According to Sid from the Star Tribune:

Gophers linebacker Gary Tinsley, who got in trouble recently by allegedly fleeing police after driving a moped the wrong way down a one-way street, will not face felony charges, according to Maturi. However, Tinsley, who is expected to be a starter this fall, has not had a misdemeanor drunken-driving charge dropped.

Good news for the football team, but I hope the Athletic Department drops the hammer and makes a statement suspension-wise after this occurrence. It's about time for them to do something like that in my opinion.

So this is fricken rediculous. DUI, Fleeing Police on foot and mopped and the felonies are dropped and is still waiting on the DUI misdemeanor, but Royce White allegedly steals a laptop, which is was never proven guilty so they slap him with a trespassing charge! And recieved a year long suspension and is no longer with the team currently. What a joke! seriously! And people look at Royce like he a terrible person. Look at this! 10X worst! if hes not booted from the team i will laugh pretty hard. even tho he would help our team alot. be consistant with every player. If ur gonna suspend a kid for trespassing then tinsley should be expelled

And i am aware of the mall incident with Royce, but this still is wayyyyy worse then what White has done in his short time at the U

Royce's whole ordeal kept going on because he wouldn't roll over on his friends and say who else was there. His lack of cooperation pissed off the UMPD and as stupid as it sounds they wanted him to pay for it in some way. I have no idea if GT said who the second moped was or not, but the DA probably thought the DUI was a fair plea to give GT.

I'd like to throw a comment on the UMPD out there.
I honestly have some doubts as to whether they are allocating resources properly, example.
Spring Jam they have a ton of police presence, I swear i even saw a helicopter on the news. Really?! For a bunch of drunk kids? I realize things got out of hand last year, but good lord.
Put this together with a severely botched Royce White investigation, he didn't give up names? SO WHAT? The MOA incident is worse, and not related to my feelings in this post.
Then there's the very disturbing continued trend towards violent assaults near campus, if there were any "party patrols" out the night that the kid was shot near moos tower, and I was the kid that was shot I'd be raging mad. Maybe I'm way off here, but it seems like too many officers patrolling the drunk kids, feeling high and mighty, and not enough officers actually protecting campus.
Tinsley should still be in big trouble, but I really have been upset by some of the recent UMPD happenings.

Told ya the felony charges would get plead down. A 2 game suspension for Hacksaw sounds about right.

So I take it you don't think it is effective policing for the UMPD to be out amongst the students and patrolling them when they are drunk and being where large concentrations are. You do realize that most violent crimes involve one or both parties being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. What do you propose that the UMPD just set an officer on the corner of every block on campus 24/7. If you are so upset with the UMPD, why don't you call them and share your concerns.

1. Glad Tinsley didn't get the felony. Hope he gets things straightened out but most of us know to many people who didn't.

2. Can't get away from Royce White talk anywhere I guess.

3. It might be a jurisdiction issue. Story in the paper talks abut on campus crime being down and near campus crime being up. Maybe University police jurisdiction doesn't extend much beyond campus.

Fair enough, you may be right. I guess I just hope the emphasis of the UMPD is to protect campus from serious crimes and not to be "trolling" for underage consumption and parking tickets.
GG I agree that large groups of drunk kids can be a serious risk for crime, but a watchful eye and a smart policy of mutual respect can go a long way. Bust the criminals and the serious troublemakers, not the 20 year kid drinking in his front yard. If that's the way it is now then good, if not then I'd like to see a change.
Back to Tinsley, I'm glad the felony was dropped, I hope he's suspended for a substantial amount of time, and here's to hoping he realizes that he needs to walk the straight and narrow from now on.

I think that's the most even, reasonable response. 2 games serves notice, but doesn't completely tear the kid down. He doesn't seem like a bad seed to me, but of course, I'm coming from the outside, so I don't really know.

If Royce would have helped the cops I am sure there would have been no charges brought. I don't feel sorry for Royce nor do I see it as a "SO WHAT". The cops were trying to figure out who stole the laptop and Royce had information that could have helped but Royce wouldn't help. What about the kid whose laptop was stolen? Is that a "SO WHAT" too? If you won't help the cops solve a crime ( and thereby help the victim ) then don't expect any love from the cops or the DA. I'm on the side of the cops and the victim. The right thing for Royce to do was to come clean and cooperate with the cops - he had several days to figure out what the right thing to do was and he couldn't or wouldn't do the right thing.

I'm not saying either are guilty. But just for discussion, you think thieves are better than college kinds being drunk and stupid? Personally, I think thieves are worse.

GG, you are a one trick pony. i am "shocked" that you didn't respond to the Matt Garrin thread http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/showthread.php?t=17436 the second i read that thread I knew it would be GG free as you would never post in a thread like that. The second I saw the title of this thread i knew you'd throw your paws in here one reason or another. you are a one trick troll pony.

let me guess, you will say that you didn't read the Garrin thread. yea right.

He isnt a theieve. He got charge for trespassing since he didnt reallly do anything. And I think getting 2 felony charges for fleeing police and a misdemeaner for DUI is worst. Even if the felony charges were drop. Trespassing < DUI... Royce = off team. GT = Two game suspension?

DWI, Running From Police - Shoplifting

Ahh, let me think about this, never mind.

Did you miss the part where Royce stole hundreds of dollars of clothing from the Mall of America, roughed up the toy cop trying to detain him, and then fully admitted wrongdoing in both instances? Yeah, I guess you missed that part. He is most certainly a "theieve".

I'm not familiar with what Royce did or didn't do, but from what I read, it sounds like he was somewhere with someone who stole something and then didn't want to be a "snitch." Well, in that case I do think that's worse than getting a DUI. Sounds like he was lucky to not get charged with obstruction, as Tinsley was as lucky that the felony evading was dropped. Needless to say, it's time to grow up for both of these guys. But covering up for a thief is just as bad as being one IMO. There's a basic level of trust that thieves and friends of thieves violate that would be detrimental to any team's chemistry. It's not really the same with someone who does something stupid while drunk.

Wow.

Yeah, Tinsley being drunk and stupid is "10x worse" than what Royce did.

So the DUI isnt dumb? I realize it was a moped. (i think thats what i read), but still. this time it was a moped. next time i could be a car. And it could hurt someone. And he wont learn unless he penalized severly. I think u guys are missing the big picture. DUI's and Fleeing POLICE! are worst then theft. yes both are spinless and shouldnt be done. Royce didnt steal over $400 so it was petty theft. maybe if it was grand theft we'd be talking. usually punished by a fine, and can be put in jail for a max of six months. the charge of fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, you can face a maximum penalty of three years in prison and $5,000 in fines. And i dont know what DUI charges are, but im sure not great.

Yes, the DUI was dumb. I already said it's time for both Tinsley and Royce to grow up.

But what does it matter if it's less or more than $400 that someone steals? Is that where your moral compass starts to turn? Seriously? A thief is a thief, and I've already stated why thieves are detrimental to team sports. No one can trust them. Being stupid, drunk, and making poor decisions to run from cops on mopeds is one thing. Being a thief (on any level) is another. Thanks for clarifying that you approve of thieves moreso than idiotic drunks. That's what I figured your position would be.

Haters be hatin! It blows my mind that a group of basketball fans here are so openly hoping Tinsley gets shafted because Royce did. Will two wrongs make a right? Get over it girls.

Being stupid, drunk, and making poor decisions to run from cops on mopeds is one thing (Agree, this is a young kid being dumb, not thinking about what he's doing, happens all the time, I did it. Being a thief (on any level) is another. stealing and getting physical with a security guard take it up in notch IMHO, plus everyone hates a thief

alright. i see ur point. I just hope his suspension is severe. Both shouldnt be taken lightly. a thief is a thief and cant be trusted.

just sayin man. dont do the crime if u cant do the time. or another saying i was told. Be good or be good at it! and he wasnt good at it lol

Royce had a long track record of d-baggery coming into the U (Expelled for cheating at DLS, enrolled at Hopkins w/out even bothering to consult the coaching staff there, cowardly threw the ball at DJ from behind and thenstormed off the court and quit at Pulley, etc). Then he was caught stealing which in itself is not that big of a deal, but the unprovoked assault on the security guard is. I overlook most college gaffes but unprovoked assault bothers me. Then, he was kicked out of the dorms. Then he was kicked out again. Then he was there again illegaly, involved in a robbery and refused to ccoperate with the police with their case. Then he wants tp play the victim (when doesn't he actually???) because the same cops he refused to help dragged their feet in his case? Boo-hoo, time for him to man up and get his act together w/out playinmg the victim card or having his idiot friends flood GH to post in his defense (which also happened).

oh i dont know him personally. so im not one of his friends by any means. i guess i didnt know his whole story.. i mean i knew most of it. but i didnt know that he was kicked out of the dorms more then once.

According to a police officer: Fleeing the police on foot is not a felony. Fleeing the police in a vehicle is.

GT could have only been charged with one felony not the two as reported. The media needs to check the facts.

I think if you flee from the po-pos on a moped you should get a pass. I mean, that's just kind of embarrassing.

What's that joke about mopeds, fat chicks, and cops? :D
