What a disaster for the Badgers. I don’t know their roster but I suspect they need 2 portal QBs now to have enough depth and competition.

They've picked up two portal qb's already (Billy Edwards from Maryland and Danny O'Neill from San Diego State).

Not sure it's a disaster as much as it's expected, to bring in new QB's, when you have a new OC. Both QB's could end up better than our QB's. We will find out in 9 months.

The kid from SDSU had a great true freshmen season. 11 games. 63% completion. 12 Td's and 6 ints. 4 of 6 INT's were on the road agains Boise and UNLV. Now he is only 6' tall.

Not sure I’d call it a great season, they only won like three games I think. He did okay for a true freshman.

Throwing 6 ints. and playing for a team that gave up 30 points a game is probably not his fault. WI is ahead of us with experienced QB's going into 2025. Hope the rest of our roster build is better than their's.

Little surprised ONeill would leave a starting gig to be a back up but badgers will be fine at QB, not elite but you can certainly worse in this league. We picked Edwards last year when he was at Maryland

Supposedly he wanted to play closer to home. Yeah they’ll be fine, but it just feels like a base hit or maybe a double, not a home run. Doesn’t feel like a “those who stay will be champions” type acquisition.

Will Pauling has also entered the portal, Bucky gonna need to find some WRs.

Edwards is pretty mediocre. Has NFL talent at WR and showed a massive regression from what they’d had before. He was good against meh defenses and bad against good ones. His efficiency is not much over what they had last year. That said experience helps. Don’t think there’s much margin for Fickell but does seem like a guy more fit to the spread offense so maybe they’re still going dairy raid

So has wr C J Williams and cb Max Lofy. Love it! Between their schedule next year and all of the losses, maybe the eventual bucky downfall that many of us have predicted for the last 10 years will finally happen - fingers crossed!

It'd sure be nice to see bucky to have a year like Purdue did this year. The program seems to be spinning out of control.

If that were to happen, Fickell would be gone. And Bert would be tempted to leave Illinois.

The entire QB room leaving is either a sign of a major change in offensive philosophy (strongly back to the run) or a sign of an internal cultural disaster. Maybe both!

Their new OC is Jeff Grimes, who spent 2024 in his first year at Kansas. Sounds like Kansas fans were ready to help him pack after their offense got worse, though they did trend up at the end of the season.

Before that, Grimes was at Baylor as OC from 2021-23, where Baylor went from 12-2 and #1 in Big XII in rushing in 2021 to 3-9 and 11 of 12 in rushing by 2023. Looks like his position coach background is OL and run game coordinator roles.

Didn’t basically the entire wr room also leave? Along with a bunch of contributors on the defense?

Remember when everyone every year hypes how good and deep their qb room is? Fickell has always played this spread style. They may run more percentage wise, but kids also don’t want to sit. If you’re going to portal shop heavily every year, a lot of guys won’t sit and wait to compete again and again in todays age.

They did have quite a few guys leave yes. It will be a very different looking team personnelle wise next year

Good point. You reap what you sow.

There's a certain group of dudes who still want to pick a school, go there for 4 years, and matriculate to the NFL. A simpler and proven path and doesn't mean they won't get paid while in college. These likely tend to be more serious students.

Another group is, for whatever reason, more mercenary in the age of NIL and unlimited transfers. When you recruit a bunch of transfers, those guys are more prone to transfer again. It's like divorce is a predictor for more divorce.

Some guys started in the first group and circumstances moved them into the second group. Those are probably the best guys to get from the Portal.

That’s a good observation. Although we don’t know the all the reasons why someone transfers, playing time and extra money are a strong motivators.

I honestly put it at 50-50 Fickell is there for the axe game

Miami of Oh - dogfight but W
Middle Tennessee - win
At Bama - loss
Maryland - pretty pivotal game for both coaches. Maryland usually plays better early in the year. Win though
Bye
At Michigan - loss
Iowa - loss unless Iowa’s QBs are all hurt
Ohio state - loss
At Oregon - loss
Bye
Washington - 50/50
At Indiana - 50/50
Illinois - I gotta predict a loss
At Minnesota

If they’re 1-3 at the first bye. He is done already. Not likely but possible.
If he is 3-5 or 2-6 at the second bye. I think it’s over in the second bye week.
At any moment they hit their 7th loss it may be the end.
9 wins is the absolute ceiling and they aren’t going to hit it.
And the floor is 1 don’t think they’ll hit it, but if they get beat by a decent Miami of Oh program in week 1….lookout.

Seems like there is/was some disconnect among the players and coaches in the secondary there. Lots of transfers from that group.
This is nuts! I mean everyone wanted Chryst gone, then they go out and get Fickell. I thought wow! What a hire! I mean he took Cincinnati to a near playoff year (and thought they should have) and then the playoffs the next year…and looked like they belonged! They hung with a damn good Bama team for a bit. As someone brilliantly pointed out in a mother thread maybe he’s Frost 2.0, can get the best talent in the smaller conference but can’t translate to the big conference? I mean on paper both schools have recruited better than the Gophers but it hasn’t translated (and hopefully never does!). Was Cryst their Bo Pellini moment where they don’t know what they got until it’s gone?
