So Joel, what's your move now?

Sweet. Thanks for saving me the time and effort of actually watching all those games. Now I'll have more time for yardwork! BTW, who's gonna win the national championship next year? And what are the major news stories of 2010? Any juicy celebrity deaths?

Okay..I'll save you some time.

1) Oregon
2) Rep. will do very well in mid-terms, but not unfortunately take over the House or Senate; immigration reform will be the hot legislative topic
3) Someone will kill Perez Hilton

OK -- here's mine:

1) Texas
2) Republicans will make very small, disappointing gains but nothing substantial
3) Roger Ebert and Muhammed Ali

1. Ohio State
2. Near Republican sweep
3. Tom Cruise has a stroke giving a scientology sermon.

Roger Ebert???? Wow. Thats pretty random.

HA........Thought that was actually a pretty good candidate for the dead pool, actually!!
And if there is one guy who knows all about the dead pool, it's Dirty Harry.

Prediction: Maturi extends Brewster for a year, retires during late summer effective EOY 2010, U hires new athletic director effective prior to start of football, GG Football goes at best 5-7, new AD already has someone in "back pocket" which is hired at the end of the 2010 GG Football season.

Well then, Wacker did the honorable thing and resigned when it became clear that he couldn't lead the team to more than 3 Big Ten wins in a season. Brewster should do the same thing since there is no reason to believe he can ever do any better.

Lastly, I look at how teams finish the season. The Gophers got worse, end of story. Again, that's on the coaches. Wacker, Mason, Brewster... It's the same old story for nearly 20 years. They are all poor quality coaches, by Big Ten standards at least. I could go back even further but I think my point is already made.

Okay, I'm not going to get into a Mason / Brewster thing here. I have no desire to defend either of them tonight. But I hope you realize that when you drag Wacker into the mix you begin making a case for our University's lack of will as it regards athletics in general and football in particular. Wacker was a proven coach. Heck, he had been voted National Coach of the Year prior to arriving here from TCU. He won everywhere he went - except here. Now, you can either think he forgot what football was all about when he came here or that something else happened that affected his ability to put a competitive team on the field. I'm going with the latter option and letting you figure out what it might have been. Here's a hint, though, Chief: Follow the money and the weird administration.

You can't fire a guy after 3 seasons, this is college football. Plus we're Minnesota, not Michigan or Notre Dame. It's been a disappointing season but lets see what his recruits can do as sophmores and juniors.

Agreed...plus no good coach will come here knowin ghe could be fired after going t bowl games in years 2 and 3 and be fired.

GM

This guy is Wacker II without the offense. I'm so tired off these guys who preach all this positive crap without any results to back it up. Time to cut our losses and move on. And we aren't talking about much in losses here are we? Isn't Brew the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten?

I couldn't of stated it better myself!!

I think Maturi gives him one more year. That's all you can do at this point, unless you have someone ready to go right now that's better.

With that said, I don't think he DESERVES to be back and he certainly did not show that he can coach at this level and we have given him three years. Next year will get pretty ugly for Gopher football fans but maybe next time we hire a coach, we will get someone who can:

a) coach at the collegiate level who knows which systems he wants to use
b) have solid assistants who run his system and are good coaches themselves
c) realize we need a good offense AND defense
oh and while we are at it, we can add:

d) still realize that recruiting is your lifeblood and you need to work hard at it
e) continue to build bridges with high school coaches, alumni, fans etc.
f) someone who will want to stick around here and build the program
g) someone who won't lock the players in closets when injured or yell and say mean things to them that hurt their feelings..........(had to throw this one in there for the Texas Tech and Kansas fans)

Is this guy out there?? I think so. I think we have to get a guy who the Minnesota public will rally around and respect, like Tubby Smith did for the basketball team. That is tough to do on a limited budget, but that guy is out there somewhere. Next year, we will be looking for him.......

There are dozens of coordinators and several position coaches in the college ranks who would most likely be head and shoulders better than Brewster. Heck, there are probably three guys on Bielema's staff better than Brewster, including one who Maturi will most likely want to speak to.

That fact that some of you still defend this guy who is in so far over his head is mind boggling. As a Big Ten fan, I would like to see better product coming from your program.

Fire Brewster and you throw away the 2010 recruiting class. Since we already threw away the 2006 (Mason as lame-duck coach) and 2007 (Mason fired) classes that would be 3 classes in a 5 year span that we gave away. That is a sure way to kill a program.

I would bet the best recruit, Jimmy Gjere, would go nowhere ... and who else that will gain admittance is actually rock-solid? The 2010 class would not be thrown away, and in fact, the right hire could strengthen it in the final 3-4 weeks.
I like playing devil's advocate, even though I have said for a while that he deserves 2010, but I just don't see the cliched "light at the end of the tunnel."

We played pretty good ball in the second half and really didn't play too horribly towards the end of the second. I see a promising year next year. What exactly were all you expecting from this game? Iowa state on paper was a much better team than we were. They beat Nebraska. enough said. Nebraska would have taken a sh.it all over us

Do you live on this planet? WE ARE RTALKING ABOUT IOWA FREAKING STATE!

I think this sums up the problem with our fanbase. If Iowa State lost this game, their fans would be saying that they lost to the Minnesota Golden Freaking Gophers. Who the heck are we or what has our team accomplished in the past 40 years to make losing to a Big 12 team in a bowl such an embarrassment?

I hope that with time, we can legitimately be insulted by a loss like this, but Iowa State and Minnesota have very similar programs right now, like it or not.

I'll admit that this is the first time I watched signifcant amounts of Iowa State this year. But let's get real, they're not very good. Yes, they beat Nebraska. But they needed somthing like 6 turnovers to do it, and still barely won. If they played Nebraska 10 times, they'd win 2. And let's not make Nebraska out to be some top 10 team. Outside of Nebraska they didn't beat anyone significant. ISU is an extremely medicore team from the 2nd division of the Big 12. We could/should have beaten them. Insulted/Embarrassed may be too strong. Horribly disappointed? Yes.

Let's also not pretend the way we lost doesn't matter. I think everyone here would be a bit more optimistic if we'd lost this game 35-34 instead of 14-13 even if giving up 35 points to ISU would be disturbing in a different way. The horrible, pathetic offense was the single gravest concern of the last month of the season. More then anything, with 6 weeks to prepare, I wanted to see a coherent, competent offense start to emerge. Instead we got more of the same ineptitude and required a fake punt to set up our only offensive touchdown in the last 3 games. I also wanted to see a more composed sideline. While there may have been marginal improvement, we still burned 2 of our 3 second half timeouts just trying to get plays in, and as a result, never got the ball back after Gray's fumble.

Honestly, the only real positive I can even come up with is that we had almost no penalties. Kudos for small victories I guess.

Very well laid out throughout.
I might even say ISU vs. Neb. in 10 meetings, the Cyclones win just once. Neb. turned it over 4 times inside ISU's 5 yard line. Sure, the Cyclones probably had something to do with that, but that is the rarest of rarities.

There are at least 100 coaches out there whom we could hire and who could make us into a winner. Just don't ask me to name any of them.

huh, gophers lose and suddenly doogie finds the submit reply button. where have you been the last three weeks (besides one thread asking us to do your work for you).

but at least you got to ban BronkoNagurskiGopher again for no reason.

I didn't ban Bronko ... I enjoy our give-and-take ... as I have stated numerous times, I love the back-and-forth on this board until individuals start taking personal shots. We can all have differing opinions, and I enjoy reading how everyone lays out their thoughts.

This game belonged on the NFL Network

There's no other way to put it. These were 2 medicore (at best) football teams. If there was a bowl game that belonged off of the major networks (ESPN, ABC, CBS, Fox) so not everyone had easy access to it, this was the one.

Tim Brewster has made a New Year's Resolution...He has determined that it has become a "top priority" to recruit members of the GH board of posters, simply because most are local or closeby, and can fill all weaknesses of the team from us. Not only that, a lot of us will not need to redshirt because of our expertise, brains, and abilities to solve all.

Go Gophers!

Stick a fork in this, Brew is done and so is Maturi. The sooner we get this over with the better.

GopherFish -- Your take is very defensible, but lay out why.

Doogie, I'm curious to know your opinion.

If you were the President of the U what, if any, changes would you make?

I would consult with many and figure out what the better formula is. Do they need to upgrade the facilities even more? Do they need to increase the spending in other areas (assistant coaches, recruiting, etc.)? Maybe I am overly optimistic, but I think you can win here. I refuse to fall back on the take of "Well, we haven't won here in 40-plus years, so why would you think we can win now."
The right person can win here, especially with the beautiful new stadium. I would devote many resources to matching what Ohio St., Mich., and Penn St. have ... why not shoot for the stars? Why do the Gophers, when/if everything is going well, have to be the 4th-best program in the Big Ten?

As for Brewster, I am on record saying he should get 2010. Fine, but 9 games against bowl-eligible teams from this year most likely means 4-6 wins next year. The contract extension will mean nothing because the buyout, if it changes at all, will only do so minimally. In other words, if they want to buy him out after the 2010 season, it won't be tough.
If that happens, I would take a long look at Mike Leach (10-straight bowl games at T. Tech is not easy to accomplish and he clearly knows offense ... defense could be an issue though, so devote a lot of $$ to bringing in a competent def. coord.), who will coach again undoubtedly, and probably after next season.

I will add this: Leach might be a headcase, but at this point I would be willing to give the keys to the program to someone who would win. Leach has a Minneapolis-based agent, which wouldn't hurt in selling him on this area.

Agreed. We already know the outcome of next year - five or six wins at best. Another losing season will only make it tougher on the next guy. The longer we keep Brewster the further we are from where we want to go!

Are you drunk? what exactly did you expect 3 years into a new coach and 2 years into a new coach recruiting? We are where we should be about now and we are getting closer to a rose bowl by the day. What did brewster do to lose the game yestarday? Players play and they did not make enough plays, but better players are coming and are getting more experience and they will make plays because they are playmakers not Division II rejects.
