St Kate's would shutter its doors before merging with St Thomas. The schools have ended much of their cooperation as St Thomas cares very little about Social Justice while St Kate's cares about those students who cannot support themselves on their own. This is why nursing, social work, ASL/Interpreting are so strong at St Kate's. They empower women to make a difference in their communities. Their vision and mission is contrary to St Thomas's narcissism.

Just Incredible what Butler did with a remarkable run of coaches, limited resources etc.. what Jay Wright has done at Villanova. Behind the scenes St. Thomas is building in roads with a coach who is seen as a next level winner.

First sentence is true. Beyond that, this is some of the biggest pile of manure I've read on this site in a long time. If you have not been there in a while, St. Kate's matches St. Thomas narcissists at least one to one.

Yes. Financially strong universities taking over weaker ones. Weak ones don't want it, but have no choice. As colleges and universities begin to get weeded out with fewer students and less third party money coming in, look for it to happen regularly for the next twenty years or so.

U of North Dakota, back when it was still a DII school, got a $100M out of one guy, for the hockey team, and the building of their arena, which to this day I believe is still the largest and nicest college hockey arena that is mainly intended for college hockey (not a pro arena).

Interesting side note to your comment about UND Hockey. I worked on "The Ralph" hockey arena. When they were pouring the concrete floor (for the sheet of ice), I put a quarter in the center of the crease of I think is the south goal. (Directions elude me at this point of my life). The Gophers played an exhibition game there the first year it opened. The Gophers annihilated them and scored the very first goal in that arena in the goal I put that quarter in.

Also Ralph paid many millions extra (he owned casinos in Vegas and Biloxi, Mississippi), just to include the "Sioux" likeness/emblem everywhere - he was a goalie there from I think Thief River Falls. So if he died and they changed their name, they would need to pay a lot to remove the emblems. I don't know the exact full story on all of that like I'm some sort of insider, but that was pretty common talk back then.

100% correct. Ralph also financed a very nice high school hockey arena in TRF.

Not sure if you had heard this or knew it, but Ralph sent a very threatening letter to the president of UND when they were talking about changing the name at that time, during which the arena was being built. He basically blackmailed them right there in the letter. Said he would pull crews in the middle of winter and let the whole thing spoil, if they changed it. The letter is online somewhere out there in the internet.


Guy was legitimately a Nazi. They found a self-portrait of him dressed up in a Nazi uniform signed something like "To Adolph from Ralphie".


But hey, they got an amazing arena out of it.

I knew he built a very nice arena in Thief River Falls. I think I might have actually been there for my cousin's game a lot of years ago.

Wow, I never knew the Nazi thing. Thank you for that info-I'll research it (not that I'm thankful for the Nazi part but I just always want to learn). You mentioned the blackmailing/threatening. I had heard that, and thought about it but didn't want to post it. I hope I didn't open a can of worms about politics or anything. I really just wanted to mention the Gophers scored the first goal ever there and it was 1,000 percent and unequivocally because of me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to college at UND and was there during the construction of the arena. It opened the year after I graduated (2001 I believe).

Engelstad gave the university $100 million: 50 for the arena and 50 to spend on whatever they saw fit (academic, athletic, or otherwise). Guess where that $50 mil ended up going?

I also got to see the arena before it opened to the public. Some night walking back to campus after the Westward Ho bar had closed. Who would've thought there would be security guards there at 1:30 in the morning? Not my friend and me. He got caught and charged with trespassing, I got away. Like they say, you don't need to be able to outrun the bear, you just need to be able to outrun the person next to you.

Like the guy that survived a grizzly bear attack with only a .22 caliber pistol. He shot his best friend in the leg and made it out safe!!!
Maybe not "best" friend......
