STrib: Beer, maybe wine, foreseen at TCF Bank Stadium

‎"It says that alcohol sales will start an hour before kickoff and stop at the end of halftime." This is backwards...given the history of Gopher football they should open the beer garden at halftime and let it run a hour after the game is over...for the sake of humanity!

It's called preventive medicine.

I am still wondering where it will be in the stadium.

West end. The key is that the "beer garden" is simply where you need to walk to in order to buy a couple of beers. You can then take the beers with you back to your seat (or to your buddies).

I suspect a lot of folks will be walking throughout the stadium double-fisting beers early in the third quarter of each game.

I thought they were going to make it so you couldn't take the beers from the garden?

I thought that I read earlier that you had to drink your beers there. Does anybody else have the same understanding that I do? I can't believe the above can possible be correct because it goes against everything they were trying to accomplish when they agreed to the "beer garden" concept.

P.S. - I am amazed how many people don't seem to realize that the "beer garden" was created to allow the University to sell beer to the suites. Many of the Democrats in the legislature wouldn’t accept that beer could only be sold in the suites. Thus the "beer garden" became the "solution" where the “common man or woman” could get a beer. Politics at its finest!

The U has routinely flip-flopped on issues over recent years. I think most people have the same understanding that you two do, but that is not my understanding. In addition, I think the re-introduction of alcohol to the "premium seats" (which does not include the $400 donation level, mind you) at Williams Arena and Mariucci will occur as well.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not put it in the open end plaza. That would be a travesty. Those food vendors underneath the scoreboard are bad enough.

Get ready for a travesty. They will also probably have an ugly tarp that hides the beer-selling activities from those who are outside the stadium.... it'll be an absolute zoo at halftime.

You can take this any way you want, because I'm not going to name them.

Both a Regent and a major donor (on of 6/27, you figure it out) made it very clear that the beer stays in the suites and in the beer garden. No sales or drinking outside those areas. They also made it clear that the "beer garden" will be very, very limited in capacity...and maybe not out in the open. Take that any way you want, too.

I hope so. The little concourse above the second level on the away side is where I would put it.

Quite often, what people say and do are completely different things. I'm wondering who this person is that made it very clear, yet you don't want to name? Do you mean they made it very clear to you or a small group of people, but wanted to keep it quiet? If so, then you're thinking this person will vote against the proposal tomorrow?

Anyone know how many votes are required in order to pass the proposal?

Beer will be consumed throughout the stadium, but only sold in the west end in an ugly tent (and "premium areas, as defined).

Really! Do you have a clue what the politics of the issue are? It isn't going to happen!

GW, I don't know where you get your info, but I hope you're wrong. These quotes from the linked article lend credit to highway's claim.

""It will be a restricted and controlled environment where they will be very careful about requiring identification, so students will not have access," said regents Chairwoman Linda Cohen.

No alcohol will be allowed at the Veterans Memorial or on the Tribal Nations Plaza near the west-end gates of the stadium.

It's "a balanced approach offering very limited sales in the general seating area," Amy Phenix, chief of staff for university President Eric Kaler, said in a statement. "First and foremost, we are committed to the safety of students and fans and to being good neighbors.""

That sounds like it will be sold and consume in the garden, which will not be near the plaza.

Really! Do you have a clue what the politics of the issue are? It isn't going to happen!

It has to happen that way. I'll bet you $50. PM if interested.

To be clear, I win the bet if: you are allowed to purchase beers and then go walk around the stadium (outside of the 'beer garden tent') with those beers.

And why is that? Do you realize what the consequences would be if you happened to be right? The University of Minnesota would never risk its credibility with the legislature over this issue. The University got what it wanted, i.e. that ability to increase their revenue for their suites by offering alcohol. The “beer tent” may not be a sham but it close to that. Its primary purpose is to satisfy those members of the legislature who didn’t like the elitist idea of just selling alcohol in the suites.

You've been fooled if you truly believe what you typed. Anyway, how about the bet? $50 to the charity of the winner's choice?

I should know better than to go any further with this but what is the bet you are actual proposing?

I win if: during the 2012 season, football fans of age can head over to the beer garden tent at TCF Bank Stadium, purchase a couple of beers, and head out of the beer garden tent with those beers.

You win if they cannot.

Loser pays $50 to the winner, which the winner then donates to his charity of choice (thus the winner receives (a) a tax deduction and (b) the ability to direct $50 to the charity of his choice).

What are the consequences you think we'll see from this? I don't think there will be much. Some people will shake their heads in disgust for a brief period of time, then get over it. Fans of other schools will throw out some insults.. but, that's about it. (Well, except for the game day experience, which will a lot of drinking throughout the stadium).

My only reason for thinking GW is wrong is b/c of the U's attempts to keep it out of the hands of underage students. I have no doubt that the U might switch from previously voiced positions. It's just that the underage student position was voiced so loudly for so long and if they let beer be taken out of the garden then they open that concern back up.

That said, the one main reason I can see for doing so was a realization during planning that there was no practical way to implement the garden if they forced people to stay within it to drink. At that point I could see them moving to strict controls (like 1 beer per patron) as a way to control the alcohol so much as to make the underage student issue more moot.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not put it in the open end plaza. That would be a travesty. Those food vendors underneath the scoreboard are bad enough.

Where else are they going to put it? The only other areas with space are on the upper deck outside the fences.

BTW, I'm not sure if the article was updated since you posted this but here is how it reads now (important section is bolded):

The concourse above the upper deck away side. Not a lot of room, but enough for a controlled garden.

Or they could easily convert one of the concession stands into a garden. Or the top level of Goldy's Lockerroom. Lots of options other than the open end.

Hmm...that was not there when I read it. Sneaky.

Putting it in the open end gives the illusion that they are doing so out of their care for the students.. i.e., "see, it's clearly far away from the student section.. if those of age want to come and grab a couple of cold ones, they have to walk **all the way** over here to buy it".

I think if it was a closed beer garden it could never be big enough. If it was too small there would be cries that they just did this for the suites and they are denying Everyman his beer because he has to wait an hour to get in.

One improvement over the dome will be controlled entry with experienced ID checkers (cops?). In the dome it was first time volunteer soccer dads and the like. I'll bet it will be intimidating for a kid with anything other than a real ID.
