This is nuts! I mean everyone wanted Chryst gone, then they go out and get Fickell. I thought wow! What a hire! I mean he took Cincinnati to a near playoff year (and thought they should have) and then the playoffs the next year…and looked like they belonged! They hung with a damn good Bama team for a bit. As someone brilliantly pointed out in a mother thread maybe he’s Frost 2.0, can get the best talent in the smaller conference but can’t translate to the big conference? I mean on paper both schools have recruited better than the Gophers but it hasn’t translated (and hopefully never does!). Was Cryst their Bo Pellini moment where they don’t know what they got until it’s gone?
Let's hope so! They've not only lost most of the secondary, but also the QB room and most of the DL room. Good times!

Yeah Wisconsin is in very big trouble. They are far closer to a Nebraska like fall off than they are to becoming a top tier big10 team. I can’t see them putting a great product out next year with the amount of turnover. Once you fall off and lose that image (which can happen very quickly) it gets tough to rebuild it, especially when you are trying to recruit talent to places like Wisconsin and Nebraska.

This is absolutely stunning. I know that re-branding is difficult (just ask Nebraska post-Solich) and Wisconsin had a well-developed brand of great offensive lines and active punishing defenses, but--especially on offense--the game has changed dramatically (and in fairness P.J. had to realize that as well) and the thunderous ground-and-pound has pretty much left the building at the FBS level. There has to be something else going on in Madison to have this level of defection.

There may be a Nebaska-esque story in the making. I can see Fickell getting bounced and Leonhard coming back ala Scott Frost for the Cornhuskers. We all saw how that turned out. Not saying Leonhard wouldn't succeed, but success wouldn't be guaranteed either.

Actually the trend is to more ground and pound compared to say 5 years ago.

But a different type of running game. The old Wisconsin Deep-I with a FB isn't seen that much anymore (at least by me). Plus, the P/R option with the pass often setting up the run as opposed to vice versa seems more prevalent.

Gone are the days of loaded Wisconsin front 7's and NFL caliber running games. RTB. PJ is in a prime position to leapfrog Wisconsin. This is what Gopher fans have known for decades - there's no intrinsic reason why we can't out-recruit and out-compete (or at least be directly at their level) Iowa and Wisconsin, especially if we can figure out our NIL strategy.

Agree with that. But the trend is more tight ends and running right now

Opposite of of the last 5-15 years where the tend was fewer tight ends and more splits with more passing

I'm starting to think our NIL strategy is figured out and expertly being implemented lol

I’d say we already are on Wisconsin’s level.

Your points are true as well. Seeing a lot more quasi-double TE sets with one of the TEs split out a few yards or in the slot.

Also seeing 3 TEs with run pass option and one TE leaking out for the pass.

It'd sure be nice to see bucky to have a year like Purdue did this year. The program seems to be spinning out of control.
It really isn't. Again, transition to a different offense that needs different skill players.

Seems is the key word here. A bad 2024 (first losing season in forever and missing a bowl game first time in forever), coaching changes, lots of players transferring out. These all could lead to a catastrophic season for them.

On the other hand, maybe Fickell has a ton of great transfers coming in that we don't know about and the new coaches fix things and they get back to a winning record. How is wisky doing in the portal?

I would be very nervous if I was a wisco fan though.

Except now they're reverting back to the old offense even though they brought in players for the new one. It'll be another "new" offense next year so we'll see what happens.

He’s a very talented QB and the staff would take him here. But on the Hole You are suppose to say he stinks because he isn’t on our team and he was at Wiscy. Double whammy.
Not a chance.....as I said previously, he's a walking turnover.....the kind of QB that PJ wants nothing to do with. Remember..."the ball is the program" or one of those sayings.

And as for his freshman season? Was that like 4 years ago???? He was basically asked to leave Miami after being benched.

Yeah but it’s after two years of the first offense not working out. Brewster transitioned offenses as well, it’s not a good thing to have to do that. I don’t believe they wanted many of these players to leave.

No way to know for sure. But I disagree with your take. Big tall guy with rocket arms are usually in high demand even by 7-5 teams.

Looking at their portal ads I think Fickell has a nice class. The issue for them is what kind of foundation are they joining. For example you could debate between us and them who has the better portal class, but the one thing you can't debate is we have a much better foundation of talent for our class to join. It's great to have a top 10-15 class but if there's nothing there to begin with, still going to have depth issues.

Wisconsin's current transfer class is rated a little higher than the Gophers' excellent transfer class. Wisconsin's HS recruiting class is also above the Gophers' HS class (as it is virtually every year). Of course, Wisconsin, because of so many starters transferring out, has more to replace.

PJ has gotten very good at bringing in talented guys (some a bit under the radar) who "mesh"; they buy into the team's identity and culture (a strong culture). I think Fickell has, each year, been bringing in a collection of guys who are good on paper, but so far the "mesh" has been subpar ... maybe in part because Fickell is changing the team's schemes, orientation and culture, and that takes time (and can fail). Or maybe he's a dink? Go Gophers!

I get the feeling most of Wisconsin’s transfer outs are because they want to leave, and Minnesota’s are because they won’t see the field. (I could be wrong).

I think Daniels is our only loss that was going to get a lot of snaps so far. I haven’t looked but seems like they’ve lost a large amount of what were going to be returning starters. They’ve lost 7 guys to other p4 teams vs one for us. They’ve added 5 from p4 teams vs 8 for us. Now I don’t think where you add them from is super important, but I do think where your outgoing transfers end up is an indicator of their talent level to some degree.
