Steve Wojciechowski linked to Gophers job

who ya got?

If we are going assistant coach, I am fine with that but not Wojo.

As far as a list of college basketball head coaches who have already been successful. . . we aren't even CLOSE to running out of names. It's not even remotely close.

Successful college basketball head coaches available to the Gophers:
Can we agree to eliminate the Coach K's, Boeheim, Huggins, Roy Williams, Bill Self, Rick Pitino, Mark Few, Jamie Dixon, Calapari, Sean Miller, Donovan kind of guys? Those type of guys who are not coming...agreed?

We have eliminated: Shaka, Brad Stevens, Hoiberg, Jacobsen, Enfield, Jay Wright, Cincy guy, Flip, ...Buzz seems unlikely...Marshall seems unlikely...Grant probably turned us down? I'm forgetting some

Ben Howland, Kelvin Sampson, Quinn Snyder, Gillespie etc fall in a bigger group to leave alone

Bruce Weber, Steve Lavin, Lorenzo Romar, Bob McKillopp, Tim Floyd, Larry Eustachy fit some definition of successful but not mine if I'm hiring...

That leaves these guys to me that have had success but I know nothing about:
Tim Cluess Iona, Dave Paulsen Bucknell, Geno Ford Bradley, Scott Nagy So Dak St, Keith Dambrot Akron, Randy Benett St Marys as maybes....who is on your head coach not "even CLOSE" to exhaustion list? I kinda got the idea it was long? I'm thinking guys trending up versus down?

Well, if going the assistant route, the thing about Wojo is the complete uncertainty surrounding him, as he has never been a head basketball coach at any level. He would be an ultimate wildcard, might work, might colossally flop.

The one thing he unquestionably does have going for him is intensity, as he does burn, and his court-slapping histrionics are just personification of that. However, you need to do much more than burn in order to be a successful head coach, and especially at this level, and in that regard, I have no idea regarding Wojo.

It would be a huge roll of the dice, and I can only trust Teague to make that decision.

The school recruits itself, beware of cogs within a micromanaged machine.
This is correct. Sometimes people forget that every Duke coach, over the last 50 years, has recruited pretty well, with the exception of Neill McGeachy. Even Bucky Waters, whose record wasn't all that great (of course, Maryland, N C State, South Carolina & North Carolina were all having pretty good years while he was coach), brought in some exceptional talent. Vic Bubbas had lots of talent. As proof, a higher percentage of his teams went to the Final Four than Krzyzewski's, and Bubbas coached in an age when you had to win the ACC Tournament just to get to the NCAA"s. The school does recruit itself.

Might as well get former Wisconsin guard Mike Kelly and put Cardinal,Bruesiwitz,Kendall Gill and Shon Morris on his staff.

WOJO is not coming to the U. He will be coach K's right hand man, now that Collins is off to NU.

I think Capel get's it before Wojo does.

I'd rather have Wojo before Jeff...I know, Jeff has at least been a HC and terrific winning PCT at VCU, but not as good at OK which everyone is aware of. Jeff and Wojo are good recruiters.

If these guys are your mark for being successful coaches available, I'll list you some guys as successful as these guys.

#1: Anthony Grant
#2: Ben Jacobson
#3: Tony Bennett
#4: Anthony Evans - Norfolk State
#5: Michael White - Louisiana Tech
#6: Dave Rice - UNLV (not much experience, but I like as much as some guys on your list)
#7: Andy Kennedy
#8: Bryce Drew
#9: Marvin Menzies (Pitino Assistant, done a nice job at New Mexico State)
#10: Greg McDermott (not my cup of tea, but I like him more than some on your list)
#11: I wouldn't count him, but again compared to Scott Nagy. . . John Giannini from La Salle

I'm sure i'm missing about a dozen more. If you are cool with considering guys like Nagy and Paulsen successful, there are probably 30 coaches left who are similar to them (including my list and yours).

My head says that I agree with you, I just don't know if I can get myself to cheer for that annoying PG who received tons of accolades for slapping the floor.

I was talking about the Duke job I want Wojo for the Gophers job.

Not to mention, he along with Shane Battier made flopping an art form at Duke.
