Staff composition is recruiting/retention trouble

New coaches (minus DL) were introduced to the team last night. What many black players walked away talking about was the lack of racial diversity on the new staff. With all of Kill's talk about "his guys who have been with him for a long time," what does it mean when neither of the two black coaches on his previous staff are coming to MN? What will it mean when Tommy Hammock is the only black coach retained from Brew's staff? What does it mean when one of the least effective or respected coaches, Cosgrove, is kept, but super-recruiters like Cross are gone? What does it say about Kill when he doesn't understand that black parents want their sons to be surrounded by a coaching staff that not only understands football, but relates to the life experiences their sons are having? What is the message this new staff sends to black players about how Kill is a "player's coach?" Which players? No black coaches on defense? Seriously? Is this 1965?

The players won't say it in interviews, because they know it is not PC, but this all white + Hammock staff is disappointing and shows that Kill is clueless about recruiting elite black players. Talk about a bad first impression. Maybe Kill didn't understand that this is the BT. One of the first things that black families look at when a college contacts their son is the composition of the staff. I suspect that a good number of current black players would never have come to MN to play for this new staff (especially with no proven track record of success at this level). Good luck with that "speed" recruiting plan.

I'm sure I'll be unpopular for pointing out the new "white" elephant, but what the hell. So glad that Maturi is helping our new coach understand these important issues. :(

Iowa has 2 black coaches, and Wisconsin has 3. So you're saying if we get one more, we will be within the standard big ten black coach threshold?

Oh, and one other thing

You asked:

"What will it mean when Tommy Hammock is the only black coach retained from Brew's staff?"

I can answer that.

It will mean two things:

1. That Lewis, Cross, and Lee were poor coaches and/or recruiters not worth retaining.

2. That four white assistants (Butler, Davis, Watson, and Horton) also weren't retained.

Northwestern also has two black coaches in its main ten.

What is the makeup of the pool of candidates composed of?

I would guess 10 to 20 percent?

Whoa, whoa, whoa Cosgrove is being retained? You've got to be kidding me. That is a major disappointment if true.

As for the rest of the post (again assuming it is true) there is a lot of validity to what is being said, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. Having only one African American on staff would look terrible and it would effect recruiting.

So sick of this obsession of race. Just put together a staff with the best damn coaches you can find and call it a day. You know what else is attractive to a recruit than the race of the coach? The chances of winning. Win > Race I refuse to believe that a black recruit would rather lose surrounded by black coaches than win with predominately white coaches.

One thng it might mean with Cosgrove being retained is that coach has a heart. Maybe he said we'll try this guy for a year so that he keeps his health insurance until his son is healthy again.

What a bullsh!t post. This is race-baiting at it's worst. You have no idea what you are talking about, and your lack of knowledge and insight is stunning.

We have no idea what the composition of Coach Kill's staff will be. Saying that he has to hire more black coaches and not retain some of his white coaches to promote diversity is flat out RACIST.

Please take your BS somewhere else.

And, it would likely be as a LB coach (I would guess). We know it won't be as defensive coordinator, as that position is already filled. In fact, having a guy like Cosgrove with a wealth of experience as a coordinator serve as a position coach is probably a plus.

First of all, I don't have any reason to believe that the original post is factual, but it still could be an issue. It all depends on the individuals involved. Some kids are going to be automatically concerned about race, some automatically will not, and some might have some reservations but will wait and see what kind of men these new guys are. There's way too much individuality involved to get concerned about it. By definition, we will end up with a team that feels comfortable with our coaching staff.

It really gets old the whole race card being played!!!! I'm sure he retained and picked coaches according to ability, not race. Parents that want their sons to be surrounded by coaches of their race are the racists IMO. I say if a kid isn't going to come because there aren't enough coaches of color on the staff, they can go elsewhere.

What MNRideorDieChick did here, or attempted to do, was incorrigible. She should be thoroughly embarrassed.

It's this sort of thought process and post/comment that shows who the real racists are.

So when did all of the staff get revealed? Did I miss something? Is Hammock actually getting retained? If this is all speculation/hearsay, this is seriously the worst thread I have ever read.

What a bunch of PC bullcrap. But of course you know that don't you.

If true, this could be a problem (I have my doubts that it is true, having not heard this from any reputable source, which suggests that not only were you there, but you reported it before absolutely everyone else on the entire Internet - "doubtful" rather understates my feelings on this post). These issues can be far touchier than many people realize. Though I must admit, I'd be more upset at the retention of Cosgrove than at anything else (and another point of contention - how can this be the case when, of the two assistants we know for certain are coming, one of them is a defensive coordinator?). That being said, I think we should let Kill pick the coaching staff he feels gives the team the best chance to win.

I feel like Cosgrove would take it as an insult to be demoted to a position coach. I hardly believe he would be retained but also at a big pay cut and position cut; that seems fishy.

I have a sneaking suspicion the Chick knows what she is talking about, and though we might not like it, we can't deny that race is a factor in every aspect of American life now. We used to aspire to a color-blind society (or we said we did), but society can only be as color-blind as the individuals of whom it consists, and we definitely know that on an individual level race is a major issue.

So what is the usual number of people of color on a coaching staff these days?

GET A LIFE!!!!

Gasp!

MNRideorDieCHICK,

We also dont have any female coaches. We dont have any latinos either. Oh crap, no Asian/Pacific Islanders either. No Russians, nobody under 18, nobody living below the poverty line.

What should we do? Fire the competent coaches that we have and want to be here in the name of social injustice? Sorry, but playing the race card is BS.

FWIW, I had no idea that Tim Cross was black until this thread.

Are you suggesting that there aren't any competent blacks in the coaching business?

What are you saying?

Confuscious say "person who claims racism factor has $hit for brains".

I really hate how these posters end by saying "I know everyone is going to rip on me" as if they believe they're some type of martyr. News flash: you aren't Martin Luther King Jr - you're a poor man's Jesse Jackson at best.

Cross may be a super-recruiter, but after watching the D-line play this year, I seriously wonder about his coaching ability. Neither Kirksey nor Edwards took a step forward in my estimation and they both had a fair amount of experience under their belts. I'll give Cross a pass on the play of the DEs, because they weren't nearly as experienced.

Agreed!!!

Sounds like there was a team meeting last night and maybe the coaches have been announced.
Don't shoot the messenger.
