Even though Minnesota high schools rank well below national average producing DI football recruits, these percentages didn't add up for last Saturday's Iowa-Minnesota game in Iowa City. In the Hawkeyes 12-0 victory, of the 44 'line of scrimmage' STARTERS, 12 represented Minnesota high schools and only six represented Iowa high schools. I'm very shocked about this ratio, but it is a fact. Three of these Minnesota starters played for Hawkeyes, the only offensive being center Rafael Eubanks from St. Paul's Cretin-Derham Hall. Defensively, the Hawkeyes were led by Cretin-Derham Hall's DE Broderick Binns and Caledonia's Karl Klug who each registered a tackle for a loss in the 2nd quarter to contribute the Hawkeye shutout victory. Not one Iowa native was listed as a Gopher starter. As I've said, kids out of Minnesota high schools can play the game, as Cretin-Derham Hall's senior OT Seantrel Henderson is the No. 1 recruit of any position colleges nationally are going after.
HOWEVER: Brandon Wegher (Sioux City, IA) would likely have started for Hawkeyes Saturday if not for nagging injuries, as would WR Eric Decker (Cold Spring, MN) for Gophers. Wegher rushed for game's only TD, so technically Iowa had seven (not six) natives play a significant role Saturday. So if not for injuries, 13 starters would have represented Minnesota high schools Saturday and seven represent Iowa high schools.
BUT REMEMBER, if Iowa State and Northern Iowa were in the Big 10, then Iowa high schools outnumber Minnesota high schools 26-18 when it comes to starters in Nov. 21 games. And before you make fun out of Northern Iowa, remember it gave Hawkeyes a better game in Iowa City than Gophers. And Iowa State has beaten Iowa seven of last 12 and won at Nebraska this year. So when it comes to high school football, give the edge to Iowa over Minnesota because Iowa has two million less people, so therefore, Iowa per-capita has better youth football all-around, even though Minnesota with James Laurinaitis (Wayzata), Marion Barber (Wayzata), Larry Fitzgerald (Holy Angels), Matt Birk (Cretin Derham Hall) along with Cretin's Michael Floyd (Notre Dame, WR) and Henderson may have the edge over Iowa when it comes to "Select" players.

GRAND TOTAL NATIVE STATE HIGH SCHOOLS THAT CONTRIBUTED STARTERS FOR IOWA, MINN, WIS, NORTHWESTERN, IOWA STATE, NORTHERN IOWA, MISSOURI & NOTRE DAME ON SATURDAY, NOV. 21:
IOWA-26
MINNESOTA-21
WISCONSIN-10
(I didn't factor in Drake, South Dakota State, South Dakota, Northern Illinois, North Dakota or North Dakota State, where you would have several more from Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota)
Anyway, pretty respectable number for Minnesota, so maybe Tim Brewster should take some blame for the Gopher football woes? I still blame it on lack of enthusiasm from University of Minnesota administrators.
