St. Cloud State football

I recently spoke with the faculty rep to the NCAA at Nebraska-Omaha. He said they are definitely going to move to D-I within a couple years. There's basically going to be no large schools left in the Upper Midwest that are D-II except St. Cloud and Mankato. Both schools completely lack vision when it comes to athletics. And both schools seem completely unaware of how being a D-II school looks when you have student populations of 17,000 and 15,000. The average D-II school student population is about 6,000. SCSU and MSU-M are a joke for holding on to the D-II label for so long. Shame on us for allowing North and South Dakota to have more vision than we do. Minnesota will continue to be the only state around that has one D-I school. Iowa has 4; Nebraska has 2 (will have 3 with UNO); Wisconsin has 4; and both Dakotas have 2 each. Ridiculous!

Personally, as a big Gophers fan I like having only one D1 school(with the exception of hockey) in the state. The Gophers represent the whole state of Minnesota, not just the students, alumni and metro area. I think there could and should be more effort to promote Gopher sports in outstate MN. I also think the football uniforms should have the state of Minnesota(patch) on the sleeves.

We have a pretty unique situation. Time to promote it.

I went to SCSU in the late 80's and agree that few cared at all about football. It was all about hockey then and now I assume. I actually went home to Mpls to go to Gopher football games every home game. I never once saw the Huskies play a football game. It didn't help that most of the football players I knew were complete jerks:clap:

I recently graduated from SCSU in 2008 and it is still a hockey school. That's the only event I ever heard of people wanting to go to besides Homecoming. I heard more people talk about volleyball than football and their volleyball team was really bad (getting better this year). I would love to see them jump to the Summit. Them and MSU should both go, Mankato has a great basketball facility for it.

I understand that sentiment. But I'm also a fan of the state of Minnesota as a whole and I don't like taking a backseat to other states. I think our state looks bush-league when we have only one D-I school, and only one research I doctoral institution. For pete's sake, the state of Mississippi has 4 Division I schools and all of them offer PhD programs. Mississippi is the poorest state in the country.

What's more, I think having vibrant intrastate athletic rivalries is good for the whole state. You mentioned hockey as the exception to your rule. Why couldn't the same be true for basketball? Baseball?

There will always be only one "the U" in MN. I'm proud of that school and proud of my degree from there. But come on, we're a state of 5 million people. Let's open things up a bit.

I believe that among other things, the U in football has suffered from a LACK of in-state
competition- somebody to make them get up in the morning and give that extra effort.
Having a couple in-state schools to compete with could only help the U in football
and other sports. It does, as its been said before, look bush having just one D-I school.

If other colleges in the state move to D-I, the state will still be Gopher Turf. They aren't going to be in the FBS, let alone the BCS. What division there is already there because of hockey. I remember the Bison fans howling because Brewster was speaking in Moorhead, in what they saw as "their turf". But the whole state is our turf, and there's no reason to limit it to the borders. We get some people trying to claim that great expanses of the state are Bison turf, but that's just wishful thinking.

We can surive more D-I schools in the state. It would cut travel costs for the non-revenue sports. I think a game against SCSU, Mankato or UMD would draw more fans than a game against "I have no idea who you are State".

NDSU is a MINNESOTA D1 school people. after reading through this, i dont understand why NDSU isnt embraced more.

65% of students are minnesotan's and I bet 80% of athletes are Minnesotan's.

heck, alot of NDSU Fans are in Minnesota.

Nope, pretty sure it's in North Dakota. I don't think they would let them use the name otherwise.

Because it's in North Dakota, and no one gives a sh*t about North Dakota? I have several friends who are, unfortunately, from North Dakota, and even they don't care about it. The only creatures that care about North Dakota are goats, and that's only to the extent that they want to stay as far away from it as possible. Or, if they're forced to live there, they have to stock up on plenty of prophylactics.

65% of students are minnesotan's

False.

Somewhere between 36-41% of new enrollees the last five years have been "minnesotan's".

and I bet 80% of athletes are Minnesotan's

I took a quick look at the football roster, and I counted 27 "Minnesotan's". I don't care enough to actually look at the other teams, but given that 90-95% of them would have to be from MN to make your "statistics" work, it's safe to say you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

heck, alot of NDSU Fans are in Minnesota

Unfortunately, that's true. Of course, any sane person would rather live anywhere than North Dakota, so it's perfectly understandable that a lot of the goat-pluggers would rather live here.
