You don't extend Brewster deciding to "wait" until after the bowl game. Now we get embarassed, what do you do? Do you extend Brewster now? How do you sell that to the general public? Or are you going to fire a coach in Janauary and leave no time for recruiting?

The A.D.'s timing sucks and there's no good move to be made now.

I am fine with an "on paper" extension, but it's going to be VERY tough to present that to the casual fan. If it's not presented like a real extension publicly, recruiting will still be hurt.

We lost the game. I'm not sure we got "embarrassed." But I take your point. I think it is too late in the game to can Brewster now unless there is someone waiting in the wings. I think Brewster has 8-12 games left to prove himself. There are few seats in the nation as hot as his in 2010 - and when you consider the 2010 schedule - it won't be easy. I suspect that we'll be doing coaching interviews in 11 months.

Huh??

What game did you watch (entire game now)?

Embarrassed? Um no.

The 2nd half we were ok. The players didn't make enough plays...but there were some important things in the 2nd half (for the D the whole game) that makes me look forward to next year.

Do you really think we can win many games when scoring between 0 and 10 points? I don't. So it really doesn't matter how well the D does, unless they can pitch about 7 shutouts, the Gophers won't have a winning season next year.

...and the apologists are here. Yes, it was embarassing. Any offense that only plays a half a game and scores a single touchdown against a team they are favored against should be embarrassed.

Kudos to the D, but I'm getting sick of giving Kudos to the D.

We lost to Iowa freaking State despite winning the turover battle 4-2. We scored one TD and put up 13 points against Iowa State and that's not an embarassment? I coudn't disagree with you more.

He has no move. Firing Mason after the Bowl was inexcusable, doing the same with Brewster would be a joke. If he had any notion to fire him (he should have had a notion) it needed to be done after Iowa. Now he's stuck with Brew for 2010. And unless Brew can somehow pull 7-9 regular season wins out, he'll be gone. It seems pretty unlikely given the schedule and current offensive incomeptence. Maturi should probably exit stage-left with him.

I'm sure they'll proceed with the extension. But it better be a meaningless paper extension. If it contains any increase in buyout, it's unacceptable at this point.

This guy is Wacker II without the offense. I'm so tired off these guys who preach all this positive crap without any results to back it up. Time to cut our losses and move on. And we aren't talking about much in losses here are we? Isn't Brew the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten?

Agreed. My biggest concern is that the Gophs are slow out of the gate and Brewster immediately becomes a lame duck. No wins, no recruiting, no hope.

Next year could be VERY ugly.

Except Wacker never won 6 games in a season.

I'm not an apoloigist. It was a bad loss.
But... ISU's signature win was against Nebraska (who will be in the top 15 of the final rankings). Our signature win was against who? Northwestern? AFA?
I can buy that the program is an embarrassment or that this season was an embarrassment or that 0 offensive points for 11 or 12 consecutive quarters was an embarrassment.

This game was not an embarrassment in the grand scheme of things.

Many of the same people who accused me for years of being a Masonite are now referring to me as an apologist or a Brew guy??? No. I'm a Gophers fan.

Why wait 11 months.

The only figures that matter are W & L. Star this and star that it does not matter look at the results.

Overall record 14-24
Big Ten 6-18
Bowls 0-2

Not much more to say.
Oh he's a good recruiter.
Give him more time to develop his recruits.
So on and so forth.
Hey I want a good team as much as anyone, but you have to cut your losses somewhere.

I was embarrassed in the first quarter, and half way through the second quarter. But we did out play Iowa State in the second half imo. Tough loss, not quite embarrassing.

Salvage the recruiting class by keeping him, but fire him early next year if we have a losing record.

I'm starting to think that Joel will give him an extension, then retire in the next year so a new AD can have some time to survey the situation before firing Brew and doing a search. I like Brew and Maturi, but it seems like some political maneuvering will take place so Maturi can go out before a new hire is made.

I think Maturi gives him one more year. That's all you can do at this point, unless you have someone ready to go right now that's better.

With that said, I don't think he DESERVES to be back and he certainly did not show that he can coach at this level and we have given him three years. Next year will get pretty ugly for Gopher football fans but maybe next time we hire a coach, we will get someone who can:

a) coach at the collegiate level who knows which systems he wants to use
b) have solid assistants who run his system and are good coaches themselves
c) realize we need a good offense AND defense
oh and while we are at it, we can add:

d) still realize that recruiting is your lifeblood and you need to work hard at it
e) continue to build bridges with high school coaches, alumni, fans etc.
f) someone who will want to stick around here and build the program
g) someone who won't lock the players in closets when injured or yell and say mean things to them that hurt their feelings..........(had to throw this one in there for the Texas Tech and Kansas fans)

Is this guy out there?? I think so. I think we have to get a guy who the Minnesota public will rally around and respect, like Tubby Smith did for the basketball team. That is tough to do on a limited budget, but that guy is out there somewhere. Next year, we will be looking for him.......

That would be a selfish and cowardly move and nowhere near to the best interest of the program.

...and so I'm pretty sure you are right.

Never thought of this but it seems very plausable.

I don't think it's selfish and cowardly. Maturi will eventually retire, and it's in his best interest and the school's best interest to give the next AD the hiring ability. I also think it's far too early to not extend Brew.

The 1st 7 games of next year will be player=d by October 16; they are:

Middle Tennessee
South Dakota
Southern Cal
Northern Illinois
Northewestern
Wisconsin
Purdue

If we have a losing record at that point, I think Maturi needs to start engaging replacements. If he can do that covertly... fine. If not, he needs to pull the trigger.

My main point is that Maturi's timing/thinking patterns suck. If he wasn't going to fire Brewster after the regular season, then he needed to "extend" him prior to the bowl game. Maturi decided to gamble on what looked like a pretty solid bet (a bowl win) before handing out the fake extension. Now it blew up in his face and he's got to "extend" a coach that just lost to Iowa State and whose team could not solve any of its issues between Thanksgiving and New Years Eve.

Yeah, thinking about it I guess I'm with you on that if you assume Brew is extended anyway. It BETTER not be an extension that costs the U a bunch of money though...

You can't fire a guy after 3 seasons, this is college football. Plus we're Minnesota, not Michigan or Notre Dame. It's been a disappointing season but lets see what his recruits can do as sophmores and juniors.

Is 1 TD in the final 41 possessions of the year acceptable? We had to do a freakin fake punt to even get that 1 TD. Sure, one of the opponents was Iowa and their good D but the other 2 where South Dakota State and Iowa State.

Random O-coordinator > Fisch

Brewster is responsible for the whole Fisch and Dunbar situation.

Conclusion...it's on Brewster

Agreed. We already know the outcome of next year - five or six wins at best. Another losing season will only make it tougher on the next guy. The longer we keep Brewster the further we are from where we want to go!

Except Wacker never won 6 games in a season.

Well then, Wacker did the honorable thing and resigned when it became clear that he couldn't lead the team to more than 3 Big Ten wins in a season. Brewster should do the same thing since there is no reason to believe he can ever do any better.

Lastly, I look at how teams finish the season. The Gophers got worse, end of story. Again, that's on the coaches. Wacker, Mason, Brewster... It's the same old story for nearly 20 years. They are all poor quality coaches, by Big Ten standards at least. I could go back even further but I think my point is already made.

Sweet. Thanks for saving me the time and effort of actually watching all those games. Now I'll have more time for yardwork! BTW, who's gonna win the national championship next year? And what are the major news stories of 2010? Any juicy celebrity deaths?

Alabama, Repubs sweep midyear elections, and Keith Richards
