Coyle, a former deputy a.d. at Kentucky, is expected to receive consideration for the Kentucky a.d. job if he gets an endorsement from men’s basketball coach John Calipari. Current a.d. Unlimited funding and a blue chip basketball program are the positives for Coyle.

The negatives? You are working for the basketball coach, and he will do whatever he wants to do. Perhaps including cheating.

Yeah that's true, what used to be cheating is now completely legit, if you have the right corporations behind you.
 


If BJ works out, Coyle looks like a genius and he's batting 100% for coaches hired.

Not just a forced hire.

Do you think that Kentucky would setup a mock court to try players using a student council when the local authorities found no evidence? They would leave it up to the coach to make the call on a bad apple.

Do you think that Kentucky would have self penalized for 5 years if they had a academic scandal? They would admit it, forfeit a single game, and hire attorneys to let the NCAA know anything more would be a long painful battle that would cost the NCAA more than it was worth eventually settling on something reasonable.

The problems with our athletic program has never been bad luck like so many here want to believe- it was always the university leadership itself.

If Coyle leaves you can bet he has had enough of the PC leadership patting themselves on their back while making the wrong decision.
 






Is Kentucky really a better job? Maybe by a slim margin. Obviously they have basketball going for them. But football is more than likely a wash. TCF is more than 30 years newer than Kroger. Just finished building the Athletes Village. Coyle has family in the state. Do we know if he's a big hockey fan? He has now made the hirings for football, basketball, and hockey plus who knows what else.
 

I would be worried about him leaving for Notre Dame. I know that he attended mass (almost) daily when I was a student on campus and could see someone who operates in that world wanting to work at the country's most visible Catholic university.

I hope Coyle stays a few more years at MN. He has done a good job and its nice to have a stable AD situation. That said, Kentucky is an objectively better job. Better teams; better conference; more dedicated/loyal fanbase; better local and statewide support. Not sure about facilities across the board but Rupp is basically an NBA arena with all the bells and whistles. Oh yeah, and better weather.

Last I looked his Final 4 banners at UK are still hanging. UK is an NBA proving ground with a rich history and a competent and motivating coach Thats 95% of the recruiting done for you.

There are some athletic directors that want to work for schools that still balance academics with sports. For the typical SEC school, attending classes is a necessary evil that they try to minimize for players.

I agree that ND would be much more of a threat, for your reasoning, and also that it still focuses on academics.

Just to be clear the issue is not that Kentucky never does anything wrong - they are probably one of the filthiest program in the country. It is that if there is another scandal they would not seek to penalize their fans in a show of woke penitence and contriteness.

Leadership back in PC Minnesota...
Lets enable it, then pay the coach $1.5m to retire in KY, then screw the fans over for the next 10 years (or so) by accepting all penalties unconditionally. and then preach the fairness of it all to sooth their own consciences and save their careers.

Consider the source and all but, Reusse says Coyle had been forced on him, will take the Kentucky job if offered and Fleck isn't happy either and will follow him out the door. Other than that all is well I guess.

I am missing something here: what did Coyle have forced on him? I like Fleck but he's been treated very well for one good year. We've treated all our coaches well finacially speaking and I'd argue we've treated them far too well by handing out raises and/or extensions for seasons that should be minimum expectations for maintaining employment. As I know you are aware, Reusse sometimes makes things up to get a rise out of people and his defenders think he's funny and/or smart when he does it which is just odd.

As for the report on Coyle, there was literally nothing to the Missouri specualtion that Shooter put out there. I read numerous articles out of Missouri and none of them even included Coyle in their speculation. The woman they hired from UNLV's resume pales in comparsion to Coyle's so I think there's quite a bit of evidence that was BS...which isn't a surprised from the "Shooter". Maybe the Kentucky story has legs as Coyle was said to have a good relationship with Cal and it was even suggested that he would lean on him when he made a basketball hire (obviously that didn't happen).

Sorry my bad. I meant that Reusse said Ben J. was forced on Coyle and he's not happy about it. And while Doogie said Coyle is still happy here, he agreed that Kentucky is the "one" job Coyle would leave for, which seems odd to me.

Some of you just have maroon colored glasses on.

I LOVE the gophers, but the UofM is one of the bottom power 5 jobs in the country no matter what sport or athletics position you are talking about(other than Hockey).

Kentucky has a top 3 basketball program. They can get away with ANYTHING as long as they win. Their football team plays in the best conference in the country. They don't have to worry about the Woke PC BS going on in this state's metro area.
 

Well, Fleck possibly leaving for USC could change Coil's mind.

Who knows if BJ will bomb out or be a star as the MBB coach. And who knows if Coil can pull another Fleck out of his hat.

ROFL. Kentucky is one of the worst power five football programs in the nation. Better athletic program overall? Yeah....I think so. But when you toss hockey into the fold....and consider football.....the Kentucky program isn't arms and legs above the Gophers.
