per Joe:

Claeys is finalizing the hire of Louisiana-Lafayette offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson for those same roles at Minnesota, people familiar with the decision said Monday.

Johnson graduated from Lakeville High School in 1988 and played quarterback for Northern Iowa before launching his 23-year coaching career, which also includes stints as offensive coordinator at Augsburg (1994-95), Truman State (1995-96) and Southern Miss (2005-07).

In his five seasons at Louisiana-Lafayette, his offenses have been known for their balance between the run and the pass. Claeys has said he likes 75-80 percent of how the Gophers operated under former offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover.

Go Gophers!!

I think this is a solid hire. Like the addition of he and Miller.

I know nothing about him- was hoping for someone from a bigger school or somebody from another state for recruiting purposes.

I like both hires as well. Wonder if there are any good recruits they can bring along with them.

He's coached in the south for a good part of his career (Louisiana and Mississippi).

Sounds like a guy that's ripe for some B1G action. Welcome, Jay.

I really hope we were not battling ULL and FAU for recruits

You wouldn't take a 5.7 rated (Rivals) recruit? Just because they were comitted to ULL?

Kurt Warner held the clipboard for 3 years behind him at UNI.

Really love this hire! I've watched more ULL football in the past 4 years and their offense never seemed to struggle moving the ball.

Hey - he was the OC at Augsburg - he has to be good.

Seriously - I wonder if anyone knows the connection between Johnson and Claeys. I assume Claeys didn't pull his name out of a hat. there has to be a connection somewhere.

No quite sure what you are even talking about in either of these posts.

No one from a "bigger" school is coming to Minnesota unless he just got canned and has no hope (baggage).

Second post is just dumb.

fine-- ULL has one three star in this years class-- hope he comes here-- he is TE from Texas. ULL is not even in the top 100 on Rivals so my point is I doubt many of those recruits are what we are looking for.

"I think good coordinators on both sides of the ball take care of other team's weaknesses. I will make sure that we get someone in there who has a proven record of doing that."

-Claeys

That statement by Claeys, definitely has me believing in this hire.

I honestly hadn't heard of him before, but from everything I'm hearing and reading he sounds like a good fit (run heavy spread offense).

He was great on Soap too.

I don't care for any system where the QB is asked to run all that much. I like to see my QB's throw the ball and I like to see my RB's run it. I want to see a Pro-style system that has balance and can be effective running and throwing. We will see if Johnson can bring that or if we will be stuck in the same struggles we have now.

Do you even really follow Gopher football? Has this staff ever cared about stars and recruiting rankings?

Why? Are the Gophers at a disadvantage by not running a "pro stye" system?

Terrance Broadway ran the ULL offense well and was a pretty exciting player. Definitely plays designed to get the QB running.

the original question to me stated a 5.7 rated rivals player-- I could care less on the ranking or stars. However I do think what other teams offered are a good indicator of raw talent
