I think people don't realize how good our offense will be next year. It will be talented, deep, and experienced. Look how good we'll be.

O-line - With 13 linemen back who have playing experience, and they are red shirt sophmores thru seniors. NEVER in the history of Gopher football will our O-line be so deep. Our O-line will be completely different this year. Davis will make a huge difference. This line will be getting back to the dominate o-lines we used to have.

Tight ends - This will be the weakest area on offense. We will have a solid starter in Tow. He'll give us 15 to 20 catches this year. If Lair and Hageman step up then it could be a very good set of tight ends.

Quarterbacks - Weber, Pittman, Nance, Lueck, Gray, and Alipate. NEVER in the history of Gopher football have we come close to having a group of quarterbacks this good. Weber will have a stellar year with Pittman coming in for wildcat formations. Weber will take a huge step forward.

Wide Recievers - Decker, Hayo, Ben, Green, Smith, Mcknight, and Bradon. NEVER in the history of Gopher football will we have a recieving crew so talented.

Running Backs - Bennett, Shady, Eskridge, Whaley, Limpscomp and a four star. It will be a young but deep crew of running backs. We will finally have the homerun hitters that we need in Limpscomb and Whaley. Plus we have a good pass catcher in Bennett. It will be a very good group of running backs.

We probably will be known as the greatest show on turf. Maybe not that good but a we'll be a lot better on offense then people think. While on defense it may be a different story. I HOPE Cosgrove proves me wrong.

Love what we have at the skill positions, but I think our success ultimately boils down to how well the OL can pass-protect and open holes for the RBs, and the OL was not a strength this season. Hopefully a year of maturation plus the additions of Carufel and Wills will kick it up several notches.

our offensive line was destroyed this year and all of sudden it will be fine

dam......i wish

Gold04, the stench of our offensive disaster against Iowa has not left my nostrils enough for me to do other puke up vast quantities in your general direction.

Guys who have never played one second of college football represent great depth at QB? You speakith in poo poo.

I think they'll be fine, they were really young last year, they'll have had another year of strength and conditioning, another year of adjusting to playing at this level, they'll be adding 2 new starters in Carufel and Wills. I don't see how it's possible that they won't be improved.

oh they will be improved but we are coming from the depths of suckdom........so that doesnt translate to we will be fine at all

If, by the end of the season, we can look at our OL and say they are average, then that will be a huge improvement.

Looking at every position on offense, we should be better than last year, except maybe TE. Obviously the OL should be better with more experience and a few additions. Weber should improve, if not there is Gray. RB spot should be much better, and we should have one of the better WR core's in the conference. It is an offense that should put up 25+ per game but they need to do it consistantly. I will be very disapointed if the offense doesn't improve much over this last season.

goldy74 open your eyes troll. adding a guy that started at ND as a sophmore can only make us better. he also had a year to practice and a year with mark hill. we dont know about wills yet but his tape and size are very impressive. you cant teach experience and even though we werent very good on the OL last year does that mean we wont be this year? NO! they were undersized last year and very young. they can only get better and they will

ND= NDSU or Iowa State. Being a back-up at Notre Dame proves nothing.

I hope Carufel has tons of success here.

That said, his brief time as a starter at Notre Dame means that he was on national television. Nothing more. He still has to prove his worth as a starter in the Big Ten. And that's a much bigger deal than pretending like you're playing big-time college football on NBC.

We should be excited about this team. Projecting them though is problematic as we'll need to see them bring it all together first. And I'm not quite sure about the WR, depth sure but it's still only Decker that's proven anything.

But this is the most solid team we've put together in my life, how long will it take them to gel on the field? That's the real ?

I'm really looking at 2010 as the year for this team.

At age five your writing is nothing short of remarkable. Keep up the good work.

Two questions.

What are you on?

And

Will you share?

goldmember - ND might not be what they once were but if you are still starting for them that means you must have some serious talent. just because their talent is down doesnt mean they arent pulling in top talent every year

at 74 we are counting down the days until you arent with us anymore

It what's up front that counts

Coach Davis holds the keys to the offense. He will need to settle on his starting 5. They need reps in the informal drills, in the spring, over the summer, again in fall practice. Even the best offensive lines we have had, and that means Eslinger and Setterstrom were not enough when push came to shove. The only time I can remember a running play win a big game, was Gary Russell's run at the Big House. And from all acounts its was a throw away call, something to get some yardage so we could punt. But execution, and a lulled defence yielded the win.

I hope we see some hybrid of the spread meets power. USC, Alabama, oh yeah that's where Davis was.

I think you guys are being hard on him. What kind of Gophers fans are you? I think that while he is being a little over optimistic, he makes some very valid points. Last year i believe we had an o-line consisting of only Freshmen and Sophmores(correct me if im wrong), so an extra year of work plus some additions will be HUGE for our offense, which was lacking consistant play from the o-line.

Tight End play will be alright, i forgot, we lost Simmons didn't we.......

Weber is bound to look great this year. I think that he had a better Freshman year than he did this last year and with a number of new weapons to throw to and with an upgraded line, i expect some good play out of him.

Duane Bennett is going to be back and healthy next year along with a few other backs with game experience (Salamon and Eskridge). Can't rule out a few of our incoming freshmen who are bound to get the ball. Who knows, maybe one of them will make a big impact.

I am just excited as hell to see our recievers in action. I dont know too much about Carpenter other than he is supposed to be damn good. Line him up across Decker??? Throw Brandon Green in there. He was really starting to produce some big plays at the end of the year.

I guess we will have to wait and see what the offense can do, but i think we are going to see an impressive offense, even if it is not quite as deep as gold04 said.

Offensive Line

I have to think, as bad as the offensive line was this year, they will be much improved next year. First off, if I remember right, we were very banged up. So hopefully we'll be a lot healthier. The injuries led to a lot of young guys getting experience. That should bode well for some good competition this spring and in the fall. I think the combination of experience and competition will mean we'll have at least an average offensive line next fall.

So what are reasonable Big Ten expectations for the 09 offense? For starts, I would like to see us finish at least 5th in total offense which was about 360 yds/game in 2008, an improvement from 282 yd/game. And reverse our 08 17 pts scored and 26 pts allowed. And average 31 minutes time of possession. But we need help from the D as well.

There are many questions that go unanswered at this point. I still think that our OL is two years away from being a better than average Big Ten OL.

I hope you are right, but next years WR crew is nowhere near the best we have ever had-not even close. Not even remotely close. I hope I'm wrong though...

The OL is a concern. They played very poorly in almost every Big Ten game last season. However, the OL is one area that usually gets much better each year they play together. Another year of getting stronger and another year of technique should help them. Davis wouold appear to be an upgrade in coaching. Iowa's OL was one of their weak points in '07, but one of their strong points last season.

QB we are fine. RB we will be ok if Bennett and Whaley are healthy. WR, we need better play from our sophomores. Decker will be good, but we need more speed opposite of him. Hayo is key. TE, Simmons is gone but not a great receiver. Lair or Hageman must step up.

OL is a major concern for me. I don't know if there will be new terminology, new technique, new adjustments to certain blitzes etc etc. Hopefully the injury bug doesn't stall the learning curve.

Our O-line will be deeper and have more experience, but technique is going to have to improve.

Maybe I'm just overly optimistic but I think our WRs will be very good this year. Everyone is back, plus we're adding Hayo and Keise. I expect at least one of the sophomores to step up this year, and Kuznia will contribute. Decker should be at 100%.

If Hayo plays to his potential, we could have a very dangerous passing game. We'll see what happens though.

Pittman was finally useful in the bowl game as well. Don't count out his contributions in the passing game.

The WR's have the potential to be very good, but we saw how long it took green to make an impact.

Even though all the pieces seem to be there, it's really just too much to pull together too quickly. I'm just hoping for better balance and a solid framework for 2010. If our record is the same next year as this, I think that's just fine.

I hope you are right, but next years WR crew is nowhere near the best we have ever had-not even close. Not even remotely close. I hope I'm wrong though...

Tiki-I'm curious to hear what year you think we had better receivers.

IMO, Eric Decker is as good as we've had for a number one WR. The two that are in the ballpark are Ron Johnson and Tutu Atwell. However, when Decker leaves campus he will likely have team records in receptions & yards (Decker thus far 177 rec. 2,361 yds, 19 TD's Johnson 198 rec. 2999 yds, 31 TD's).

I could maybe go with 1996 when we had Tutu Atwell, Ryan Thelwell, and Luke Leverson. However, Leverson was unproductive as a freshman so just having him on your roster doesn't mean much. We didn't have any WR on first or second team all Big Ten in 1996 so it is hard to give the nod to 1996.

Tutu was much better in 1997 when he was a second team All Big Ten selection but Leverson was still a year away from coming in to his own.

In 1998 and 1999 we had the combination of Leverson & Ron Johnson which is probably as good of a 2 WR combo as we have had (Thelwell/Atwell 1996, Decker/Wheelwright 2007).

Nobody really knows how good Brandon Green will end up being but I personally think as a freshman he looks as good as all of the receivers mentioned above except Ron Johnson. Hayo Carpenter is also a bit of a mystery but he comes in as the most highly touted Juco WR since Paris Hamilton . I do agree with Gold04 that this is the deepest WR corps that we have ever had but it remains to be seen whether Brandon Green or Hayo Carpenter can step up and be the complement to Eric Decker. For an outside opinion, Big Ten Tonight ranked our returning WR corps as the best in the Big Ten followed closely by Illinois.

Pittman was finally useful in the bowl game as well. Don't count out his contributions in the passing game.

I think it will be interesting to see how much Brandon Green improves in year 2. With Decker playing baseball, Green will get the benefit of being the #1 WR all through spring practice. I think all of the returning WR's will benefit from having such a small group which means more reps and more personal attention from the coaching staff.
