Baylor, after all, is a Baptist university in the heart of Texas, a school that in 2004 stripped an openly gay student of his scholarship and, as recently as 2011, offered a course suggesting homosexuality was a “gateway drug” and banned openly gay men and women from serving on its faculty.

And yet, when its star basketball player and one of the faces of its university happens to be gay, the school was remarkably silent.

Perhaps that’s a sign that Baylor’s stance has moderated, if only slightly. Or perhaps — and this scenario seems more likely — the school overlooked Griner’s sexuality because she was a talented basketball player who was among the athletes bringing positive attention to a university that has been the face of scandal in the sports world.

When Ken Starr talks about the fabric of the state being changed, about a hundred years of rivalries being lost, about the whole thing not being as interesting or as good as it once was, he’s absolutely right. But he’s off by 16 years, and when we think back to the really important day, his school saved itself and threw TCU, UH, Rice and SMU onto the side of the road. Does Ken Starr not know the history of what happened when the Southwest Conference broke up?

Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor joined the Big 8. SMU, TCU, UH and Rice were tossed aside. Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech were easy picks. As for the other, there was no easy choice. Baylor was chosen because it had more friends in high places.

It was an honor to be chosen as the venue for this event. Twelve brave men were remembered here. Twelve fallen heroes, first responders who gave their lives unselfishly to try and help their community, were honored Thursday in the Ferrell Center.

Those men were the true reason for the event, although it has become abundantly clear to us that some did not attend to honor them. They paid the ultimate price, and how did we repay them?

With disrespect.

We saw students get up to leave the memorial immediately after the president’s speech, making it abundantly clear the real reason they attended.

It was not to honor those men. It was not to support their families.

They attended so they could claim to have seen a president. Normally, this would be a source of pride. However, if you bragged to your friends in the wake of the event about seeing President Obama and forgot the real reason we gathered, you have absolutely nothing to be proud of.

I'm in favor of 16 teams, cut out one week of out of conference, ban FCS games. 16 would allow you to give an autobid even to the weaker conferences and still have some at larges. Then give home field advantage to the higher seeds until the final four. The beauty of this system would be that the number 1 and 2 seeds would open with a home game against a mid-major conference champ. Having a home game against a team like Troy State would be an effective bye for a team like Alabama, which would still make going undefeated a huge deal and wouldn't water down the regular season. Also, if a Troy State was able to start the playoffs by pulling off an upset in Tuscaloosa, you'd have a pretty cool Cinderella story in the makings.
 


In conclusion...

Baylor is absolute trash. They claim to espouse Christian values, but have no morals, no integrity, and no character.

Athletically, they have been an embarrassment - except for when they cheat to get ahead.

Academically, they are a joke. Their research expenditures are $15mm per year (the U's are $826mm and A&M's are $820mm).

Their students are the attention-seeking, socially awkward rejects from families with enough money to buy them a college education when they are turned down by the real schools.

Anything they say on BaylorFans is not relevant.

Aggie, you are making me reevaluate how I go about my hatred of Wisconsin. I think I need to bring it to another level.

I agree with this, there were some bad hires before Sumlin at A&M, but it still amazes me that both schools have been more than competitive since joining the SEC (yes Mizzou is in the east, but they lost to frickin Indiana!). Question for you though Aggie, does Sumlin miss Kingsbury or Manziel more? I just wish the Big Ten would win a key game or two this bowl season.

Been a closet Aggie fan for a long time, Curtis Dickey was one of my favorite college running backs ever!

Three things factor in - a loss of most of the studs on the o-line, a loss of an experienced OC, and a loss of Manziel. Had we simply lost Manziel, with good play calling and plenty of protection, Hill or Allen could have won us a few more games. With a loss of Kingsbury (as we saw in the Duke bowl game) Manziel could make plays out of nothing, especially when he had decent blocking. If we lost the o-line but kept Kingsbury and Manziel, their fast play-calling and execution would have kept defenses on their toes.

I can't say that either one was greater than the other - except to say that Kingsbury is completely replaceable, there are dozens of equally talented OCs we could have hired. Manziel is a once-in-a-generation type player who, although his partying upset some people, brought a lot of eyeballs our way and won games.

As it stands now, we have a good QB, but he is inexperienced. We have an OC who isn't much older than the freshman QB on the field. If we had a more immediate need, it would be finding another Kingsbury before we looked to find another Manziel.
