Nice comments by Lionel Hollins. :)

Agree! I spent so much time watching the freshman I often overlooked how much Austin improved this year. The move to 2 should really help him next season.

Tubby doesn't develop players.

NBA coaches also don't know anything about coaching, and thus have no basis for complimenting the coaching of others.

This could be the dumbest thing I have ever read on the internet. But I guess all of your years of developing players, and real coaching makes you more qualified to speak on this...

Tubby coached at KY for years, a talent hotbed. The best NBA player he produced was.... who? Rondo? Tayshaun Prince? Besides Prince and Rondo the only decent NBA players he produced were Bogans and Jamaal McGluire and he didn't recruit a single lottery pick. Just saying

I believe it was sarcasm.

Hard to tell on the internet sometimes, but it was definitely sarcasm.

Tubby's certainly received some criticism here, some I understand, some I don't. Lack of player development is the one I just don't get. Players have developed just fine under Tubby at the U. As others have stated in many other threads, player retention (for whatever the reasons) has been our biggest problem, not player development.

Fallacy of composition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallacy_of_composition

Ralph Sampson stagnated or regressed the longer he stayed here, therefore every Gophers player under Tubby stagnated or regressed the longer he stayed here.

Austin Hollins could be a guy who takes a big step forward next year. He was quietly one of our more efficient players.

Not sure if he said that, but he did mention he wasn't real fond of the Big Ten's style of play.

Lionel said he couldn't stand to watch college basketball in general. It wasn't related to the Gophers. He just said that he likes the fast pace of the NBA more.

This is a great thing to hear. You certainly want players' parents to think highly of what the coach has done. It can't be any better than a parent who is also an NBA coach saying this. This is a great reference for the program under Tubby.

Agreed. When an NBA coach says a college coach does things the right way, that's an excellent endorsement for guys who want to go pro like, say, Tyus Jones.

Didn't Lionel Hollins say "I can't stand to watch this offense" just last year?

Yes, there's quite a Google ( able ) quote about it. Ironically, the game he was commenting on was between us, and you guessed it, Wisconsin. :)

Didn't that quote also include something about how he dislikes the 4th quarter during college bball too?

Yes, plus AD's at other Universities & opposing coaches don't know anything either. Who really does get it is the casual NCAA hoops fan/posting forum troll.

Actually he said "I can't stand to watch this offense because Tubby Smith designed it & I hate his guts. Tubby keeps prescription drug prices high & clubs baby seals in his spare time"

Here's the quote I was talking about:

Grizzlies’ head coach Lionel Hollins doesn’t watch his son Minnesota Gophers’ freshman Austin’s college game. “He was my son in high school and I didn’t watch him then, either,” Hollins said. “When I was out of basketball, I went to every game. I hated it. But I had to do it.” “In college, especially in the Big Ten … I watched Wisconsin and Minnesota play down the stretch and I couldn’t take it. They just hold the ball and hold the ball, and try to get a shot with 10 seconds on the clock.”

I don't know if that was more of a knock against us or Wisconsin. I prefer to think Wisconsin because they seem to slow everyone down and if memory serves correctly they're about dead last in the pace rankings.

From last year in the Star Tribune

Star Tribune said:
(Lionel) Hollins was asked if he was hoping to find a TV to catch some of his son's game.

"I'm not," he said. "I don't watch him play."

Because? "I don't like college basketball," he said.

I think in the PiPress article, Hollins is just saying kind words about Tubby Smith the man & style in general, not giving an in depth critique of his coaching.

You've got to consider what he actually said.. "I think too often coaches like that get criticized because everybody (else) is shooting threes and playing wild, undisciplined basketball." The reality is many, many kids want to get up and down the court and showcase their athletic ability and scoring prowess. They are turned off by Tubby's offense.

Austin, however, is a great fit for Minnesota... as I've said multiple times, after Rodney it was Austin & Julian who were the most valuable to the 2011-12 season for the Gophers. Austin had a few rough outings (and took hell publicly from Tubby for it), but he had a very good year. Rebounding is still a struggle, but even there he was better in the second half of the year. Very important piece of this team in 2012-13.

To the best of my knowledge every player and fan wants a run and gun offense. Unfortunately to do that successfully you have to control the boards.

It's sublte, but both Austin and the team will benefit with his move to SG next season.

As for Hollins' appraisal of his son's play for the Gophers after two seasons, he said, "He defends, he tries to play the game the right way. He's gotten stronger and more consistent with his shooting. And he's more comfortable being in college. I was proud he grew and had a good year."

Go Gophers!!

Yes, it certainly is rare to hear the parent of a player who is in a coach's program to praise that coach.
