confident than in the past. It was hard to see a lot of improvement in the offensive line, but that will obviously be a point of emphasis for the coming season. We could be on the verge of seeing future Minnesota QBs consistently reaching their potential rather than simply trying not to make mistakes. One game does not make a season, but I would not be surprised to see Leidner have a fantastic year and I expect the running game will improve.

I like the idea of separating the Offensive Coordinator from the Offensive Line Coach. Mission Accomplished.

To your point, Minnesota actually had more total yards and yards per play this year than ULL.

I believe the Gophers were 7th in the Big Ten this year in yards per play so to say our offense was putrid is a bit of an exaggeration.
