Can somebody please tell me why we should keep Brewster?

there are still plenty of people on this board doing that. not hard to find. look around.

take a moment and peruse the 500 threads already posted about the subject before starting another redundant thread. kthx

You get rid of him....what is your solution? Keep him and continue to lose to FCS teams and win 7 games a year at best? I mean c'mon....

Some people seem to be under the impression that posters at Gopherhole make the hiring and firing decisions. Chill.

Okay, smart guy, what do you propose? What is your solution?

If Brewster gets fired, whenever that is, and we don't get someone that can run this program and put it to the next level, new AD, Head Coach or whatever we will continue down this road forever. We have got to stay away from these guys that have the potential to be a good head coach and get someone who has proved it at the college level. Some of you have said the U doesn't have the resources to do that, money etc. I don't care what the excuse is that is what has to happen or things will never change.

I just love all the gauntlet tossing that goes on around here.

I've liked, but never completely loved, Brewster for a lot of reasons. The guy has some energy and the program was going nowhere under Mason. Certainly, the situation hasn't improved and I, along with many others, hoped it would. But it hasn't and Brewster's coaching obituary for this stop is probably being written.

There's no defense for yesterday. What do you expect people to say?

It was an embarrassing loss yesterday. He said that. What do you want the guy to do?

He's likely done unless things turn around both quickly and significantly. Is that enough to either get you off the ledge or your blood pressure below 240/160?

Okay, I clearly understand that part of your proposal. But, who do you propose we bring in next? And, please, a legitimate canidate (not Dungy). What makes him qualified / why will he turn the program around quicker than the current regime?

In regard to my view, simply put, I am not yet ready to go back to square one. It takes a while to build a successful program. Too many people in this town think a college football program runs like an NFL franchise - bring in a new head coach, sign a few free agents and look at that, you went from the cellar to a title contender in one year. It just does not work that way at this level.

Brew may (reason - athleticism is much improved, although inexperienced), or may not (does he, and his staff, have the ability to coach the talent up?), be the guy; in my view, I have not seen enough to know. But, given the alternative of starting over from scratch and enduring that pain again, I am willing to wait through the year and possibly the next, to see how it plays out.

I would like to see ONE post of someone defending Brew. Someone just quote ONE post of someone defending Brew in the past 24 hours..

Great post.. +1

How about the one directly above you? And now yours in support of that one too.

Not a Defense...

But an observation...

One of my biggest gripes with the previous regime was Gopher teams (over many years of observations) that were obviously NOT mentally prepared for the opponent at hand. "Coming out flat" was the term of art over this period.

Granted, for the previous regime this was more an issue with "lower tier" B10 play than the cupcakes...but still, it was a huge issue since we did usually beat the cupcakes.

I'm NOT saying this is EXACTLY the same thing in play now, however this is a pattern that has been in place for at least 14 years...the team not properly coached up beyond the opponent's capacity to want the W.

I wouldn't say the play was "flat" yesterday, but certainly not inspired until too late.

Beats me what the answer is...and I'm open to a new HC...but for at least 14 years no Gopher team can think they are better than the other guys before the first whistle blows for each and every game. Maybe other programs can do that, but not Minnesota...at least not yet...but with luck some day.

Anyway, we will not have this problem coming into next Saturday...or so I hope.

Go Gophers! Beat the Trojans!

I completely understand where you're coming from GoldenRose. If they magically go on to win 6 or 7 games and maybe win a couple rivalry games it may change my thinking a little bit. And yea, brew has increased athleticism and speed, but that does nothing if your players are constantly out of position or are undisciplined in their assignments. I'm not saying they need to go after a HUGE name...just get a proven guy that can prepare, coach, and adjust. It's funny because Brew has been fairly decent with adjustments in the past..but nothing was changed yesterday. The middle of the field was open play after play. Anyway, you make a good point but I just am to the point where I don't believe in Brewster anymore...its as simple as that

Here is a defense of Brewster based on 40 years of Gopher history. The coach that follows him is probably not going to be as good of a recruiter as Brewster, and his or her coaching ability is not going to be able make up for their recruiting deficiencies.

If we stick with Coach Brew sooner or later the laws of probability say that he is going to be able to hire a coaching staff that will get the job done.

There is more than a 50% probability that the replacements for Maturi and Brewster are going to he highly unpopular with Gopher fans. Bank on it.

If the recruiting was great, we wouldn't lose to USD.

i would like to see maturi lose his job. i think the bball team and the fball team and all of their issues falls on maturi. brewster and tubby can coach otherwise they wouldnt have had the careers in the respective sports for as long as they have done it. i have been a brew guy but 4th year losing to a dakota is a joke and unless we go undeated the rest of the year brew should be let go. and if tubby doesnt win at least games in the ncaa tourney he and maturi can take the same flight out of minnesota for all i care. i blame maturi #1!

Read my post again. You missed the point. Brewsters recruiting has not been as advertised but I will wager anyone in GopherHole that our next coach will not be as good a recruiter. And futhermore, his coaching ability will not make up for the Gopher's lack of talent. We have many years of history to support my position on this. There is absolutely no reason for any Gopher fan to think that whoever will be making the decisions to replace Maturi and Brewster are going to get it right.

I quit drinking kool aid yesterday. I don't see the players and schemes developing.

It isn't an excuse to say we can't get anyone better. We have to try. But can we get anyone better? Even just for a quick stop enroute to a school with a football program? Minnesota has what Minnesotans want (with the exception of all 6 of us diehard Gopher fans).

I happen to think his recruitng is "OVERRATED". This is a true story, there is a local player from my area who was in the elite group at Wisconsin camp, who was not even getting mail from Minnesota. Yet the 4th or 5th best lineman on the same team who has little to no chance of being a D1 football player is getting mailings because he attended camp and they want to follow him this season. The kid who went to the Wisconsin camp may be a fringe D1 player but, sending mail to kids who have no chance? I think we missed on some other Minnesota kids last year also. I believe whoever we hire, will be a better recruiter, it will be shown by wins on the field. How highly rated was Barber? In addition when I see the postage I think "I wouldn't be spending a grand extra for my seats if the U reduced these types of." mailings

Sorry, nemo, but that was just tough to read. Recruiting isn't important? Okay, if you say so.

How highly rated was Barber?

I know enough about the Gophers to know that not even Mason wanted Barber. Barber and his support team recruited Mason. Mason could coach the first half of football games and that was it. He was a pathetic second half coach and he thought recruiting high school kids was beneath him. He always saw himself as Ohio State's coach where the only job of the head coach was to sort though the high school film and decide which players he wanted.
