Starting PG next year

The PG position is probably my biggest beef with Tubby.

While stockpiling bigs and wings, he has yet to get even an above average TRUE point guard. As we've seen of late, PG is a crucial position.

Devoe was a combo. Andre Hollins is at best a combo and maybe more of a 2. Austin Hollins may end up being a PG and that would mean he coverts. Mav is an afterthought.

I'd like to see Tubby and the staff focus on getting a TRUE PG.

I'd like to see them 'accomplish' getting a true pg.

I'm just saying, if those guys could get starts as freshmen, Hollins can easily get an opportunity. I think he's easily the best guard Tubby has recruited here, if he produces like his abilities indicate he possibly could, I don't think Tubby will hesitate to give him time out there unless his defense is just plain brutal, which I'm not sure will be the case, he seems like a pretty bright kid who could pick up on stuff quickly.

Plus, starting doesn't really mean a whole lot anyway, Austin Hollins doesn't start, but he's on the floor late in games virtually every game. He plays starter type minutes. That's what I anticipate will happen with Andre Hollins when he gets here if he's really as good as advertised.

This is very true. In the last 3 games Hollins has played 20, 26 and 29 miniutes.

Mav is/isn't a true 'traditional' freshman. He played his senior year of HS at Golden Valley CA and was a 5th year senior at Stoneridge Prep last year. I expect a 5th year prep player to be more ready to contribute than what we've seen from him.

I had forgotten this and I suspect others have as well.

It should be obvious to everyone after watching the last 8 games how important the point guard role is. I'm not sure who will start, but if Welch does commit at least there are three candidates (Hollins, Welch and Mav) for the PG position next fall. Hopefully two of them step up and earn their minutes and become floor leaders next year. After watching Hollins multiple times this season via full game internet feeds, I am impressed with his athleticism, strength, jump shot, ability to get to the rim and his overall court awareness. It may take awhile for these young men to get up to speed early next season, but I think we will see much improved point guard play as next season progresses. As stated above, there are no guarantees that Welch joins the Gophers, but his recent commments lead me to believe there is a fairly good chance he commits this weekend.

Welch

Hope he committs. Don't follow recruiting that much - too much drama, too much hype. Welchs ounds pretty good to me. But I very much suspect that after what he's gone through this year, Tubby will *never* be caught without an option at point guard ever again.......

Just out of curiosity. Who has actually seen Hollins play one minute of basketball? Who has seen him on the AAU circuit? My guess is 99% of the people who post on this board have seen his Youtube and highlight videos his scoring in Tn and assume he's the answer. This comment and the associated "hope" is another example of completely unreasonable expectations. . . . . .
Ridiculous conjecture.

I have, numerous times. He is the real deal, he would be our starter right now - no question. He doesn't have the defensive ability of Nolen, but he's better in almost every other category - right now. He attacks the lane extremely well, he can shoot it, he can shoot free throws, he can distribute the ball.

In fairness to Tubby, I think he thought he had two solid PG options in Al and Mr. Joseph. I would guess that most college squads if presented with losing their first two PG options, would be in a very difficult position.

The third and fourth option usually is not that wonderful!

Thank you! Good report.

I've seen him play a lot as well. I've seen him more at AAU events then HS events and agree he's the real deal and should start but he's definitely more a SG than a PG. My point is all of the people who've NEVER seen him play and yet he's our guy at the point. Just makes me laugh more than anything.

No chance of Austin Hollins ever seeing point guard minutes for the Gophers. He isn't even a shooting guard. Austin is a small forward in the same light as Rodney. Neither can shoot a lick, but both can be defenders and are athletic. Hollins is already better than Rodney imo with his defense ability. We need a "real" PG and a "real" SG next season.

NEVER underestimate unsubstantiated opinions of GopherHolers! :blah: :blah: :blah:

Honestly, what I want is a combo backcourt, two guys who can be interchangable. You don't NEED to specifically have a true point guard to win in college basketball. You just need good guards, period. That's our issue right now. We only have really one guard out there we can count on. Before January we had a nice three guard rotation, and that's what you want. That's why I'm hopeful in grabbing a JUCO and Andre, and them being able to tandem with Chip or Austin and create a nice guard rotation. Andre doesn't have to play exclusive point for us to have success IMO.

It's rather funny how Al Nolen has been romanticized on the board since we've seen what it looks like w/o him. When he was playing it was a 40/60 love/rip deal. Now that he's not playing it's 90/10.

It's true, absence does make the heart grow fonder. I don't necessarily agree though that a 3 guard rotation w/o a true point makes us better. I remember watching Joseph/Nolen/Hoffbarber play together and still thought when Nolen was out, we struggled mightly especially with Joseph running (or whatever you called it) the point.

But when we had Joseph, Westbrook, and Hoff last year it looked pretty decent. It's not ideal to not have a true point guard out there though, I agree. I just think if we do land Welch, in combo with Andre, it can work where Andre may play some point, but he won't be forced to play all his minutes there.

People say that Tubby won't start a freshman, but look at his choices. Chip and Austin Hollins will not be playing point guard. That leaves the only realistic choices at Mav and Andre Hollins. I believe Andre will start over Mav. If we get Welch or another point guard recruit then that may change.

Zach Lofton

Has a few D1 offers and one coming very soon in the Big 10 glad to see him at the game today sitting behind the Gopher bench is that considered a look who knows????:p

I will give you an example. Everyone on this board thought Zach Lofton didn't deserve a look (me included) because of comments based on seeing him play. Yet a kid from Tn who nobody has seen is going to start for the Gophers next year? Bet there is a board somewhere praying they get Lofton for the exact same reasons we think Hollins is the answer......because they haven't seen him play enough.

Ridiculous conjecture.

If Hollins is as good as Lofton he should start period...FYI Lofton has offers from schools that play the gophers twice a year yea thats right BIG 10 wish the best for the gophers and young Zach but someone owes me a million dollars when he hits 50 on us.

It's my fault. I brought up Lofton's name. Don't blame yourselves..... I will take the mandatory 3 hour ban from GH as punishment.

If Welch signs with us, if I were a betting man I'd say he'll be one of our starting guards.

I'm pretty sure I read that they want him to start next year, and considering Tubby's preference for experience, I'm pretty sure he would.

I don't have the same history of following Tubby as some on here but based on what I have seen in 4 years, Maverick will start game 1 and by January it will be someone else, but even in game 1 someone else will probably be finishing the game. And finishing the games is more important to me than starting.

Mav reminds me a lot of Aaron Robinson. When he came into the program, everyone thought he was crap. By his senior year, he was starting and contributing well to an NCAA tournament team. I see Mav contributing most his junior and senior seasons.

You probably win the bet. My dream is that Hollins knocks Tubbys socks off and takes over from day one. Reality is different most likely. If Mav wins the spot- it's time for a bottle of Tums.
