Star Tribune's Rayno adds her own story to Teague scandal

Ms Rayno was put in an impossible situation not of her own choosing. Her deciding to handle it how she did should not open her to any criticism from anyone. It's easy for those of us with nothing at stake to say she would have been fine because of the evidence, she had the power of the paper behind her, or other victims would have been saved. But in reality, none of us know how it would have turned out, even with 20/20 hind-sight, and that is unfair and too much to lay at her feet. She did the best she could, made the decision she thought was right, and went about her job as professionally as possible. Kudos to her for that, and also for being willing to reopen that wound and add her name and story to this guys list of issues and offenses .

Seems more like it was about MR Teague being horny and drunk. Also seems like he struck out and was not able to control his victims.

All in all, incredibly bad behavior.

Let's let this play out before speculation gets out of hand.

BigTenChamp is way off base on this.

I challenge you and anyone else who has a problem with what I wrote to research Minnesota statute 363.a4 and then respond to this thread. Sexual harassment is a crime, in my state it is a serious felony. Rayno is a journalist. A journalist. Journalists are tasked with uncovering wrongdoings and speaking truth to power. I'm glad that she went to her superior at the strib, but she has a much louder box from which to shout this crime committed against her. Does anyone really believe that if rayno had written a piece disclosing this scumbag's actions that she would have been ignored and shunned? With the evidence that she had? Anyone?

This, times 1000. THANK YOU.

Not "ignored and shunned", but have you not seen some of the terribly immature things written about her on this board whenever one of her articles is posted?

Without the benefit of hindsight, Amelia's allegations are pretty weak sauce on their own. They do help complete the picture of Norwood's "issues" when added to the more shocking behavior from last week.

Was Teague inappropriate and boorish towards Amelia? Affirmative. Does this revelation compound our poor opinion of Teague? Yep. We're the more concerning aspects provable in court, eg the possible groping, etc. Nope.

So as this young lady knew she could have been taken off her beat, possibly derailing her preferred career path. Her other option was to quit, which I gather is a luxury most journalists don't have these days.

Here's your answer BigTenChamp. Though you were maybe not trying to, you were making her out to be at fault when she was actually a victim.

let's talk about these two women. 1. amelia rayno, a female sports journalist at one of the top newspapers in the nation. 2. a nameless employee of the university.

amelia could have written the pulitzer prize winning expose on the athletic director who liked to harass female sports journalist and nameless and faceless university employees. instead she decided to preserve her job and say absolutely nothing.

nameless employee 2 has no job security and no national outlet to which others would flock to back her up. she still chose to out this sexual predator at the risk of her job and livelihood.

turns out, nameless employee comes out to bring this sexual predator down and before the ink is dry on the story amelia remembers that this happened to her.

i don't care if people try to make me into the monster, if amelia had written this story in 2014, a lot of damage could have been prevented.

You aren't a monster, but you are clueless. Amelia was a young woman in her first job in her field. She was NOT in a position of power. She asked advice of those who were more experienced in the field and was given conflicting advice. She first decided to "let it go," then reported it to HR. Even the HR department "at one of the top newspapers in the nation," wasn't sure of what to do. If she had written this story in 2014, my guess is few would have believed it and she would have damaged her just-starting career.

I take it back; clueless is too kind.

Yes....sexual harassment IS a crime. But poking and making comments are difficult to prove. Proof is important. Unfortunately........Teague was in a much more powerful position. You don't seem to get that.

She was not in a position of power? I don't live in Minnesota, yet I've heard of her. I've read her stuff. I think that she is a decent writer. As a matter of fact, in the last four years I have been more impacted by her writing than anything that Teague has done or said. That does not mean that she has more power than Teague, but that is to say that painting her as a wilting flower who lives and breathes at the whim of the power brokers of the twin cities media is a little sexist.

But let's take a different slant at this ms. Radner. Let's say that your daughter or the daughter of any one posting here, had been the victim of a serious crime -- A CRIME -- that you would have counseled her to go to give it up after she had reported the CRIME to her superiors. Like the strib ombsbudsmen had looked into it and decided that your daughter should cool it. How would you advise your daughter who is a journalist, and who has the power to alert others to act, even if it meant losing her job?

I want to live I a world in which people do the right thing regardless of whether they end up end up printing copy for JC penny ads.

Dear ****ing lord. Are you reading my words? Never did I say that Teague was not in a more powerful position than rayno. That is, in fact, the definition of sexual harassment. In fact what I said was that rayno had a very prominent outlet to expose this crime and instead chose to suppress it for the sake of her own job. These are her own words. Then, when someone with a much smaller outlet available to expose this monsters crimes comes forward, rayno writes a piece about how she ignored these same crimes years before and I am supposed to applaud her strength?

N.B. I am very supportive of the woman with the most to lose, the woman who came out and said enough. I also think that Teague is a criminal and a bastard -- I have been clear on these points. I just don't think that rayno is brave for waiting until the coast is clear and Teague has been pilloried.

but she is a reporter at one of the top 20 newspapers in the country. the person who exposed teague, the real hero that amelia seems to be trying to attach herself to, had not a lot of power at all. no nationwide outlet, no weekly column, and no name recognition.

Those women perhaps had less to lose as well. How many female college basketball beat reporters are there at top 20 newspapers in the US? None of us are in her shoes and can judge the variables she had to weigh.

In this case, Norwood's actions were not a crime. There is no employer or superior relationship with an employee here.

I do believe The Trib had a legal obligation to stop the harassment by Teague. Maybe someone familiar with MN law can explain. As Amelia explained, she and the Trib collectively decided to take the least disruptive path in hopes it would blow over after she made it clear she was not interested. For those saying she should have come forward to "save others", how was she supposed to know this was anything other than a strange crush by a creepy old man?

Ok folks. I'm sorry if I came off as impugning Amelia's character and if Amelia happens to be reading, I apologize. I was wrong.

As a young reporter she did what she thought best when in a risky situation with her career. A young reporter who makes these kinds of allegations, even given they are true, could end up with a reputation as a reporter you want to avoid. In the world of testosterone powered sports she might well have ended up on the Home & Garden page. She did exactly what she should have done for her career. I can't begin to imagine how much pressure she felt. Well handled young lady.

Since the awful Souhan article a couple years ago, I've boycotted strib clicks (like many others on GH) so I won't read Rayno's article. From reading the posts in this thread it appears a strib reporter has written a story with the sole purpose of piling on. Teague is gone. Whether or not Rayno -- or any number of other women coming forward -- had some awful experience serves no purpose, except in this case to capitalize on the sensationalism of an exposed scandal.

So she's not allowed to share her story because she wasn't first? Come on.

The primary purpose is to help paint a more complete picture of Teague. He may still have supporters that either 1) don't believe the original two women, or 2) believe them but think it was an isolated mistake. With her story, these two are a lot less likely.

It's not just about piling on...

Some pretty cool people on this site. As per usual. Glad I don't know many of you personally.

the fact that you are criticizing her for "piling on" without reading the article on a topic like this, shows all one needs to know about your personal character.

Get the feeling this salacious tale is just getting started. Someone else at U had to know, and did nothing.

My Question...

Did these type of come-ons work for the "Colonel"?

Sadly, this pathetic man must have had some success.

There has got to be a few students on campus that Norwood took a licking...er..liking to as well. This is just the start.

Here you go, a DailyGopher link with the contents of the article:

I'd hope that you now have absolutely no excuse for your ridiculous take on this situation.
