State Journal Register recommends Illini talk to Coach Kill when Beckman is fired

Illinois needs to find a coach with a record of building a program, winning record, up for a challenge and be able to win in the Big 10. Has a staff who can attract talent to Illinois. Who is available and would take and do the job? My first call would be to Akron, asking to talk with Terry Bowden. I would also have a call to Tommy. Also making my list of calls Jim McElwain CSU, I might even reach out to The Sweater Vest.

I know of a coach who has experience program building in the B1G. His lifetime coaching record is excellent. And he's won a Natty....

They have gone to the Rose Bowl twice in the last 15 years

Actually, they only went to the 2008 Rose Bowl once when they backed in tied for second place in 2007. In 2001, they went to the Sugar Bowl because the National Championship game was being played in the Rose Bowl.

Oops, you're right. In spite of winning the big ten in 2001, they did go to the sugar bowl

Has anyone seen the U o I? I have. Not much there in the middle of nowhere between Champaign and Urbana. Doesn't compare to our Twin Cities and state - No way. Jiminy Christmas!

This. Jim Delaney would frown on it severely. Still it can work out for Kill. Step 1, take Illinois' call. Step 2, have agent call Doogie. Step 3, get raise. Known as pulling a Hoiberg.

It IS generally frowned upon, but just last year Sarkisian did it going from Washington to USC. So it can happen.

Hey, I hear what you're saying, but remember Jer is Country...this might appeal to him.

Can't, won't happen. Jerry has too much invested here. I heard his wife speak recently and she just loves Minnesota. Here's a direct quote from her, "if he (Coach Kill) wanted to move again, he'd have to take me kicking and screaming to make that happen." lol-any husband knows, if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

If a random hypothetical lower-level coach and/or assistant had the choice of jobs between Illinois and Minnesota, the overwhelming majority would choose Illinois. But the jobs are similar enough that a sitting Minnesota coach isn't going to leave to take the Illinois job, or vice-versa.

I've always been afraid what happened to Illinois in 2001 is what would happen to Minnesota when they finally break through and win the Big Ten. Winning the conference and playing in a major bowl would be awesome, but it would feel a little empty if we didn't spend New Year's in Pasadena because it's a year the Rose Bowl hosts a playoff game.

The Illini really had the screws put to them because they were sent to New Orleans to face LSU.

The obvious choice for Illinois is Tim Brewster! He graduated from Illinois.

I've thought about that as well.

What Momma Kill wants, Momma Kill gets!

Not knowing what the hypothetical coaches are looking for in career trajectory, background, type of city they want to live in, etc, etc. I don't agree that stating "the overwhelming majority would choose Illinois" is accurate or verifiable, but I agree with the bolded statement 100%.
