Having completed the search for top coaches for the U of Minn job, and ending up with nothing, all immediate excitement of a new big-name hire had turned from optimism among the fan base to anger. Now over the last few days, the anger has slowly dripped away leaving a bunch of fans checking forums, twitter, and other sources for insider information regarding the next no-name candidates. After about 48 hours of searching and coming up with almost no new news, fans are starting to get apathetic about the search.

At this point, only the most hardcore of hardcore fans are still checking twitter feeds to see what the latest rumor is. Many average fans have proceeded with their regular lives ignore the fact a vacancy even exists. With enough silence over the course of the week, many more fans will fall into this apathetic stage. A distant memory will be the dreams of an enviable coach and a chance to land one or more of the 2014 "Big Three".

Normally, apathy is a bad place to have your fans, but not when you're waiting to release the name of an underwhelming hire. From apathy a new thrill can be born reinvigorating the fan base simply by hiring a new coach. By the time it happens, most will have forgotten about the vacancy and simply filling the position will feel like a new and positive addition. The timing and silence leading up to this hire isn't by accident.

I don't believe it's gone according to Teague's plan, unless Marshall happens to be the guy, but if they are able to find more money it could end well.

My guess is that the money has temporarily dried up. Plan B may be to make a genius hire on the cheap.

Isn't that cheery for 8:30 in the morning.

Not disagreeing with your assessment, but I just don't think these guys are trying to put one over on the fans by delaying any announcement. Your implication is that a decision has been made that they know is bad and are waiting for a full news day to let us know, so it passes with little notice. That I am not buying.

I have had the hashtag #gophers on Twitter up on a tab since last Monday...It will remain up until a hire is announced. I remain optomistic that the plan is in place and the timing due to "other" issues is why it has not yet been announced. I know 2 things for sure: Basketball starts in about 7 months, the Gophers WILL play and they WILL have a new coach. I will be happy in November regardless.

This is a better place to be than the panic that led UCLA to Alford, or Texas Tech to Tubby, or dare I say Enfield to USC. The latter two are no where basketball schools. I have been to Lubbock and it truly is nowhere. At least two of the three will regret the hire.

I'm guessing that since things haven't gone according to plan, and they aren't in direct competition with any other big schools right now for a coach, there's absolutely no reason to rush things.

I think you are giving them to much credit. I find it hard to imagine Teague and Ellis coming to the conclusion that they should wait until nobody cares anymore to reveal the new "underwhelming" coach. I would go as far to say that this would signify an epic failure on their part and be a fireable offense.

This says more about the fanbase than anything else. One can read this and recognize that the fans wanted to puff out their chest and strut around with an air of superiority, claiming the great and powerful "Oz" of basketball to be their floor general. The waiting means that they are kept from their perceived right to be arrogant about the new coach and being king of the hill.

That was done when Maturi hired Tubby and look what it got us. A losing record in B1G play, a few entrances into the tourney with only one win to show for it. Hardly a great and powerful "Oz" hire with Tubby.

I'd much prefer a coach who clearly can teach fundamentals, adjust to situations, and exploit opponent's weaknesses. He doesn't have to be a big name...yet...but he has to be an excellent coach. I'm willing to give the new AD the opportunity to make that kind of a hire for the Gophers. I gave the Flubster 3 or 4 years before it was apparent he had nothing more to offer. I'll give the next coach the same time frame. It's hard to imagine that NT could hire anyone as bad as what Maturi did in hiring Brewster. In fact, I'm psyched to see our next basketball coach come in and thrive in an environment where the AD and University provide the needed resources to be successful.

In this case, silence is golden.

I personally think you have to find the most capable basketball coach you can find and worry about the Big Three as a secondary consideration. How long will Tyus and Rashad be in the NCAA anyways? If NT goes by this plan, I still trust he knows where the coaching talent is hiding.

At least, they will have a bigger student section. UofM's student section consists of 50-100 students???? I thought the same about West Lafayatte (I still do) but Purdue's fans are really helping the home games.

I am sorry StCroix I disagree with one thing you say more than others. College Basketball doesn't start in 7 months. College Basketball never ends and it never begins. Sure games will start in 7 months but the things that make teams and players great takes place every day of the year. The recruiting done now sets a team up for success down the road with more talent. The work and practice put in by current players improves them and the team going forward. Getting a well qualified coach a quickly as possible is very important. If we want to see the best possible Gopher team next year they need to get that guy hired as fast as possible so he has the time to get his staff lined up and to take care of the rest of recruiting and deal with any transfers.

I am not overly concerned about the time line and I doubt Teague and Ellis are holding anything back. The coach whomever it will be needs as much time as possible to get working on next years team. Recruiting for 2014 is at a fever pitch and high school juniors are deciding every day what school they will be attending and not having a coach for any exended length in time is a negative. It is one that can be overcome but this cant drag on forever.

Can't tell if this is just a bad joke that I missed?

I'm with you on this HuskerDude. I wish people would just chill and let the man do his job. It's not a race to hire the coach, and he needs to get the right guy. The lack of patience from the average Joe and Joe media type is a little frustrating.

I'm still waiting to hear from Gopher Lady on what happened with her source regarding Teague "having his man" at the time of Tubby's firing.

I have hope that the delay is for a Final Four assistant coming in that can build the program over years. Going to hard to do without the practice facility. A good but underwhelming hire won't get it built. I don't think Teague has the where-with-all to get it built without a home run hire.

I think he can get it done. However, I think he made it a lot harder on himself these past few weeks unless he hits it out of the park in the 9th inning. His list of big donors for the deal certainly has been reduced by the Flip deal. Big screw up, and that's confirmed- even Loblaw should be able to admit that with what Barriero said yesterday that he KNOWS.

I think he can sell a guy like Marshall or Wright and get this done. Anthony Grant, maybe, but it doesn't take much research to figure out that they may need to pick some Villa 7 offensive coaches for him.

Who says she wasn't right? How do you know that Teague wasn't thinking the exact same thing? It actually seems quite probable.

Can we please let them hire a coach before we jump off a cliff? My goodness... I am ridiculously sick of the pessimism of our fan base. Is it possible that our actual AD knows more than the "couch AD's" in this forum?

Don't jump off a cliff over other's pessimism. I am ridiculously sick of the pessimism about the pessimism of other fans. It is 100% certain that our AD knows more about what is happening than the couch ADs. We know that because he is sharing nothing. That said, there have been plenty of gross errors made by past ADs and we are seeing evidence of gaffes by this one. My guess is that you haven't been on this earth long enough to put this in perspective.

You obviously didn't attend a single game this year because the student section ranged from 1500-2500 students per game...smh...no your facts before you spew nonsense. Several websites have "The Barnyard" in the top 25 student sections in the nation. The student section is not the issue.

No I didn't. I said in my other post that it was a bad joke. Top 25 student section is not a true ranking in my opinion. If they are in top 25, I would love to see the schools that are ranked from 25 to 50.

Reminds me of the story about the old bull and young bull as they're gazing down on a few prime
Jerseys. The young bull says: "Let's run down and jump the first one we can"! The old bull says: "
No, let's WALK down and pick out the nicest one" Some of you guys are like a gerbil on a treadmill.

That is definitely not how that joke goes.

I think 'The Plan' was to release Tubby of his duties and then hire the best possible coach. Seems logical.

In the end, it doesn't matter. When the Gophers announce their new coach, the vast majority of the Twin Cities sports media will criticize the choice. It doesn't matter who they hire, or when the name is announced. Teague is in a no-win situation with the media, and I suspect he knows it.
