Smith vs. DeChellis

Maybe Tubby's issues include injuries, high expectations, and an athletic department that systematically is the dregs of the Big ten. Tubby has won every place else he has been. is anyone on this board even willing to consider the problem might be partially due to the environment he is trying to work in?

This whole program is a mess and Tubby's lack of success is a symptom of a much deeper rooted series of issues.

Facts

DeChellis is 215-229 (career) and 0-1 in NCAA tourney.

Tubby is 467-197 (career) and 29-15 in NCAA tourney.

There are better comparisons than those two.

Since Tubby Smith arrived at Minnesota, he has 32 Big Ten regular season conference wins (never over .500). During that same time period, Ed DeChellis has 28 Big Ten regular season conference wins (one season over .500). Smith has two NCAA appearances, both losses. (Left out of the discussion: Penn State's NIT title and Tubby's excellent record against a crappy non-conference slate.)

Best guess on salary (as far as I can tell, this would include base and other regular compensation):
Smith: 1.8 million
DeChellis: 650K

Rivals 2011 recruiting:
Smith: 2 at 3 stars
DeChellis: 2 at 3 stars and 1 at 2 stars

With the talk of a Tubby extension in the works, I am having a hard time being convinced that spending nearly 2 million for very average results is worth it. Of course, Tubby's teams have been hampered by key injuries; these kinds of injuries don't happen in other basketball programs.

Only the crackerjack analysts at Rivals have been too lazy to do so.

I think if people want to compare Tubby's performance since coming to Minnesota with another Big Ten coach, Beilein seems like the better fit.

They arrived in the league at the same time. Tubby has a slightly better league record. Assuming Michigan gets in, they will both have two NCAA tournament berths in four years. Beilein already has one NCAA tournament victory at Michigan vs. zero for Tubby at Minnesota.

I think you can make an argument for either Tubby or Beilein depending on what things you really value from a coach.

I think it is pretty simple, DeChillis probably couldn't have done much better at PSU while Tubby probably couldn't have done much worse here.

Well than, that changes everything. They both have had average at best big ten teams while Tubby has had more out of conference success.
