St. Thomas - Are They Hosed?

Because this is a gopher message board
Gophers are a college team.
UST is probably the second most influential college program in the state of Minnesota (Duluth people can debate me)

I think second most is not quite what it seems if ... their fans don't even go to games.

Sort of like if Tanner and I were standing on the same field playing QB ... I'd be the second best QB ... but not sure that means much ;)

I'm confused. TV contract...for what? seriously. 99.998% of Minnesotans do not care anything about st thomas. Seriously.

I'll add this. Why do people keep bringing up st thomas on this message board?

Perhaps they can lower their sights and go DII. The Northern Sun has entirely too many teams already, but one more won't hurt.

The conf can always split.

But honestly, moving to DII is a lateral move. No one gives more of a crap about a DII national trophy than a DIII national trophy. And UST can continue to dominate in DIII, whereas they'd probably only be "good" in DII.

So I think for them it's either DI or stay in DIII.

Does anyone have any insight they can share about St. Thomas? Are they going to end up without a Division to play sports, let alone a conference? Do they still have the money to go Division I? Could they lose their entire athletics department because they have no place to go?

Who cares, move to off topic.

More people nationally known about UST football than Duluth or Winona football.

you could make an argument st Johns

Are you that self conscious that you can’t handle a 2-3 page thread on the future of what was expected to be the 2nd d1 program in Minnesota?

They brought things upon themselves with the football program recruiting way above the level of the MIAC football schools. There was a sense of unfairness and jealousy among many member schools.

Saint Thomas University no longer fit the mold of what a MIAC member school. They are beyond a liberal arts institution.

They dominated the George Durenberger/Pat Weisner All Sports Trophies including winning them twelve straight years.

They got kicked out in football in a year they didn’t win the conference.

totally brought it on themselves though

honestly doesn’t matter why they left. They’re better off out of the MIAC as a d3 independent or anything else.

being associated with Gustavus and hemline gains them nothing

I think more people know about St. Thomas because they got voted out of their league, after that I think the number of people who know about their football program is fairly low. That's also the only reason most of the threads in this forum exist, otherwise we wouldn't say much outside some alum being there or something.

Like me and Tanner, being #2 is like being on another planet.

Beyond that I expressed no feelings about the existence of this thread.

For a guy who doesn’t care you’re pretty adamant at coming and arguing no one cares.

If you don’t care, simply stop posting and the few people who care will keep posting.

You seem pretty sensitive. Are you going to be okay if I post in this every day just to keep it at the top of the page to annoy you?

No they don’t. Almost no one outside of Minnesota knows anything about any of the D3 programs in the state, except when they do something stupid. Provincialism doesn’t equate to actual knowledge.

For a guy who doesn't care... about what?

I think you must be reading my post in the context of some other users posts or something.

There are more d3 football fans nationwide than you think.
You should try going to a football clinic

I think there are like 400 something DIII football teams?

Over 2005 - 2011, the championship game was Mount Union vs Wisc-Whitewater. Then over 2012-2019, there was only one season that the championship game didn't feature at least one of those teams (2016 MHB vs Wisc-Oshkosh ... and MHB beat Mount Union in the semi-final, and those wins are under review for possible vacating).

UST did make it to the championship twice, losing both times.

Some of these guys who play DIII could play Division I in my opinion. Not sure they don't want to deal with the overall toughness of DI as opposed to DIII. Want to be a hero at DIII where on DI they wouldn't be. I don't get excited about DIII especially when they play for a national championship at their level. Doesn't mean anything to me. Almost like a participation trophy in a tournament.

They’ve already been accepted to the Summit. Would be silly not to see it through, at this point. No reason in the slightest that the NCAA shouldn’t at least grant them a waiver to move straight to DI.

Please stop with the st Thomas stuff...they are not anywhere near d-1 level. keep dreaming. This is a stupid thread as 99.99975% of Minnesotans across the state either haven't heard of st Thomas or don't care. The st Thomas thing is a tiny nitch group which 'whines and cries' a lot. NO ONE CARES!!!! Call Dave Lee for a play-by-play of what the band and the fans are doing.

So you're saying there's a chance.....

You obviously care enough to continue posting about st Thomas.

did a Tommie alum steal your girlfriend back in the day or something?

Why would anyone put down St. Thomas. The effort to step up and even attempt a move up is admirable and surely they have tens of thousands of alumni and fans. Hire the right coach, win and you will have new fans and sell out your seats.

It will be good to have another program in the state.

I honestly hope they end up going Missouri Valley or Big Sky for football but I’m going to guess they end up Pioneer League.

I'm sure Caruso would love nothing more.

But I just don't think it's realistic, unless some very rich donors want to make it happen.

The money it would take to even compete with the Dakotas (forget about winning the conference, ain't gonna happen), is just so much money. And FCS has the same visibility as DII/DIII. Very few people care.

If you're going to spend that kind of money, you might as well spend a bit more and go FBS. Is my opinion.

Non-scholarship DI is a much cheaper alternative, and they can win the Pioneer League.

I’m a Tommie and I don’t think it’s a very wise choice to move to D1.
They should stay D3.

I don’t think they have the money to be D1 anything.
I am guessing it is either pioneer league or drop football. I don’t think they’ll drop football

I applaud their move and hope it works out for them. Respect your opinion.

I think St. Thomas’ endowment is pretty huge. Lots of highly successful grads. That school is crazy expensive - it blue blood all the way. They’ve got money.

I don't know how it compares to other states, but I also feel like Catholic education is pretty strong in Minnesota. St Thomas could become the defacto Catholic DI school for the state, or the Cities.

IMO, they already are.
